Why I Wept - Buhari

SAMUEL ARUWAN, KADUNA, AND BAYO OLADEJI, ABUJA

I won't step down for him - Ribadu

Former Head of State and Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday explained why he broke down in tears when he was addressing a world press conference in Abuja on Wednesday.

In an interview he granted the BBC Hausa Service which LEADERSHIP monitored in Kaduna, Buhari said: "I have never cried in all the positions I occupied but I was moved and I wept because of the present pitiable condition of Nigeria, particularly that of the poor ones who are struggling to survive. Here is a country that is rich and blessed, and there is no sound leadership that will do justice to the country. We have been struggling for liberation; I ran in 2003, same in 2007 and now in 2011, and I said this is the last time that I will run, and the thought that some people because of abject poverty will sell their votes also made me emotional and I wept for our country.

"Our people are poor with no leadership; they are selling their votes which will automatically enslave them with their children and great-grand children, because they have been denied education, health, water and so on. My shedding tears had nothing to do with a political strategy. For what and for which aim? The choice is with the people; if they decide let them vote for or reject me".

On the failure of the alliance proposed with the Action Congress of Nigeria, Buhari said: "People know very little about what happened. They said they want the running mate slot, and I said it is even contrary to the Electoral Act; why not let's go in to the poll and if we make it we can settle on cabinet and other positions. They now left and said I made it difficult, since I want to be president will I scuttle any chance that will pave way for me?

Buhari had lamented what he said were Nigeria's woes on Wednesday: "In the life of any nation there comes a time when some people have to stand up and point out when things are moving off track, explain why they are going wrongly, demonstrate how they can be set aright, and work towards making a difference. For Nigeria, that time has come and it is now; and the people to stand up are you and me! Second, let me state categorically that I am not in this race to advance or protect any vested interest or group. We are seeking to replace a government that has done so much havoc to its people and their reputation; and we are determined, with your help, to uproot them completely. By the grace of God, Nigeria is going through its last few weeks of arbitrary non-accountable, corrupt governance—the type that has turned it into a republic of thieves. I have fought drift and purposelessness in this nation. I have fought corruption and indiscipline. I have fought indolence and the betrayal of trust. I have fought the Nigerian civil war and struggled for the unity of this country in many other ways."

Meanwhile, the presidential candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has told his teeming supporters that he has not stepped down for anybody even as he disclosed why the alliance talks collapsed.

Addressing a world press conference in Abuja yesterday, the former anti-graft czar asked Nigerians to ignore some SMS messages that some people would be sending around claiming that he has withdrawn from the presidential race holding tomorrow.

"First, let us be clear and set the records straight: I am still running as presidential candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, and my running mate is Fola Adeola. Please ignore any attempt to manipulate the outcome of this election by whatever means especially through viral text messaging disinformation campaign," he said.

Speaking further, he said, "In the next 48 hours (now 24 hours), the destiny of our country will change. We would be electing the next president of our beloved country, and with that act we would be announcing our preparedness to march into a new future. My message to all my fellow compatriots today is that we vote wisely, that we act smartly, in the effort to save our democracy and our country, and set the path to a new beginning of greatness, achievement, and prosperity."

Commenting on why the alliance talks collapsed, Ribadu put the fault at the doorstep of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) which, according to him, failed to honour its own side of the pact, which is to allow ACN to take the slot of the vice president if General Muhammadu Buhari is elected as the joint candidate.

His words: "We attempted to come out with a strong opposition to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and on our own side, on the part of my party, we made every necessary sacrifice including, of course, offer of stepping down of our own presidential candidate, because we saw Nigerians wanting a change and we believe it is the right thing to do, for all opposition to come together. The other party (CPC) did not fulfil its own part and it was not as big a sacrifice as our own but sadly, they did not just meet up with what we agreed.

"Originally, we agreed that we as the senior partner in this alliance attempt - because we have bigger electoral number, made more votes across the country, we have more in terms of number in the National Assembly elected but we still consider it necessary and we did it, including making offer of sacrifice of allowing the candidate of opposition CPC to lead and we only get the vice president eventually but they refused. They agreed and then they turned it down again. Sadly, that is the fundamental problem that really led to the collapse of the last alliance attempt."

The red-eyed sharia monger wept because Nigeria will never be his much admired Somalia, Yemen or Pakistan.
He should keep his decrepitude, cobwebbed, night creature thoughts to himself. The clown didn't even bother to campaign in the South, so I wonder who he thinks is interested in his honey coated shiit?

Mr Buhari sir, save it; nobody gives a phuck.

How do we know that Buhari has not betrayed his own words, That he will not ''Run Again'' how do we know that the baseless violence is not an act to prove his point, Please, Nigeria is Bigger than anybody's passion, thus we must respect the will of the people & contribute our own quota to nation building and unity. Stop sheding innocent blood ooooooooooooo

I'm not surprised to see the PDP sockpuppet trying to deflect blame away from his incompetent oga.

Don't worry Beaf, we believe you. The bombings are all Buhari's fault because he is a CIA agent and an al'Queda operative. And Jonathan is a righteous holy crusader saving us from becoming like somalia. If CPC had won, things would have been far, far worse. They might have bombed somewhere important like the PDP headquarters or something.

Let's make sure everybody knows so we can all vote PDP again in 2015.

Some people have just madeup their minds that Buhari is evil because he is a moslem and from the north. No matter what how much sense is in what he says, they will not change their mind and prefer the future of their yet unborn generations to be sold away rather than accept the truth

Buhari is never the man anytime any day. We His efforts and all his supported effort to make the nation ungovernable like they agreed has failed. He should keep quiet. We thought he had worse plans not knowing it is just boko haram.

If he had no skeleton in his pocket, why did he oppose the investigation of post election violence? In his words he said the federal government cannot probe election violence which means he had skeleton in his cupboard.

We in the south are not fools. We are watching carefully to see what this will turn out to. Nobody has the monopoly of violence. We are just watching.

We will know when anyone touches GEJ. If GEJ is week, Yar'Adua(Late) was weaker yet we allowed him to rule.

I believe Buhari is the only man that can fight corruption that is the problem of this country. Even personally i cry for this country. Because despite the large amount of natural resources that this country is endowed with, the country is still in abject poverty. Grdauate are finding it difficult to get job, there is no power supply and there is economic mismanagement of financial resources.

Now I know some people will never learn, Its only in Nigeria, we mix goverance and luck togther.

what makes a good government? reactive or proactive? the one that has the love of country in him? the one that makes religion, ethnic, tribe etc as opium of the people.

Eeeeyah! The apostles of Buhari have failed to realise that good leadership is not all about being incorrigible, neither being naive nor being belligerent which Buhari represent. Agreed, things are not so good now in Naija, due majorly to d subtility of Buhari and his cohorts in the north by the instrumentality of Gboko bastards but i bet it with you, with Buhari as president, it would have been worse. Forget about his crocodile tears! mscheeew! e wan emulate Jesus Christ. Cry ko, weep ni.

And who gives a rat's ar.se about his crocodile tears?

He can cry me a river if he likes but Buhari will never been given the chance to dehumanise us AGAIN under the pretext he's trying to sanitise the nation.

Never again!!!Let him contest a million times, we will keep rejecting him, a million times.

Goodluck is not the solution however Taliban Buhari is not even in the reckoning.

He should just go and chill somewhere in his compound thanking his lucky stars that he's not in jail for his past deeds.

This guys makes me sick! he's like a nightmare that refuses to go away! Always coming back like a bad penny.

Can you give examples? Its not enouf to just lay baseless accusations. Some of us are lucky to be matured enouf during his administration. You might want to enlighten us if we are forgetting something. But certainly have not 4gotten that gej is an olodo that could not even manage a state like Bayelsa with such huge allocation every month. I voted Buhari for just 2 things. I wasn't expecting him to fix electricity, road, education etc I just wanted someone that can put an end to Corruption and violent as if I knew what was lying ahead of the nation. These in my opinion are the two major problems Nigeria has. Curtail these two menaces and all other things will fall in place with time. Forget about Education, infrastructure, health, economy etc if you can't resolve these two monsters (The fund to be used for these necessary development will and is being embezzled).

I will continue to say it that some nairalanders are intellectual bankrupt. Those northerners that said they would make Nigeria ungovernable were northern leaders in PDP in which Buhari is not part of. Post election violence is not new to Nigeria, although what happened after April Election was highly unfortunate which is the product of do or die politics we operate. Dont trust PDP, they use one national story whether positive or negative to divert attention. In 2002, United States warned Nigeria to urgently address the problem of poverty and mass unemployment in Nigeria most especially the North. They said with the level of unemployment and poverty in Northern Nigeria, north is a fertile and virgin land for breeding terrorism. Instead of our clueless government to act, they said terrorism and suicide bombing cannot happen in Nigeria. But now it has happened and some "idiots" are blamming Buhari.
When the uprising in north africa started, some analysts warned and advised Nigeria to address the problem of mass unemployment in Nigeria, instead of our government to do the right thing, they are saying it cannot happen in Nigeria. God forbid it, if it eventually happen in Nigeria, I know some "idiots" that sentiment and ethnicity have beclouded their sense of reasoning would also blame Buhari for it.
