The confession of the leader of Berry Boys, a secret cult, who said that he joined the cult at the age of 12, may have exposed lack of parental care and decadence in the society in Nigeria.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the 22-year-old Maliki Bello said he joined the cult group at that tender and since then he had been causing havoc and violence.

Bello was arrested alongside 11 others by operatives of the Special Strike Force on Social Miscreants of the Lagos State Police Command.
This was confirmed by the Lagos State Police spokesperson, DSP Bala Elkana, who said the dreaded cult leader was arrested on 4th February, 2020, after operatives from Itire Police Station led by the Divisional Police Officer, SP Barkfur Kromkyes, monitored his activities.
He said Bello had been on the wanted list of the Lagos State Police Command and upon his arrest he revealed that he was initiated into cultism at the age of 12 when he was in Junior Secondary School (JSS1). He further revealed that they use Facebook and other social media platforms to recruit new members.

“Maliki is the supreme leader of the notorious Berry Boys Secret Cult with operational base at Itire. He is a native of Lalopun, Kwara State but resides at No. 23 Ayinla Street, Idiaraba area of Lagos State. Maliki has been on the wanted list of the Police for violent crimes and gang clashes.”
“The suspect confessed to be responsible for series of violent attacks, murders and armed robbery incidents recorded in Idiaraba, Lawanson, Dosunmu, Ashimowo Bakare, Omo-Bola Mushin and Itire. The suspect told detectives that he was initiated into the cult at age 12 when he was in Junior Secondary School (JSS1).”

“He later rose to the number one position, mostly addressed as the supreme leader of the Berry Boys Confraternity. The gang has an official Facebook page (Bbl Baloteli) with 1,928 friends. According to Maliki, they use the Facebook page and other social media accounts to recruit new members, plan attacks and give updates to members. Discreet investigation carried out by the Police also led to the arrest of 11 other members of the cult” Bala added.

“The onslaught on social miscreants launched by the Commissioner of Police is intelligence driven, targeting mostly the leaders of the gangs and cult groups and blocking the channels through which they recruit young people. The Special Strike Force on Social Miscreants has successfully brought under control the activities of various cults and gangs in the State through well coordinated and targeted operations. The Anti-cult Unit of the Lagos police recently made a breakthrough after they arrested three of the most dreaded members of the cult group at Somolu/Bariga.

The suspects are alleged associates of the most wanted suspected kingpin in the cult gang called Jepro who allegedly started his reign of terror in Somolu/Bariga areas of the state. Jepro is alleged to be into armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism, etc and his alleged exploits earned him not just the fearful nickname, Jepro, but also significant wealth to show for it.

He allegedly flaunts his wealth publicly as much as he boasts about his exploits in the criminal world.

Police sources said he boasts that nobody can subdue him and members of his alleged gang because of the calibre of their sponsors.

According to sources, their suspected sponsors are mostly top politicians who use and dump him as the need arises. It was learned that he has been in and out of prison severally and each time he was caught, he boasts openly that he will be released. And, it will later come to pass.

Sources said Jepro, who has been on the wanted list of the police for long, escaped several times after committing crime and efforts made to arrest him always ended in noughts.

It was said that there was a time detectives trailed him to the prison and were awaiting to arrest him after his release but they were shocked after he disappeared without trace.

Later, he re-surfaced after some suspected cultists struck in the area and his name was prominently mentioned as the leader of the violence that erupted during their operation.

However, it was the end of the road for three members of his alleged gang, recently, after detectives from the Anti-cult Unit of the state Police Command, headed by CSP Uduak, succeeded in demystifying them. Police sources said the three suspects were arrested ‘like chickens’ in one hideout.

It was learned that on that day, the police at the unit received information that Jepro was in the area. The apprehensive but heavily armed police unit, personally led by their Commander, Uduak, swung into action and proceeded to the area.

They invaded the hideout where a group of young men were said to be busy smoking weeds and drinking. It was gathered that the moment Jepro saw that the area was surrounded by policemen, he took to his heels, leaving some members of his gang who gave up and surrendered. The three suspects allegedly opened up about their exploits during interrogation by the police.

However, the snag now, according to police sources, is that the suspects, who initially opened up by saying that they will name top politicians in the state that sponsor their criminal activities, surprisingly sealed their lips and vowed never to talk about their exploits or expose their sponsors. Police sources said that all efforts made so far for them to open up have failed.

When Sunday Vanguard confronted the suspects, one of them, Ogunlaja Elijah, 28, denied his involvement in the crimes he had been associated with but agreed that he belonged to Aiye Cult group in Shomolu/Bariga.

He narrated how he was initiated: “I am from Ogun State and single. I live with my mother at Elanke Number 4, Ibadan Street, Oworonshoki. “I have three friends from Osun State. One day, we went for their father’s burial.

That was where the battle was staged. It was night before I knew they had initiated me into Aiye cult. They were four in number, so they put me in their midst. After that, I left them there and came back to Lagos. That was in 2015.

“They came to Oworoshoki where I live with my mother to stay with me. So, last year, 2018, was when the issue happened, when they killed one of my friends Tunde. They shot him and used machete on him.

The guys that shot him were Shehu, Aro and Yusuf from Eiye Confraternity. It was during November and December period and they were also killed. They were the three guys that initiated me and I normally operated with them.

The other cult group killed my cousin and it led to a fight and my guys killed them also. I got my gun from a security guy from Benue State; he sold his gun, a short locally made gun to me for N22, 000. After our encounter with the police, they collected everything from us.

I was remanded in Ikoyi prison in January and released in March, 2019. I heard they did peace talk in the community. My mum called me to say she was sick and was in hospital. I had to go there to give her money for drugs and that was when the police arrested me. I feel very sad and regret killing people.”

SUSPECT No 2

“My name is Yesiru Adesanya. I am 37 years old. I attended Shomolu Baptist Primary School. Femi Jepro initiated me into Eiye Confraternity. He asked me to come to Fadeyi as he wanted to see me, but I didn’t know about cultism because I did not go to school.

“When I got there, I saw people gathered. They pulled off my shirt and initiated me. I have not killed anyone in my life. I was inside with other cult members when I heard there was a fight, I just went outside, but I didn’t get involved in the fight.”

SUSPECT No 3 “My name is Kunle Sholeye. I am 38 years old. I attended primary and secondary schools. I am married with a child. I have never killed anybody in my life. I didn’t benefit anything from belonging to Eiye Confraternity, and I pity myself for joining. I joined because Femi Jepro called me that there was a party and when I got there, they initiated me. As I joined, they made me a member of Road Transport Workers Union at Jibowu”.

How did your journey to the world of cultism start?

It all started in Delta State University (DELSU) where I was admitted for a Pre-degree course in Geology. When I arrived there, one of my cousins was graduating from the school and she offered me her accommodation, which I paid for. Unknown to me, my compound was the den of cultists. There, you had all the leaders of cult organisations on campus. The leaders of , Buccaneers and others were there. It was called Allen Avenue. I didn’t know anything.

One day, something happened in the compound. Some buccaneers from Ekpoma came and one of them had a girlfriend in the compound. Unfortunately, the lady was dating a member in DELSU. He came and there was a fight. I ran from my compound towards Abraka Grammar School and saw a young man who had a girlfriend in the compound. I told him there was chaos. I didn’t know he was a member. He mobilised more and the fight escalated.

The leaders of Buccaneer and were from the same place-Agbor. They spoke in their dialect that they should settle and they got to know I was the one who ‘reported’ the guys who came from Ekpoma. Immediately, he made a decree that I should be killed. I got to know and ran home for about three weeks. My parents were disturbing me to return to school, not knowing death was waiting for me there.

Couldn’t you at least tell the authorities to bail you out?

The school authorities could not help. The fellowships could not help and parents could not. They said if I must stay on campus I must ‘belong’. Everybody I spoke to advised me to join them if I must stay on campus. They were, in fact, marketing their different cult groups to me. So, I made up my mind to belong to the strongest group, which was the . I did that to at least remain on campus. But the killings were too much. The heat was much and after a year, I moved to the University of Benin to study Geology.

Then, you left the group right?

Not at all. I changed school and thought I had escaped. For one year, nobody knew my antecedents. In UNIBEN, the leader of the Eiye Confraternity was so powerful and influential. He had political ties that he was using to emasculate the . So the group decided to infiltrate a political organisation called Rainbow Charity Christian Organisation (RACO) so that it can counter the influence of the Eiye group. About seven of us that were unknown were drafted to infiltrate the group.

But that same month, I gave my life to Christ. Immediately, God told me I was saved so that I can fight cultism. I told God nobody can fight against cultism. Many Christians who left were killed or maimed. But God assured me and said if I didn’t do it, he was going to kill me himself. We had a seven-month strike during the Abacha’s era and when we came back, I declared to everyone I was saved. I was there for one month and they didn’t look for me. Everyone, including me, was shocked. Then, I summoned courage and went to meet the chief priest, who was a childhood friend.

He said the reason why they had not struck me was because he was covering up for me. He thought I was feigning salvation so that I could graduate because I was in 300level. I said no I was serious. Then, he drew the battle line and said I should live with whatever came my way. He summoned a squad to hit me but when they came, they could not locate the same house they had visited several times before. They only shattered my room and left.

I was not perturbed because I was already with the Nigerian Fellowship of Evangelical Students (NIFES). Until that time, nobody, at least in UNIBEN, had left a cult group and stood for Christ. When people saw that nothing was coming close to me, many who had confessed Christ but could not declare it began to come out. My boldness encouraged them to come out from Eiye, Buccaneer, and other cult groups. We started a group called the Called-out ones. It was such a big move because in my days, cultism was tough and untouchable. They would kill in lecture rooms in broad daylight. It was so attractive that those who didn’t belong felt foolish.

What was the group doing?

God used us to do so much. Mama Idahosa was there for us. She supported and stood by us. We started going round campuses through her sponsorship. There was also the late Bishop Onosode of Spirit of Life Bible Church. We were on TV, telling youths to come out of cultism. That was how cultism lost its grip in this nation. We exposed their secrets because the strength of secret cults is in their secrets. It got so good that you could slap a cultist back if he dared slap you. We were so effective.

Sure, you are right. They formed a new squad team headed by the chief priest. I was staying at the doctors’ quarters in UNIBEN. When they got to my residence, they said it was too early and decided to carry out an operation. They planned to come back later. They went to a family and robbed them. There was a 7-month old pregnant woman. As they were going, the head of turned and shot the woman in her stomach. They then met to share the loots. But surprisingly, a disagreement broke out over the sharing formula. The head got angry and shot the chief priest. Others ran away and came back to take him to UBTH. When they got to the reception, the pregnant woman who was shot was also being bought in. With her last breath, she identified them as her killers. They ran away.

The chief priest was in police custody for three days in the hospital. He then sent for me to come for prayers. I got a word from God to go. I got there and saw the criminal ward that was always locked with chains opened. Even nurses that had no business there could not get in. I entered and got to him. The detectives attached to him followed me without talking. The guy then narrated everything that happened to me. I led him to Christ and he said even if he was going to die, I should pray for him. I said he would not die.His mother was wealthy and he was treated. He was sentenced and he came out. The head of the was also looking for me. I couldn’t see him until we ran into each other on campus. He just came and knelt down. He was the most dreaded cultist on campus. He said he wanted to give his life to Christ. I said I didn’t preach to him but he said he was tired. He joined us and the guy who was to be his successor also joined us. They could not do anything because God was on my side. We were moving from school to school, preaching the gospel with our meager resources.

So, you graduated without hassles?

You can be sure. I left and joined Living Waters International Church in Port-Harcourt founded by Rev. Francis Bekee. I was there for 12 years, pastoring. I left for Enugu and pastored the church there too for another five years. I then came to Lagos and God told me to resign and start praying against the imminent violence in the land. I did and in the last four years I have been preparing for this assignment. The Lord said the assignment will kick off in Abuja.

Which is what?

The mandate is to put an end to youth violence in the country. From cultism, we have graduated to militancy, insurgency and now terrorism. We have really got worse. That is why I believe the proposed capital punishment against terrorists will not work. It should not be the first option but the last. If there was capital punishment, people like us would not have been alive today. Many people have come out of cultism. The government should exhaust every avenue to reach out to fight terrorism and cultism. Abacha voted many funds to fight cultism on campuses. In 1997, when we organised a programme, the school authorities gave us N100, 000 to support us. Cultism came down in the last 15 years because people rose up and said no.

So, what will you be doing?

We would start a non-denominational youth fellowship in Abuja where we will raise prayer altars. From there, we will spread to other geo-political zones in the nation. We will be taking our awareness campaign to them. 80% of people involved in social vices such as terrorism and cultism want to come out. But they cannot because there are no alternatives. I believe if they come to us, God will save them. Anyone that genuinely repents will be saved. I want them to overcome the fear of death. No one can kill you if your time is not up. Come out of them and God will accept you.

God is asking me to tell those involved in terrorism, cultism and militancy including their sponsors in government circles to give up. If they do not repent, God’s hammer will descend on them in 2013. God will start exposing them because He has had enough. This is their season of repentance

I've always shied away from discussing this publicly, but not anymore. Today, I will lay bare, all that transpired from being a free soul to being shackled in the demonic dungeons of cultism. I have no ties with them now. I do not ever wish to do so in this lifetime or the next. It has been a while, but I will try to remember it all.

I had always fancied being a cultist; the reason being that I could for once appear physically intimidating. I had really young looks and didn't get the respect I felt I deserved from acquaintances. That was just asking too much because I was adored in class (University) as being one of the top brains, although the class of my degree never reflected that. Aside from that, my personality skills won me enough respect from colleagues and friends. But what I desired was fear factor. I was bullied and intimidated a number of times by Cultists and Older looking males alike during my earlier school year. I endured this for a while

Fast forward to that day, I hosted friends to a drinking spree on a Friday, and in the process, some cultists from the Supreme Vikings Confraternity came in. Either they came to us first or we went to them first, I don't really remember. I was drunk silly. What I really remember was me shaking them in the 'anchor' way and them noticing I wasn't a member, about to 'drill' me.

One of them was however impressed by my alcohol-inspired bravery and took me aside, convincing me to become one of them. I readily agreed. He asked me to bring some money for the initiation process which I quickly gave #5,000 and promised to pay another within a week. We boarded a bike, or bikes, not so sure, and left the venue for the initiation.

Along the way, we stopped on three occasions or thereabout, to buy razor, coloured candles, V12 (codename for Squadron) and all that. We even drunk more hot drinks. The Pilot was summoned to spearhead the initiation rites and soon, we ditched the bikes, and began to move on foot.

Soon enough, we were walking through a bush path; I had no idea exactly where till date, everywhere was dark and it was raining, and after a while, I was blindfolded with my shirt, leaving me with my singlet, jeans and footwear. My hand was placed on the shoulder of one of them and I was led further into the forest. We soon came to a clearing where I was stripped to my spandex shorts and my blindfold removed. The rains wouldn't allow the candles stay lit.

My valuables were collected as was the rule in the place called 'Iceland'. An incision was made on my thumb, the left, I think..can't really remember, and it was dipped into the V12 and some words were said and some were repeated by me. I guess this was where I sold my soul, the promise of secrecy and all. I was then asked to lie down, and was flogged with matchets anf wood, I guees. My body was already numbed by alcohol and cold, so I couldn't really feel it much then. I was then welcomed to the society, given a 'vikantical name' and was assigned to my godfather, who taught me all about the SVC in a period of months.

I'm glad I didn't kill. I knew I could; that feeling of power within the first few weeks was intense. My relationship with people changed, I grew more distant, unfriendly and irrational in my dealings. I became volatile, and essentially, my life went downhill. I lost the trust and respect of a number of people. I was lost.

I gained nothing. Today, I have no use for those habits, because none of them actually matters in reality. I run away from those filthy habits instead. The annoying thing was, I was smarter than all my comrades, I was better off in my family background, I was blessed but sought a curse.

I've renounced them years ago. But I know it really isn't complete until I shed all their morals that I still keep. My biggest error was that oath, the blood, the cut, the incantations. I wished I could undo it and have all my lost years back. But here I am stuck with regret and none of those things that really mattered then.

My advice to those to whom cultism appeals to today, be sure that it fits perfectly into the successful life you see yourself in tomorrow. Else, there is nothing greater than your freewill. If you must be bound to a religion, there are many that still maintain your sense of freedom and a life free of regrets. I'm a Christian. I intend to be a full-fledged Christian. This is me just clearing the debris. There are many others. Find any that suits you, but cultism? It only promises confusion, and perhaps, a VIP seat by the devil's side as you watch your life get ruined.
