Let be realistic population is not an advantage in nigeria context what economic advantage is d millions of illiterate almajiri children to Nigeria?what can they add to d GDP?

Let’s look at it from another angle. Imagine, our refineries were working. Imagine, we have functioning production facilities..... like Leyland, Exile, TSG, the textile industries and all others and they are working at their full capacity. Imagine all these ABA made small scale producers are well funded and supported. Imagine, we have good rice milling plants all over Nigeria. Imagine our poultry and farming businesses have the full support of Government. Do you think they will have issues with their sales? Don’t you think the revenue generated from crude oil with be enough and also channeled into some infrastructural developments? What do you have to say about Bayelsa with less people and high allocations and yet nothing to show for it.
Even if this is country is 25 million and yet, the likes of Tinubu, Aregbesola, Amaechi, Orji Kaly, BUBU, GEJ, Saraki, Dino and co are the leaders, they will still ruin the country. Did you read the Dept of State report sometimes back that concluded that Nigeria could not account for over 600 billion dollars since 1979? Let’s ask ourselves what those funds would have done to this economy.
We have been deprived of good and selfless leaders since the creation of this country.

My dad bought his new beetle car few months after working as a teacher.....
Now u save n save for a tokunbo car....

Of course people were not earning a lot then....
But their take home could actually see them through until the end of the month....

Also, the stronger naira meant imported products were cheap.....
The main reason why manufacturing flourished prior to SAP.....because imported raw materials weren't expensive.....

But after SAP implementation....
The economy crumbled and standard of living took a dive, never to recover....
It wasn't helped by poor economic performance of successive govt, who had no clue on how to revamp a dying economy.....
If salary was adjusted for rising inflation.....there won't be much problem...
But that never happened n middle class collapsed....

For example in 1993, a pair of jeans was around 1000 naira, yet starting salary of a teacher was around 13 thousand per year.....
U can imagine....
When Abacha announced the minimum of 7000 naira in 1997....
People thought it was impossible and unimaginable....
That was our messed up the standard of living was those days....

The truth is our leaders nevr
I disagree with u that a pair of Jean is #1000 in 1993,do u know d highest denomination when abacha was in power?

like he said more people less resources now. If the present Nigeria had 1/4 of its current population it would have been ok. But we keep fucking and giving birth

The resources are there and in abundance too, I believe the problem is our lack of production. Nigeria was the renowned Giant of the black continent and it wasn't an honour bestowed but deservingly merited. We were exporters of mainly agro-products. No doubts the duppy ones have succeeded in making sure we know little to nothing of this glorious history of ours (big shame), hence why we are grappling at finding an economic foothold but without success.

The groundnut pyramids and towering stacks of cacao peas, cassava, palm oil, cashew nuts, yams and many other farm produces wasn't entirely consumed by the "small populace" we had then..... They were sold in exchange for funds, don't believe the bullocks they've taught us.

So how many education and health did Nigeria pay money for since independence my analyst?

Since 1960 till date, your country failed to stabilize power sector because of corruption and you're splitting nonsense

Don't ask me.
Go and get an FOI request, if you know what that means.
But one thing is sure.
The government subsidizes fuel, education, health, electricity for you as well as every member
of your family who ever lived in Nigeria. Yet, the same entitled folk keeps asking what the government
is doing for them.

Go and check how much was taken to foreign countries by Nigeria politicians since independence. I haven't even talk about the one they've in Nigeria and other Africa countries

You need a global Knowledge to know you've a backward country. Nigeria is a failed state and any country that want to progress must not emulate this disaster called country

How much was taken?
I am sure you have no idea just like other emotional posters on this thread.

You have no idea of the value of money and how it works.
It is funny how some of you guys compare Nigeria with some other countries
that have been amassing wealth for 300 years or more.
Yet, the majority of the development you that tends to seduce you happens
after the second world war.
I will suggest that you find a good book on the history of global poverty to enlighten yourself.

Many of you look at results from other countries and marvel at the magic behind it.
It isn't magic, it is a product of money and planning.

No matter how you slice or dice it, you cannot buy a hummer for the price of a bicycle.
It will never add up.

Nugeria's International Passport stamped in October 1982 When 1164.84 US Dollars was 800 Naira.

IMHO, this was a symptom of the coming troubles for Nigeria: a nation that suddenly got wealthy off an oil windfall, and acquired a taste for expensive high quality foreign goods pretty quickly.

There is something you guys are missing. You don’t have to be a graduate to have a job and a decent source of livelihood. There are diverse skill sets that can be utilized in a good environment. If we have adequate production plants, do you know how many skilled and unskilled folks would be employed? It revolves around and multiply. Should we cough out money to buy things in cash if we have a functioning society? No. Most times, in these developed countries, they live from hand to mouth and can afford anything you can think of. They buy houses and pay over 30 years; they buy cars and pay over a duration ( e.g. 69 months).
Do you believe that we have foreigners that can do menial jobs abroad even with their MSc joyfully?
It’s a leadership problem.

The kind of society that you described here is the kind of society that I have lived most of my life, so I totally comprehend where you are coming from. I also make it a point to tell people that just getting out of a University doesn't guarantee you a job anywhere. In fact the in the US, your job experience is valued more than your educational background.
I slightly disagree with you though on the school of thought that leadership is the biggest issue in Nigeria. Nigerians enjoy blaming their leaders as if they were imported from another planet to come and rule over them. Your leadership is a microcosm of your society. Your leadership doesn't just consist of the President, it consist of your councilors, LG chairmen, Governors, Legislatures, Ministers and others. What you find in leadership positions in the country is what is prevalent in the Nigerian society. You cannot have one type pf people in your society but expect your elected leadership to be vastly different from the people. They are one and the same.
For the leadership to change, then mindset and thinking of the average Nigerian has to change.

Oga, if you divide our population by a quarter (ie 50m population and not 200m it is now) our gdp will be close to 18 to 20k usd.
Dont you know what that means?
Our gdp will be at par with some countries in Europe. Ideally if our population were 25m, you are talking of close to $40k gdp, then you can call Nigeria a mid-level rich country.
That is why those days in the 70ies and 80ties, we had British, Indian, American etc teachers in primary and secondary schools. Salaries were comparable to those abroad. As Nigeria got worse due to mismanagement and population growth, Ghanaians took over and later left as gdp fell further due to too much nacking and population explosion expecially in the North where they are not productive.
Remove Southern Nigeria from the north and watch Nigeria become rich overnight.

You mean GDP per capita?

Things were OK then. A brand new peugeot 504 was around N10,000. I am not too such, it might be less then. The middle class Nigerian were enjoying life. The military really destroyed this country backed by a certain region mentality to rule by all means.

How much was the minimum wage then? A fresh graduate was earning around N200 then. This means that he had to work for 50 months to buy that car without spending on anything else. with the present minimum wage of 30k, 50 months (about 4 years and 2 months) gives 1.5m. This una analysis sef

You mistake the value of country currency to greatness. Kuwait dinner is 3 times $$ and that does not make Kuwait great either. Nigeria can decide to make Naira higher than $$ but the consequences will be out of this world.

Are you going to talk about problems wey government don cause or take side wit dem....our government fail us 100%
michlins:
Truth is that exchange rate isn't a determinant of how good an economy is. For instance, Ghana cedis exchanges higher than the Chinese currency and Korean won and that doesn't mean Ghana has a better economy. Another example is the Kuwait Dina which exchanges for almost $1000/dinar. During the said time, very few people can afford to buy a car even when it sold for #4000. But we have folks buying used cars today for tens of millions.

Having said the above, it's undeniable that Nigeria didn't have potential back in the day. It's just that we had lots of petrodollars and less population and the government then was able to do her job without borrowing like today. Forget all the glorious tales our parents told us about how quick you can get jobs. That's because there were fewer graduates then. We need total overhaul of this country

I agree with you but in recalling the past, know also that it wasn't easy then. How much was the minimum wage back then? A brand new Peugeot 504 salon was like N7500. 505 Peugeot when it was first released to the market was N21000 but it could only be afforded by companies and millionaires then. So don't think if the hands of time were to go back, we will find it easy.... Naaaah

ajl:

I don't agree with your comment that the past should be ignored. No successful nation ignored its past. Without appreciation of the events of the past, people are bound to make the same mistakes as before. It's this way of reasoning that make Nigeria govt removed history from school curriculum. These days we have people who do not know their left from their right. Please implants stories of the past in the hearts of your children but let them know that they are not to dwell in the past but to use knowledge of the past to shape their future.

Very few people could afford to buy a brand new Peugeot car then, if your dad bought his after a few months of working, it must have been through a car loan workers were availed to then. Things were not all that cheap because many people struggled but I agree with you the coins were in use then. Newspapers were 15kobo, a bottle of coke was less than 30kobo I could go on and on but it wasn't easy for people then.

SIRTee15:

It's not about salary or minimum wage....
Its the purchasing power that matters....
In tho 70s, things were cheap and the little salary can actually go a long way....
U could buy basic food stuffs with coins and few naira....

My Dad bought his first car in 1979, just few months after he started working as a teacher......
And he paid cash for it.....
I doubt a new oil and gas worker can pull such stunt now....

Inflation and naira depreciation over the years, has led to constant rise in cost of living without a commensurate rise in wages....
That's what our parents complained about....

The truth is working n middle class had it better then than now....
