there is a nothing amateurish in this...

Small scale businesses may not be able to pay your fees. You are best suited for those that need custom designs.

Web hosting companies now have website builder as one of their service they upsell to domain registrants... Would u call them amateurs or they are smarter by marketing?

They don't want to do the hard work but want all the benefits, Nigerians too like short cut.

I laugh when I see people arguing over peanuts ehn. You see some devs charging N30k for a project, I'm like wtf?
Personally, I don't consider them as devs cos it's not easy to become one... It takes constant effort and hardwork. When I said hardwork, I mean dedicating like 50-70hrs of every week trying to learn.

Look, don't wait to know everything. You go learn tire. Get the basics and move on to the next one. When you are working on projects you'll learn the rest as they come.

Matter of fact, web dev needs you to learn everyday while on the job because technologies are changing and updating at a rapid pace.

Thank u so much... Maybe I will try spend 1 or two weeks on css... I av created some responsive website... I even created sumtin like nairaland, I did it myself... They are all static though

Thank u so much boss

What do you mean by Amateurs provide cheap alternative for clients? Does it make sense to pay many of these over priced web developers in Nigeria(many are learners) or go offshore and get work done at the lowest possible price ?

As a client which would you go for ? The guys on fiverr or the guy who will ask you to pay a ridiculous amount with very crappy work.

The problem is many of you get the talent and fail at the marketing.. But marketing brings the money.

No matter how good a product is, if it failed its marketing, it would hardly sell.

What if I told you that I know someone who does not code but has managed to build a multi million business out of just WordPress set up?

You guys should learn marketing... It is very important.

How many of you have a blog where you talk about what you do? Do you know how much that alone can bring when it is well optimized?

But you are here saying it is saturated... That sound to me like someone who has failed at positioning.

This is it!

I can't help but laugh....Anyone going into programming for the money will sooner or later find themselves bankrupt and frustrated. Web development/design should be a passion, you must love coding, you must love attention to detail and above all you must love your brain getting hot and your fingers almost numb from hours of back and forth.

Now since what Nigerians really care about is money, I'll mention the koko, in my early days I made average of 60,000 dollars from the firm and average of $1000 per month as a freelancer, ultimately I left the programming world because much more lucrative jobs out there and you tech guys are just puppets that would never come close to making over 200,000 dollars per year. Unless you find yourself working at a firm, your income can be as little as 30,000 Naira a month or as much as 1 million a month. If you are a true freelancer then you must be at least better or on the same levels as the Indians /Pakistanis. The higher your skillsets the more you can charge especially on platforms like Upwork or Fiverr.

If you do decide to work for a firm, make sure you have a plan B, because programmers are like flies they get squashed and blamed when anything goes wrong with the company's website or database from the technical side. High turnover rate and high unemployment rate, just make sure you're in it for the passion and not the money, to be top notch you must be ready for a war not a career!

Web dev is saturated and watered down. Unless you are really good at what you do, and you work for top clients, then you'd be competing with all these bootcamp interns and copy and paste Indians.

In the 2000s, web devs made a lot of bucks just designing a HTML CSS static page. Not anymore.

Anyway, to the question. I'd say it depends on the project. But a project as basic as three pages of static website should be pegged at 200k.
3 pages of static website for 200k say wetin happen? Where guys are collecting as low as 80-100k for a dynamic website of 6 pages or more with database. The truth is as a web developer, you have to be very versatile and fluent with different programming languages to earn a mega buck.

The business days of programmers are numbered. DIY is littered everywhere on the internet. programmers have been swearing for wordpress and the likes for a very long timecheesy

● People can now design their blog/web without even learning it. They can now secure a domain name, SEO and also do the web hosting themselves.

●DIY Android/iOS app design is a piece of cake to even the layman.

Okay. You wouldn't call website builders amateur but that contradicts your argument against my initial position that web dev is saturated. How are you going to get clients when they can use web builders? How much do you think you'd be paid?

Web dev as we see it has changed a lot. Basic page development has been taken over by automation. To be able to stay relevant you have to learn more stuff like e-commerce, business management systems etc

It depends on your position

In Nigeria

Junior devs earn anything between 80-250k larger startups like opay, paystack, terragon grp etc could even go as high as 300-350 depending on how talented you are

Mid level guys earn anything from 250-600, again depends on the company.

Seniors earn 600 and above. A dev once told me andela seniors earn about 800 upwards, alongside company perks, like lunch, transport and bonuses etc

Many senior and mid level devs move on to remote jobs though, especially the very talented ones. That’s where the money is since you earn in dollars or euros depending on the form that employed you. At that point you’d be talking over a million per month and yes they’re more common than you think

Below is a junior developer opening on stackoverflow so you get the drill. It doesn’t mean such jobs are easy to get, that’s why I said the very talented ones

Seniors are upwards of $70,000

modified

No Nigerian company will pay you $70k. At least none that I know of. I was referring to remote work.

The stackoverflow listing below is remote, it’s not a Nigerian firm, if you have the required qualifications, you can apply. Hopefully you get an interview

Andela Senior developers don't end up to 800k - at least in Nigeria.

Free courses from Harvard University

CS50's Introduction to Artificial Intelligence with Python
https://www.edx.org/course/cs50s-introduction-to-artificial-intelligence-with-python

Computer Science for Web Programming
https://www.edx.org/professional-certificate/harvardx-computer-science-for-web-programming

Many more Computer Science courses
https://www.edx.org/course/subject/computer-science

If you're a self paced learner, edx.org should be on your list of resources.

Regarding the topic on salary. I wont drop any figures. When you're done with the basics, do the following:

1. Continuously beef up your Github profile with interesting projects (not todo list or sample projects you pick up when learning). You can do simple and interesting projects. You can do the same project using different stacks to show your range.

2. Be active on StackOverflow by providing helpful answers.

3. Create a simple and realistic linkedin profile (don't enumerate what you can't do)

4. Never stop learning. Never stop developing yourself. Never stop looking for what is trending. This is the problem I have with the PHP and Wordpress (N15,000 website) people.

5. Don't look for a Nigerian job. With decent power supply, a good computer with one or two additional screens and a fair internet connection, you're open to the world for business. The Nigerian market cannot afford you (yet). You didn't come this far to build 5-paged websites.

Don't try to learn all the languages there are out there. Learn the fundamentals of programming. Learn data structures and algorithms and you will be able to pick up any language and go through it in a weekend.

For any new project, don't settle for the stack in your comfort zone. Its possible there are newer techs to get that project done better. Explore your options and choose the best stack. Always try to add one new thing to your stack range with every project. It could be something as little as writing functional CSS with Tachyons instead of the normal CSS or using NextJS instead of CreateReactApp for ReactJS... just play around, you have no limits.

P.S: The industry is not a quick money scheme. I recommend having something else to support yourself while you learn. Please do not use the salary as a motivation to learn. Try and build passion for it. If you can't build the passion, leave it, try another field. Passion is important because you will need it when you eventually start working as a programmer (a job that can get very boring at times).

Another interesting field that's related to programming is DevOps. You can consider that at some point.

I see myzelf as a software developer, as long as you have passion for learning and solving problems, you can undertake either web or Mobile. what matter most is understanding programming as a whole especially data structure and algorithm.
To make money you must be good at what you do and have a strong market ability.

You’re not learning programming yet. It’s not as easy as some people make it seem but once you’re determined and passionate about it, you will excel with constant practice of course. It can be tiring and frustrating too.
