Good afternoon, FelixBoye I'd like to ask a question about payment using the app. There's a space where they ask for a date. Is it the date of birth or the date when the passport was issued? Thank you. felixboye1: |

Fabuloski: As far as I am concerned, every university in the U.S that offers graduate program has a number of GA/GRA/GTAs they employ and fund, mostly starting in fall. But not all departments within a school extend this form of assistantship to international students. Your school of choice, your program department, and sometimes the need for an assistant within that department, plus your research interest (suppose your program is research focus)--determine whether or not you'll be offered assistantship. So, to get a YES or NO answer to your question, you need to make a list of potential schools, look for "assistantship" on the department webpage, and contact program/department coordinator as stated on that webpage. This person will be able to tell if you may be offered funding or not, or if they have funding at all. They always open up and tell you the case as it is if you ask about assistantship! Note that admission comes before assistantship, and sometimes, you have to apply for assistantship separately. Meanwhile, you may be eligible for some form of scholarship that will lower your cost of attendance, since you said you don't have money. All the same, check the website of each school you have. Don't start any application until you contact the person mentioned above, and until you are sure the school offers what you're looking need. It's not easy, but with effort and right approach to the application process, funding is within your reach. 3 Likes |

I think you should fill another ds160 form if you are going to change to Abuja if you had already submitted your previous ds160. If you haven't submitted yet, just change the place to submit application to Abuja. Never mind if you chose Lagos when you started the application. AdoChel: 2 Likes |

I already submitted it. Would filling another ds160 render the former one null..? Does anyone know when the embassy in Lagos would make appointment dates available? Wondering whether I should wait... felixboye1: |

Good day all. Please pardon me if my question has been asked before. I'm new here. Is it possible to apply for F-1 visa at this time, whether in Lagos ror Abuja? I am supposed to resume this Fall and my school just mailed me to know if I'll be able to meet up. Thanks |

Congrats on your admission. There's really nothing much going on now in terms of Visa application. Ofcourse it is due to the pandemic and most US embassies are currently closed. One can't really be sure if there will be any changes and Visa appointments can be booked in time for fall enrollment. All US schools know this and are trying to be flexible with regards to their international students so you really have to work with your school and program. However, you can choose to proceed and pay your Visa fee, fill the visa form, e.t.c. I learnt the earliest appointment date in Abuja embassy is November. Again, have you requested and received your I-20 from your school? If not, it should be the first step and you can proceed from there Rbab: |

Rbab: Congratulations on your admission dear.Have you gotten your I-20 form from the school? If no ,you need to apply to the school for it so you can use it for your visa application.I doubt if there’s an available date at Lagos embassy but Abuja ‘s available date is November for visa interview. Please what’s the name of the school? |

AdoChel: You do not need to fill another DS160 to switch your appointment venue provided your DS160 is alright. I interacted with a Consular who told me that. Just choose Abuja on the schedule appointment page. As for me, I will wait for Lagos because there is plan to consider F1 visa applicants as priority whenever they commence. This information was contained in the e-mail I received from them when I made the inquiry. Best. 5 Likes |

judithidoghogm: I got this e-mail responses from Abuja Consular and Lagos Consular today Consular Abuja 2:45 PM (1 hour ago) to me Both the Embassy and Consulate are closed for routine services. Student visas fall within this category. We will make announcements on social media and our website when we reopen for visa interviews. Please also consult with your university’s website. Some schools have already made decisions about the Fall semester. Some are still evaluating their options. Regards. Consular Section Abuja Lagos EmergencyLagosNIV 2:08 PM (2 hours ago) to me Hello, At this time the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos is closed to all visa operations. Please know that the entire Department of State team is taking this issue seriously and are seeking ways to ensure that aspiring and returning students will receive priority attention once routine visa operations can resume. The U.S. Consulate will publicize any announcement on the resumption of student visa interviews once information is available. Respectfully, Lagos Visa Unit So, this is the case now 6 Likes |

Rbab: Easy o , and congratulations on your admission. Actually, embassy is closed, and no interview for students at the moment. However, you can start your DSFORM. I want to note to you that in case your school uses eShipGlobal to send i-20, it is not wise to pay for the shipping yet as you don't know if fall 2020 is feasible for international students due to the pandemic. So, tell the school to send an electronic copy of the i-20 as authorized by the U.S govt ( due to the pandemic). If fall doesn't work, I'm sure things would have normalized before December, so you can get a new i-20 for Spring 2021. There isn't much you can do right now. 2 Likes |

Felt like sharing my experience here since it might benefit intending MS students in the future. I just began my summer internship with an amazing solar energy company in CA, though due to Corona I'm working remotely from TX. My BS was in Industrial Eng, currently on my MS in Mech Eng, now I'm working as a project engineer intern in the development of an off-grid solar project. Some key points I'll like to share are: 1. Try to build a diverse skillset so you can have opportunities in other related disciplines as you can see from my profile. Engineers and IT folks have the edge here due to our training. Corona has shown that any job one can't perform remotely will always be impacted by economic downturns. So try to gain as much IT skills as you can during your MS and select your electives wisely. 2. Keep track of projects (coding, CAD, research, etc) you have done at school, work, or personally. You never can tell when they'd come in handy. In my zoom interview, I impressed my boss by presenting a 5slide PowerPoint which I had prepared about my undergrad solar project. I've also used this project in my scholarship applications to NSBE which I luckily won, and SHPE which I'm hoping to win. When attending career fairs, create one page pictorial illustrations of these projects and take them along with your resume. At my school's career fair this spring, when I showed the recruiter a picture of the project, she told me to expect a call from her because the company was working on something similar. 3. Don't miss any opportunity to meet recruiters and hiring managers at career fairs at your University or conventions by NSBE, SHPE & SWE. It gives you a foot in the door than when you simply apply online. Also brace yourself for rejections, it's nothing personal and I have received tons of regret mails. I only needed one Yes, but I had to earn it. 4. Socialize with Americans as much as you can especially by attending campus events. College students are very social and will warm up to you as far as you are focused, independent and likeable. My conversational skills and confidence have really improved from this. Also, you'd be surprised that you can learn a lot from undergrad students who look up to you as a TA/RA. Lastly, never ever give up! Focus on what you can control and leave the rest to God. Best wishes to y'all. 38 Likes 9 Shares |
