If you are alone in your car, you don't need to wear masks. Once you are flagged down and anyone is approaching your car, wear the mask before any conversation begins

Hello everyone,

I got flagged down this afternoon by VIO in the FCT. One of them asked me for my papers which I handed to him. After inspection, he asked if I had a valid driver's licence, I replied yes. I made attempt to pull it out from my wallet but noticed that the Officer had walked away from my car. He met his other colleagues who were seated and then signalled me to join them.

Got down from my car and realised that I was before a mobile court. My offence, as read out to me, was that I was not wearing a facemask inside my car. I explained that I have one in the car which I wear whenever I step out of my vehicle. They refused to listen to me and went ahead to fine me the sum of five hundred and fifty naira only. I was given a paper which did not carry the details of how much I paid. I insisted that I needed a receipt for the fine which I paid. After much reluctance, one of the VIO rudely scribbed the amount they collected from me on the paper.

The mobile court judge was rude to me and others whose case he heard while my Ordeal lasted.

I guess that the time has come for everyone to wear his/her facemask at all times irrespective of where one is.

Has anyone had a similar ordeal?

You are guilty as charged. Should have worn your mask before speaking to him and when you came down from the car

Me and my friend were flagged down at flag staff house around MUSON Center by LASTMA officials that there was no social distance in the car, because we had three people at the back which were females and our friends. We didn't allow them deflate the tire, drove the car to their office at sura, dropped the three ladies at point we were flagged, then we were asked to either pay a fine or be referred to Court. Cheapest fine we could he handed was 20k, like what the hell!? When I ensured we all used nose mask, even brt that had no social distance, plus no nose mask didn't get flagged down. When ever police or army is in a car, corona laws are flouted, so it's me they would eat my money like that. So we remembered an army oga at same flag staff house who did well to send his boy down, but who he sent was too gentle and not a stubborn officer that can wreck havoc. We made frantic calls to oshodi LASTMA office to speak with their oga there, which was successful because we used many contacts we've always had, but they said they've referred the case,so nothing can be done anymore, and the army man that came who I think can show Force was even so diplomatic. What baffled me most, the offense stated in my slip was we disobeyed traffic officials, I was surprised, where did we do that? We just angrily drove the car off after payment and time wastage. The law in this country is one sided.

Which defense? If you stand on your grounds and know your rights, u will not pay a single dime, I have been driving in Lagos since the corona pandemic period, no body from any government agency had stopped me, it's only if I carry passengers in my car them I know I can be liable
Heard u here, u said u valued your time, that's always the case with NIGERIANS,let him open his law books and show you where it's written that if someone alone is driving in his or her car without a facemask is an offense under the law of Nigeria

Dude calm down! Regardless of what you think you know, if a judge finds you guilty, then guilty you are. You can only appeal which is time wasting and expensive.

the idiot must be son of security officer or military, they derive joy in persecution of innocent citizen, they are very many here.

you see them supporting any atrocities committed by any Nigeria security officer or army

You sound happy about what happened to me. Pray it doesn't happen to you or a close relative.

Anyways, what happened is termed a minor traffic violation. This will not prevent me from holding a political office in the future if I desire one.

I stand to be corrected though.....

You are expected to wear it in the car if there is another person with you but if not, then the so called VIO Officers went beyond the law.

it doesn't matter. Facemask is meant for public places or where people are congregating

Next time get a photocopy of your papers including the licence and give to them, then when they tell you why you're not wearing face mask, tell them you are not mandated to wear mask except u're in the public space.

They stopped me somewhere in Kugbo last week, and i Educated them and they apologized and I left.
The only people I dnt argue with is POLICE

Why should anyone wear a facemask when he's alone in his car?
Doesn't make sense to me. You should have challenged them

Sorry about what happened to you.

But I'm just wondering what is the business of VIO with FaceMask.

Were they authorized to check for drivers without FaceMasks??

Please when next it happens ask the officer for the papers that authorized them to carry out such exercise.

It happened to me when I drove to Delta state. I was on the phone. Traffic police pulled me by the side and told me i committed an offense.

I told the officers to show me the papers that authorized them to penalized such offense. Luckily for them, they had the paper on them. That was when we started negotiating my freedom.

One of the officers commended me for knowing my rights and spoke to me with respect even tho i was in the wrong.
