That's difficult because the term world class is about consistency.

Messi and Ronaldo have really raised the level of what is world class. They have outstanding top level consistent performances for over a decade.

Then we look at Brazilian players once they have played for 10 years at most. They just become focused in relaxing and going back to Brazil and enjoy life and even getting fat.

In this regard Robinho,Ronaldinho, Kaka, Ronaldo, R. Carlos where world class.

My view is that you can be world class for a period and then if you get lazy no longer have the zeal. You loose your consistency.

Examples are Rooney, Ballack, Ozil. In this regard they were world class buy not anymore.

Then you have the Aguero, over 10 years of consistent and still top class.

At the moment Neymar is definitely world class but for how long. To me Balotelli should have been world class but just not disciplined enough.

Not too long ago Sanchez was close to world class then he gets £550k a week after tax and just looses it.

Finally, to be world class I would say you need to be in at least the top 5 in your particular position for at least 5 years both at club and national level.

Was Marcelo in the top 5 over 5 years hmmm yes and no, borderline. Was Ozil yes but not anymore.

Leave Rooney alone ,if this guy is not even the greatest English player self (among them )

Rooney has paid his dues and he won’t shine forever

One of the few English players lived up to his hype unlike others

I still dont Believe Amos Adamu is from the north, he might be an Edo man tho,

majority of Sani, Ibrahim, Aminu,
with a certain Sani Toro, with one of them wanting to make himself a live president

Kog45:
Pls what do you mean by "I don't trust north with such a position"

We had good NFF president in Amos Adamu and Abdulmumini Aminu though I rate John Obakpolor,Anthony Ikhazabor and Emeka Omeruah highly.

Kidjo Williams would have been the best but he was not ready cos he failed to learn the basic sport administration from his late Dad S.B Williams who was astute sport administrator.

Kodjo impeachment gave us Dominic Oneya,Ibrahim Galadima,Sani Lulu and,Maigari and their administrations did not really help Nigeria football until Amaju came in and thank God Amaju did not behaved like Kodjo cos they shared the same ideology but different administratively.

Adarabioyo will want to switch allegiance. But I'm afraid he is way down the pecking order and it would be hard for him to break into this current SE. He should be warned just like Lookman.

IMO he has had a steep learning curve he has had some very hard schooling in the Championship.

He has stopped being a boy, I watched him in one game bully Dominic Iorfa and score.

He is now outside of Tomori the best Nigerian origin central defender l expect to see him either playing for Man City, ( l will absolutely not be suprised) at the very least in the EPL.

So if he starts playing for City will that change our perception or any other EPL club.

Finally, who do you think is better than him currently or other prospects ❓

Michael Owen: 'Mesut Ozil not world class'

By Mark Langshaw, Reporter | 6y

Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has disputed claims that Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil is a world-class player.

The ex-England international said that the German is not capable of leading the Gunners to the Premier League title as he is too inconsistent.

"[Arsenal] don't have the class of player to go toe to toe with the main title contenders," Owen told Sportlobster.

"Despite people constantly telling me Mesut Ozil is world class, his inconsistency means that we only see occasional glimpses of real quality.

"His odd good performance is usually followed by half-a-dozen poor ones."

Ozil joined Arsenal from Real Madrid last

How would that sound if it's coming from a white man? When a white man says: I don't have any Black friends. He dares not, else he gets hanged and shamed publicly.

Merriam-Webster is planning on redefining Racism, it'd be interesting to see what they come up with.

I've been insulted here enough, I'm done with this topic.

If a white guy says he has no black friends particularly in a country with minority black people is no big deal.

I have white Caucasian colleagues, associates, Church members, neighbours, football partners, etc I may socialise with them on the odd occasion.

But they are not my friends, l know who a friend is. I may not see my friends in Nigeria often bit they are DEFINITELY MY FRIENDS.

You must understand friend get category.

All the white guys l went university with not one is still in contact with me. However, they few Nigerians i knew in primary school in my neighbourhood in the UK as a child to this day are still my friends.

To be honest l call them brothers and not friends.

Would you consider the likes of Ozil and Marcelo world class today?

Cc thesupernerd, joebie, andrew44, icon4s, komekn

Well, firstly I would say the phrase "world class" is relative and also subjective. And so such kind of argument will hardly come to a conclusive end.

What is the definition of "World Class"?
Simply put "being among the best in the world".

Do you consider this "world Class" rating as an instantaneous rating or rating over a given period of time?

If you want to judge them as world class or not based on how they are ending their career (which the phase they are currently in) would you also say players lile Zlatan Ibrahimovich and Wyne Rooney were or were not word class based on how they ended their career?

Ozil and Mercelo are getting to the twilight of their careers and it will be unfair to judge them based on their current form alone.

During their hay days they were world Class players. FORM IS TEMPORARY BUT CLASS IS PERMANENT.

I have seen comments like "he should be consistent all through......". All through till what time? Is there any player that remains consistently among the best all through his career? Even Messi and Ronaldo, a time will come when they will start struggling. Do you think it will be fair to Class them based on their later performances?

well yes the term "world class" can be relative but clear is clear. in fact I would go further to break it so down to two broad categories. the shalaye and non shalaye group.

with the shalaye players you will do analysis upon analysis, drop stats and write endless thesis why you feel player A is world class which at the end of the day you yourself might not be convinced. players in this category are oil, John Terry, cantona, hazard etc

for the non shalaye it is pretty obvious the said players are world class so you won't need to engage in needless argument. players like Messi, Brazilian Ronaldo, C. Ronaldo, Pele, maradona etc are in this group

Loool Owen is a clown. Anyone who doesn't think peak Ozil was World Class is being delusional.
Dude topped the assist charts in Germany, Spain and England.
Broke the record for most chances created in the epl.
Wenger ruined Ozil. I understand trying to make more involved in deep areas of the pitch but playing that guy with Giroud...smh

Is Eto’o right to criticise Chukwueze?

The Cameroon icon recently claimed the Villarreal man could score more often but should the wideman be given room to breathe given his youth?

In a sense, Samuel Eto’o’s recent assessment of Samuel Chukwueze was understandable. After an encouraging breakout season last year, the Nigeria attacker has tailed off somewhat this year.

The wideman netted five goals in 2018/19 while registering two assists in 19 La Liga starts (26 in total) which wasn’t a bad return for a 19-year-old in his first season as a first-team player.

The fact he posted those figures despite the threat of relegation (Villarreal finished 14th, seven points from 18th, after an arduous campaign) and managerial merry-go-round (Javier Calleja was sacked in December, replaced by Luis Garcia shortly after, only to be reappointed in late January) was equally commendable.

Chukwueze could have scored more too, evidenced by his eight big chances missed statistic, the third-highest in the side behind Karl Toko Ekambi (10) and Gerard Moreno (16), two players who played significantly more than the young forward.

This year, however, has seen a drop in the 2015 U-17 World Cup winner’s end product. Before the Spanish top flight’s suspension, the Umuahia-born player had netted three times and assisted a solitary goal. Given there was hope he’d continue the upward trajectory of his maiden year this season, his decline has been a tad disappointing, but certainly not unexpected.

The development of any talent is usually accompanied by growing pains, and the forward’s apparent slump shouldn’t come as a surprise to observers, Eto’o inclusive.

Still, Chukwueze himself is self-aware enough to know he’s got a lot of improving to do in front of goal. He stated that much in an interview in February, where he agreed he could play better.

“Goals come with luck. I have had a couple of chances this season and I make attempts to convert them but you know you just have to keep trying,” the talented winger told AOI. “I’m actually not bothered because it is still a learning process for me and I know very soon what I have been practicing will start manifesting.”

A comparison of the West African’s time at Villarreal presents interesting observations: in his maiden campaign, the wonderkid shot at goal far more than he is currently doing (1.6 shots per game last year, down to 0.8 this season).

While this slightly explains his paltry return so far in front of goal, it’s also brought forth the wideman’s creative side. He’s already created six big chances in 19/20 from the same number of appearances (although 300 minutes fewer), which is four more than he managed last season.

According to Understat, his 'Expected Assists for' in the previous campaign was 1.59. This year’s xA of 3.52 puts him in the top five creators for the Yellow Submarine, a major improvement on 18/19 where he just about managed to come in at 10th.

Many critics admonished the talent for being a tad selfish by taking too many shots, and he’s trying to link-up with teammates better than he did last season.

This has, undoubtedly, contributed to a lesser return in front of goal this season and the challenge would be attempting to strike a balance in not only creating chances but finishing them off as well.

Indeed, Chukwueze’s heatmap this year vis-a-vis 18/19 shows he doesn’t get into the opponents’ penalty area in the ongoing season as often as he did last term.

While there was an apparent bias for sticking to the right flank, before cutting in to his stronger foot from the inside right channel in his breakout season, this year shows he’s also prepared to stay further infield, occupying positions in which a number 10 would fancy receiving the ball.

This isn’t to suggest the young Nigerian is a playmaker, rather it further strengthens the argument that, while last year saw him focus excessively on goalscoring, this campaign has indeed improved him as a team player.

Despite many observers suggesting Eto’o was being critical, the truth is he wasn’t if the four-time African Footballer of the Year’s assertion is considered alongside the aforementioned narrative.

“He is an incredible player who is growing in leaps and bounds and it’s just a matter of time,” Eto’o told Goal. “He is a quality player and he needs to score more goals, but he has the quality and ability to be more than just a goalscoring forward. Once he gets all of that he will be top.”

While many interpreted the African football legend’s statement as criticism, in reality, it wasn’t that, but a recognition of a player who could grow into one of the finest all-round forwards of his generation so long he keeps improving on the little things.

I am afraid I don't quite agree with your first sentence. World-class and Legend are not quite on the same level. You attain world-class status, then you become a legend. You could definitely get stuck and never attain the legendary status. Even legends at the club level may not necessarily pass as legends in football. Although i agree with your other point. The question get as he be. It's not quite clear what kind of treatment it needs..
Joebie:
I think the term word class is used in a similar vein with legend. However if you ask if a player is world class at a particular moment it can be interpreted as present performance. I think there is something wrong with the question in the first place. I agree with Nerdie. Is Ozil a world class player? Yes, because world class is a status you earn and is somewhat permanent.

But if you ask is Ozil presently a world class player? Don’t the question sound awkward?

So Safarigirl that twitter debate get k leg.
