Hi everyone, I'm a fresh graduate looking to delve into the safety line. I just completed my HSE 1,2 &3 courses at Novelle.. I'm looking out for a job in this field and also what other courses should I take to support this?

Thanks

What was the training like?
How was it in general

The training was okay.. the facilitator was good at his work, explains thoroughly. The exams was conducted properly too , most people thought it would be a walk over but it wasn't ie if you don't study you won't pass

The answer to this question will be based on why you think you need further first aid and fire training.

Is this a requirement by a regulatory agency or an organization you wish to work for? or is this a personal desire/drive?

One thing you must bear in mind is the fact that First Aid and Fire Training (certifications) are generally emergency response based and have various levels of expertise and depth. Yes Sir. First Aid Course comes in various levels. So does Fire Fighting. E.g in First Aid there is the Basic course which teaches you CPR and using a first aid box to treat minor cuts, sprains, etc. There is the level which teaches you how to use an AED and more sophisticated equipment for external non intrusive purposes and how to stabilize victims of more life threatening situations. There is also the Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC) which is for police, military and security services where you are also taught triaging, and handling injuries from explosion and ballistics . There is the Paramedic Training which is highly advanced where you are taught more intrusive techniques for stabilization of a victim. This also applies to Fire Fighting. I shall save you the stress of mentioning the various levels to keep it short.

Ultimately, the question is WHAT IS THE NEED FOR THIS TRAINING? If the need for these courses is based on organizational or regulatory requirement, you must have to find out the depth of knowledge, skill and expertise the organization wants from you. If it is just personal desire, then the best is to start from basic/appreciation level, then move up to advanced levels if you so desire.

Note that HSE 1, 2 and 3 will not give you stand alone certificates in these areas. Hence if the need is to have/posses stand alone/separate certificates in these areas, then you have to go for these courses at a basic level at least. As most HSE Levels 1, 2. 3 training providers do not mention competencies in these areas on the certificates issued.

Good luck.

The Holy Bible says that the love of money is the root of all evil!

Money can divide a tightly close family members, friends, etc. Hence, am not surprised that ISPON is suffering what it's going through now but it is a shame really.

While they are there shamelessly bickering and maligning one another when you call each faction on phone, all it takes is another body to come up with a standard curriculum and top notch examination and certification process. Once the body can also get recognized globally by being visible, align with a lot of organizations and contribute to the development of the HSE STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Management), it will easily replace this NISP/ISPON in terms of relevance. The only thing that will give ISPON relevance is the gazette that sets them up.

It is really a shame. A big shame. Greed and personal interests is the root of all these wahala. When the reason behind this greed is investigated, it all has to do with control of resources and funds (money). Such a big shame.

Good evening senior professionals in the house, I want to pursue a career in HSE. My question is after my training with ISPON/Novelle center for HSE 1-3, is it the certificate issued that I will use for job application and tender for interview? I will appreciate any tips from people in the house who started like these and how to go about job applications.
Thank you

Professionals in the house, please say something. The house is cold for too long. Kindly try to post things related to HSE, experience at work, or even tips and advice for people just starting in the field. I look forward to seeing other people's post.

Didn't mean to sound harsh but.... Research is vital if you want to grow!

Below is a little of my own experience just about 3 pages back and this is still nothing as detailed as that of OmaniPadmeHum on this same thread. He hardly post nowadays but his write-ups are gold and very useful. You can deduce a lot of things from reading it up. It helped me a lot that's why I suggested it.

1. To learn more about the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria, visit the official website at www.ispon.gov.ng
2. For ISPON training, especially in Rivers State, visit www.maranaglobal.com. Distance Learning, Virtual Classes and Regular Classes all available at Marana Global.
3. To become a member or update your ISPON membership status, use the electronic membership portal at www.ispon.emms.ng
4. Contact ISPON President for clarifications: 07033358455
5. Contact Marana Global for training and membership support: 08110141960

Just a few observations: It is true that NEBOSH is globally recognized but it is not correct to say that NEBOSH is superior to ISPON as professional body. ISPON is a government body and a REGULATOR just like OSHA while NEBOSH is simply a professional body. NEBOSH has gained much popularity because of the origin- UK and the oil and gas influence.
ISPON is just about six years old under the ISPON Act 2014 and we are already recognized by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals. It is obvious that Africa and Nigeria always believe that anything foreign is superior, but here in Nigeria the story is changing because you cannot legally practice in safety unless you are certified by www.ispon.gov.ng, whether you have NEBOSH or not. You cannot also become a registered safety professional simply because you have NEBOSH.
So, it is wise to even get ISPON first before going for other international courses if you want to work in Nigeria. ISPON is cheaper and recognized and you will still do it even if you acquire thousands of others elsewhere.

The prestige will be so much...... But like he said, it's 6yrs old.

I have made up my mind to go for NEBOSH immediately after NYSC or during NYSC, but the issue is that its costly, around 300k.. NEBOSH certificate is internationally recognized. getting that certification is actually a must do for me. am an undergraduate civil engineering student, currently at 500l
