TheSuperNerd:
Is Eto’o right to criticise Chukwueze?

The Cameroon icon recently claimed the Villarreal man could score more often but should the wideman be given room to breathe given his youth?

In a sense, Samuel Eto’o’s recent assessment of Samuel Chukwueze was understandable. After an encouraging breakout season last year, the Nigeria attacker has tailed off somewhat this year.

The wideman netted five goals in 2018/19 while registering two assists in 19 La Liga starts (26 in total) which wasn’t a bad return for a 19-year-old in his first season as a first-team player.

The fact he posted those figures despite the threat of relegation (Villarreal finished 14th, seven points from 18th, after an arduous campaign) and managerial merry-go-round (Javier Calleja was sacked in December, replaced by Luis Garcia shortly after, only to be reappointed in late January) was equally commendable.

Chukwueze could have scored more too, evidenced by his eight big chances missed statistic, the third-highest in the side behind Karl Toko Ekambi (10) and Gerard Moreno (16), two players who played significantly more than the young forward.

This year, however, has seen a drop in the 2015 U-17 World Cup winner’s end product. Before the Spanish top flight’s suspension, the Umuahia-born player had netted three times and assisted a solitary goal. Given there was hope he’d continue the upward trajectory of his maiden year this season, his decline has been a tad disappointing, but certainly not unexpected.

The development of any talent is usually accompanied by growing pains, and the forward’s apparent slump shouldn’t come as a surprise to observers, Eto’o inclusive.

Still, Chukwueze himself is self-aware enough to know he’s got a lot of improving to do in front of goal. He stated that much in an interview in February, where he agreed he could play better.

“Goals come with luck. I have had a couple of chances this season and I make attempts to convert them but you know you just have to keep trying,” the talented winger told AOI. “I’m actually not bothered because it is still a learning process for me and I know very soon what I have been practicing will start manifesting.”

A comparison of the West African’s time at Villarreal presents interesting observations: in his maiden campaign, the wonderkid shot at goal far more than he is currently doing (1.6 shots per game last year, down to 0.8 this season).

While this slightly explains his paltry return so far in front of goal, it’s also brought forth the wideman’s creative side. He’s already created six big chances in 19/20 from the same number of appearances (although 300 minutes fewer), which is four more than he managed last season.

According to Understat, his 'Expected Assists for' in the previous campaign was 1.59. This year’s xA of 3.52 puts him in the top five creators for the Yellow Submarine, a major improvement on 18/19 where he just about managed to come in at 10th.

Many critics admonished the talent for being a tad selfish by taking too many shots, and he’s trying to link-up with teammates better than he did last season.

This has, undoubtedly, contributed to a lesser return in front of goal this season and the challenge would be attempting to strike a balance in not only creating chances but finishing them off as well.

Indeed, Chukwueze’s heatmap this year vis-a-vis 18/19 shows he doesn’t get into the opponents’ penalty area in the ongoing season as often as he did last term.

While there was an apparent bias for sticking to the right flank, before cutting in to his stronger foot from the inside right channel in his breakout season, this year shows he’s also prepared to stay further infield, occupying positions in which a number 10 would fancy receiving the ball.

This isn’t to suggest the young Nigerian is a playmaker, rather it further strengthens the argument that, while last year saw him focus excessively on goalscoring, this campaign has indeed improved him as a team player.

Despite many observers suggesting Eto’o was being critical, the truth is he wasn’t if the four-time African Footballer of the Year’s assertion is considered alongside the aforementioned narrative.

“He is an incredible player who is growing in leaps and bounds and it’s just a matter of time,” Eto’o told Goal. “He is a quality player and he needs to score more goals, but he has the quality and ability to be more than just a goalscoring forward. Once he gets all of that he will be top.”

While many interpreted the African football legend’s statement as criticism, in reality, it wasn’t that, but a recognition of a player who could grow into one of the finest all-round forwards of his generation so long he keeps improving on the little things.

Loool Owen is a clown. Anyone who doesn't think peak Ozil was World Class is being delusional.
Dude topped the assist charts in Germany, Spain and England.
Broke the record for most chances created in the epl.
Wenger ruined Ozil. I understand trying to make more involved in deep areas of the pitch but playing that guy with Giroud...smh

Dont mind michael owen

Just because ozil is no longer in form means the world class can be taken away from him

Lukaku is already there, maybe if he keep being constitent in seria in the next 2 years

You no get point to give okay, thats why you said the arguement cant hold, you simply have nothing to say than to type he isnt world class

Only a world class player can be consistent for 10 seasons

Where are you looking for consistency when you already claimed that he is there?

The only point you have is that any player with 100 goals is world class and I cannot argue because that's your criteria not mine and you even had to compare lampard with lukaku in the EPL

To me being world class is more than accumulating career goals finito

I did not mean any player wiith 100 goals is world class

I said higuain has scored a 100 goals in every 200 games for at least 2 clubs

Being world class is more than accumulating career goals as a striker ? LOL , maybe being world class is marking as firmino grin

Bros we are talking of a striker here and not a midfielder or defender, higuain job is to score goals okay

Aubameyang is world class according to you and i also agree with that, now tell me why do you call aubameyang world class? because as far as i am concerned auba is always getting the goals just as higuain

Now what has aubameyang done that higuain hasnt done or cannot ?

Even Firmino is considered a World class player so no be today sef
Look at the teams Aubameyang has played for
AC Milan
Etienne
Monaco
Dortmund
arsenal
he was arguably the best striker for these teams and the league, he bossed bundesliga and Premier league even though he is playing for a mediocre team now but higuain asides that 2015/16 with Napoli, nothing again

Would you consider the likes of Ozil and Marcelo world class today?

Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2025 And 2026 World Cup by Joebie: 5:11pm On Jun 12, 2020
I said they are used in a similar vein. That does not mean on the same level. I’m speaking in respect to what happens next after you attain that status in whatever context. While legend can be used at a period that that player etc is not longer active, world class is used when they are still active. It takes a lot to achieve world class status. If a player achieves that status and then lose form for an extended spell, can the player still be described as world class? I say yes.

benji93:
I am afraid I don't quite agree with your first sentence. World-class and Legend are not quite on the same level. You attain world-class status, then you become a legend. You could definitely get stuck and never attain the legendary status. Even legends at the club level may not necessarily pass as legends in football. Although i agree with your other point. The question get as he be. It's not quite clear what kind of treatment it needs..

Yes auba is world class and he isnt the arguement here, he bossed the bundesliga and he is already doing so in the epl

But higuain bossed the seria playing for a Napoli side that current arsenal team is even better then, lol , higuain scored 36 goals in the seria playing for napoli

You dey watch ball so? oga higuain did so well at juventus abeg, higuain did well at mardid napoli and juventus, no come here come lie say na only napoli higuain do well abeg

Auba was the best striker at dortmund, arsenal and st etienne, please remove monaco and co there, he was not good then

I dont know why you dont want to admit the fact that higuain did so well at madrid napoli and juve, should i remind you higuain was a better player than bezema when playing for madrid ? should i remind you that there was a particular season in madrid he outscored CR7?

I was joking with the firmino part, you considered firmino a world class striker but you didnt consider higuain cheesy

Mind you higuain has won juventus player of the season twice, but i am sure you will pretend not to know about that part

Alaye, Higuain is world class. He was Argentina preferred no 9 for over a decade. Every Coach that came prefer him to aguero for a reason. He outscore cr7 while in Madrid during 09/10season.
He scored a record breaking 36 goals in Seria alone while playing for Napoli
Higuain have just bin unlucky for Argentina .

He wasnt that bad in the epl, it was a loan move, chelsea where not playing well, he managed 5 goals in 14 games, he didnt even start all of those games

The problem is he is a late bloomer and he stayed too long in an obscure league like Israel
If he was 23, a lot of big teams will be after him.
It is not everybody that can be very good at 19 but people sometimes dont understand this.
I think he might have 5 more years of football in him. I hope a big team can buy him

We agree to disagree. World-class itself can be used in two lights. Momentarily or extensively(all-time). Was Ozil world-class 5/6 years ago, yes. But all-time, maybe not. He dominated for about 5 years. I consider that borderline all-time. If your argument is, once you attain world-class, even if your form deeps, the potential to ascend to that point still exists, I'll probably take it. Ozil has been a journeyman for over 4 years and still counting. He probably has settled with the journeyman status. If he lost form, and 1 or 2 years into his struggles, you ask me if he is still world-class, I'll probably say yes without thinking twice. 5 years of dominance followed by 4 years of Journey-man status in your role cannot be considered world-class momentarily, and perhaps borderline world-class all-time, IMO.
