I had a pain and went to the hospital for treatment only for the doctor to ask me to lie down remove my pant and he started to insert his finger into my private part to finger me and he was yearning hmm hmm and it was nothing pertaining to that I have to stand and leave there and never go back to the doctor again. The second instance was when I had accident and broke my arm only for doctor to ask me to remove cloth and wants to be touching my breast pretending to be massaging my arm, some doctors are terrible
Honestly this your first story get as hey be o..for u to just get up n walked away without any form of vexation or reaction means you enjoyed it n na shame no make u go back again.

For example in a teaching hospital, I said I don't want people around me what will happen? Will they ask me to leave. Be frank?

Do they have that authority to send me out in a government-owned hospital for asking that only the doctor(s) conducting the exam should be present?

Obviously, I cannot allow many people to observe me unless those conducting the exam.

This is my personal expression, many are comfortable with that.

Imagine yourself as a patient and not as a medical doctor, will you be comfortable that 5 students are looking at you (and in some cases asked to touch you) while a doctor is conducting the exam?

Thanks
Let me start this way. There is a reason these hospitals are called 'teaching hospitals' and everywhere around the world they are licensed to teach students the art of Medicine. Now our lecturers and lecturers before them were taught the same way. Medicine is such that there is no other way to teach students clinicals without exposing them to real patients.

As for asking you to leave that usually is at the discretion of the Consultant in charge. Personally I have never witnessed a patient asked to leave for refusal. At the same time I have never seen a patient who asked for privacy in a public teaching hospital. To the best of my knowledge they already know and are prepared before coming to see the Dr. That is not to say that it doesn't happen. If it does and a consultant sends out the patient nobody will query him for wrongdoing as the laws establishing the hospital permits such teaching. So yes they have the authority to send out the patient but most of the time I see them explaining and appealing to the patient who ends up agreeing.

This is not to say that every patient is examined with students. If for example they have being shown what a cancerous breast looks like already, subsequent patients will not be subjected to student examination unless it is necessary again.

I have once being a patient in a teaching hospital and truth be told I wasnt comfortable but then I couldn't help it as I understood it was the norm.
Now answer this question: knowing that it isnt comfortable for any patient and patients are given the exclusive right to decline examination by students how would they or the Dr that is examining you as a patient learn the examination he is about to perform. Imagine you are about to go for a life saving surgery and previously all patients declined the use of them fr learning or examination. By the time the Drs retire or die how will the students know how to perform that surgery?

Lol. Which medical school did you pass through that did not tell you that sexual and reproductive history is a must for every female of reproductive age? And one of the reasons for that is so that you don't end up giving certain drugs to someone who might be pregnant?

Or you think doing physics and biology in the university is the same as "passing through medical school"?
you should have let him wallow in ignorance, it is not everyone you reply. He sounds like a drop out, the only thing we can do is empathize with him.

80%? So a married person will still deny?

maybe in Nigeria where ppl are pretentious.

But how is asking when last you had sex?
better than asking if the patient is sexually active?

That's an assumptious leading question right there, that's more offensive.

So what question do you still want to ask again after the patient has admitted to having the sex at whatever time they did?
nigerian patients are innate liars by nature, so you ask questions that they are more likely to give a truthful answer to.

Yes, they have plenty other patients to look at
i know a lot of consultants who gently refuse treatment of the patuent further when you refuse to allow students learn your case. Or tgey just send yu you to the reg.

Calm down, he's correct, some of those questions have no correlation with the situation on ground, even your reply is senseless. If you intend knowing if someone is pregnant as a medical practioner, why not ask directly or conduct a test on her, what's your business asking her when last did you have sex to know if she's pregnant or not.

Well, sir, your submission is not exactly correct. Let me explain further.

Let's say you are seeing a patient for the first time. You know, the first thing to do is to clerk the patient.

Then you arrive at gynaecologic history.

First Method as proposed by you...

Doc: Are you pregnant?/Do you think you are pregnant?

I assure you, sir, that some pregnant patients may still say no. Some may be using a contraceptive...which may have failed. Some may only know missing of their menstrual period as the only confirmation of pregnancy...but in truth, it isn't. A woman may bleed transvaginally and still be pregnant. So, there are many patients that may be pregnant without knowing.

Second Method as proposed by you...

Conducting a pregnancy test?

Firstly, medicine is systemic. You see, strictly speaking, a doctor does not make physical contact with the patient or perform any tests while clerking. You only "interview" a patient while clerking. After clerking, physical examination comes.. By now, the doctor may have had what is called clinical diagnoses (diagnosis and differentials). To rule out the differentials and arrive at a conclusion, a laboratory test may be needed. So, no, you don't just pick a strip and conduct a PT while clerking the patient.

Secondly, how possible is this? In a typical clinic setting, the doctor cannot begin to perform a PT every now and then. He's got lots and lots of patients to see.

Let me add that the question of sex isn't just because of pregnancy. There's also the issue of STDs. You know, condoms don't give 100% protection. So, it's very important to know if a patient is sexually active. We don't just stop there. We ask some other "crazy" questions like if he/she used a condom, like how many sexual partners they have. We may even ask if the patient engages in stuffs like anal sex or MouthAction. All these questions are valid, very, very valid.

May I add that, a patient may present with "mere malaria symptoms" and before you know it, the interview has gotten to the dirty waters (sex-related questions). Why I wrote that in quotes? Well, it's because those same malaria symptoms are shared by many other pathologies, including STDs.

I don't know if you understand our point of view, sir. We must ALWAYS ask about sex....especially in females of reproductive age...no matter the presenting complaint. If we fail to do this and we miss a diagnosis, these same people that are attacking us here would take us to the courts and have our licenses seized.

Good morning and do have a nice day.

Yes I was jeering cos he assumed no Dr had the right to ask a malaria patient about his or her sexual life and he was arrogant about it and abusing medical students.

Now it is known that some women could be 2 or 3 months pregnant without realising it. Asking her that will probably get you the wrong answer. Like a girl who is 6 weeks pregnant might not even realise she has missed her period. Sometimes a period can be missed and still doesn't mean pregnancy. So strictly, medically speaking you can ask but there is a possibility of getting a wrong answer. The most appropriate thing to ask is her LMP.

My own was when I went to a health center for my cervical screening in 2012.Meehn ! That procedure is very very invasive for a woman. When I got there , I met male and female Doctor .If she was a nurse I didn't know . I just observed that they both wore white coat .
The most embarrassing moment was when I was ask to UnCloth ( though with a medical coat to cover me up) I was then made to open my legs apart like a pregnant woman that is about to give birth.Afterward, an instrument was inserted in my cervix to open me up ..Then the lady called on the male doctor to take the swap and probably assess my cervix . God I burning with shame and prayed for the whole process to be over as soon as possible . I was very uncomfortable and felt exposed .
Though male the Doctor was professional but I didn't like the fact that he had to see me in that state. Naked and open.
Ladies that have done cervical screening will know what I am talking about .Its very very embarrassing
As embarrassing as it is, trust me, he wasn't turned on. All those vaginas we see stsrt to blur and look like say a hand after you see a few.

You must be kidding me if you are asking me how is when last you had sex the a better question when I've spent so much time typing just to explain to you that that is not the better question. The better question, is when was you LMP? Babe abeg I'm done. I'm really tired cos it's like you don't even understand what I've been saying.
LMP sef, how many women remember? approximately 60% of them don't.

Honestly we have really been patient in answering these people. Weldone sir. I have no issues with the ignorance but the way they ask with aggression after believing that no Dr has the right to ask about sexual history unless patient presents with related symptoms. Even a patient who complains of eye pain can still be asked cos during a general examination or specific system examination or even clerking other systems an incidental discovery could be made warranting such questions.

I once clerked a patient who told me she couldn't remember her LMP cos her period was not regular. That was how I wrote it and went to present to consultant. The way she insulted me for not digging deeper I will never forget. Now once I hear period is not regular or stuff like that I ask about contraceptive use, and even sexual history and lots more...cos the same patient will tell you A and go and tell Conso B.
