You also have to give props to Obi Asika and Storm Records.

Let's see, if I'm correct then all the answers are connected.

I think that the concert that you are referring to is Lekki Sunsplash, which took place at Lekki Beach at Christmastime. Lekki Sunsplash was promoted by Toyin Munis.

Toyin Munis created Clapperboard in the early 1990s and he had a lot of time slots on LTV 8 (there were no private free to air stations in Nigeria at the time). One of the programmes that Clapperboard showed was Clapperboard Raps. I think that's the show that you are talking about.

Clapperboard Raps was produced by Obi Asika and it was shown on Saturday or Sunday mornings. There was a segment called Jimmy's Jump Off in which unknown rappers could freestyle over beats that were laid by DJ Jimmy Jatt. 2Face Idibia had his first appearance on TV on Jimmy's Jump Off.

I was going to write all this on the first page (but I forgot) because Obi Asika is associated with a lot of the acts whose works I've posted here. Junior and Pretty released their albums on Storm Records in the early 1990s (it had a slightly different name then) and Naeto C, Sasha P and others released their works on Storm Records in the 2000s.

Yes, Lekki Sunsplash

Naptu2, u'v not done justice to this post. I was expecting to see a real evolution from where you started, to the present day hip hop...

Before Dr Alban, you forgot the likes of Zakky Adzay, Weird Mc, Mc Smoke, to others like Dr Fresh, Intrudah, Def o clan, Nutty Pin, lyrical undertaker, chop d bone, swat root, etc. These were the days when the American scene had Pac, Biggie, Naughty by nature, Lost Boyz, wutang, etc, & the Jamaican Ragga crew like Buju banton, mad cobra, mad lion, capleton, Terry fabulous, etc
That's what really inspired our artistes then..
U just forgot all those artistes that pioneered MMV - Mr Music & Video DJs contest, including the top DJs Waxy, Snoop tha Damaja, Fryo, Humility, Midas...& GML - MasterLee, plus the other oga radio rap presenters like Eddie & JAJ.. & Kennis Music

All these set of people evolved the hip hop scene

Mode 9 remains my favorite!

All the people you mentioned, from Zakky to Weird MC, all came long after Dr Alban. Dr Alban's first hit was in 1990, while Weird MC's first hit was Allen Avenue in 1997. All the people you mentioned belong to the second half of the thread which began on page 2. They cannot be on page 1

They were alright... But, as far as Trybesmen was concerned, Freestyle was the true lyrical god!!!

grin Even listening to his 'OK' solo alone is enough to see why Freestyle was easily the best and most loved. However, we all know El, by a long mile, was the more successful/influential.

Kaboom, I hear, hosts a rap show on radio these days.

Eldee was always going to outshine the others... He basically had the backing of family, connects, and had the intelligence to go mainstream... Kaboom, for me, is all quantity, less quality...

grin You nailed it, though I'd like to think the part of your assessment about KB is relative only to the trio; that the poor guy was the weeping boy in the group, doesn't mean he was wack. grin
Kaboom held his own while it all lasted. He's a legend worth his weight in gold as well.

It was a hit worldwide. It was even popular in Chile.

While I find this thread interesting I don't think you should have missed out the first rap album in Nigeria.
This record was quite regular on JAJ on RN2 but I don't think it was a commercial success. In fact this album came out before Ron the Cat Ekundayos album which you put at number one.

The album was by Segun Robert and it was released in either late1979 or early 1980.

All the same a nostalgic thread.

But Will ever consider it as my favorite

Nostalgia....

Kel, Kemistry, Shasha etc all faded off ....

Kel is a medical doctor and Kemistry returned to the US. Remember that she was also an OAP on Rhythm FM and then on Inspiration FM. She's now an OAP on a US station.

No. It was the Euro-electro sound./techno beat that made it acceptable globally. It was in vogue then in Europe. That sound is still stepping in clubs around Europe till date

I'm sorry Naptu, but Kel didn't even study a course remotely related to Medicine as a part-time student at LASU. She's very much still into music ,and last I heard of her in 2018 (when she was co-hosting a midday show on Lagostalks913 FM), she was on the verge of releasing an album.

Kel is on Twitter nowadays advertising her chicken wings. Her handle is @Kelonline

DR ALBAN HAD RAPPING IN HIS MUSIC BUT IT IS NOT HIP HOP! ALSO, HE WASNT BASED IN NIGERIA SO IT DOESNT COUNT.
NIGERIANS DIDNT ACCEPT RAP WHEN SUGARHILL GANG CAME OUT.
NIGERIANS STARTED TO PAY ATTENTION TO RAP WHEN RAP VIDEOS BECAME MORE RAMPANT,
MOVIES LIKE HOUSE PARTY AND JUICE WERE ALSO AN INFLUENCE,
TO THIS DAY NIGERIANS DONT ACCEPT RAP IN ITS ENTIRETY. THEY BARELY UNDERSTAND IT AND ONLY SEE THE
MATERIALISTIC AND SUPERFICIAL SIDE OF RAP.
