I've been going through a delimma for some days now. I'm presently working with a microfinance bank and i earn about 40k after tax. Recently, I was offered a job in government house with a salary slightly above my present salary.

In my present place of work, there is job security and I learn a lot on the job although the salary ain't much. In the new job, there is free accommodation but no job security because I'm being employed by the SA (special assistant) to the governor and i won't be getting any official appointment letter.

The problem now is, I'm stuck between the two. I don't know if I'm to go with the new offer or continue with my present job. I don't want to take a decision that I might regret tomorrow. My fear is that I might be sacked at any time because I'm not employed directly by the government but the SA.

I've been thinking about it and i still don't know the best decision to take. So, I decided to seek advice from nairaland cause I know I can get good advice here.

The SA would hand you over to the next SA. For you to even have connection with an SA is commendable. What is microfinance bank compared to this? With your experience you can always get another microfinance job, albeit, with extra experience with the SA.

No employment letter means your employment can be denied, it also means you can be sacked at any time, as in the guy can wake up tomorrow morning and tell you to pack your load and gedifok for absolutely no reason, and there's nothing you can do, and it means you're another government ghost worker. Oga if they can't employ you the normal way, better stay with the MFB. Use your head! Maybe dem want to use you for ritual and dump you on the road, then there won't be any concrete evidence you were working for them. Never trust any 9ja politician!

I will say this is truly a dicy decision and you should be very carefully while making your choice. If you take the govt job, it will expose you in terms of wider experience and connection. The govt job will open your eyes to certain things like business opportunities and any other hustle which you can survive with even when the govt job is no longer there.
For the microfinance job, bro you can stay there for 20 years without increment in that your salary. Forget the job security cos ones you start small with such orginazation you will keep crawling in your career growth and at the end of the day you might even resign on your own after wasting so many years.
My take, go for the govt job.

Stay with your current job where there is job security and you learn a lot..

Someone resigned from a good paying job to be the personal driver of a one time governor......he loved everything about the new "government job".

Take new job and get more skills (get certified). Ull most likely have more time on your hands

PS : make sure there's at least an official authentic document to show for your time as a network administrator/ ICT manager in a government setup

Ordinarily I would advice that you accept the new offer solely because you may make good connections but my first hand experience of these type of unsecured jobs is not good at all.
First you can be sacked at anytime for any reason.2nd these politically exposed people dont honour their agreements.He may pay you for 1 or 2 months and start owing you till you get angry and leave.
3rd that you know big people does not mean that they would help us when you need them.Most will not pick your calls or reply your messages.

So my advice..Ask yourself what kind of a person is this SA.Can he be trusted?Does he have a history of helping young people?

Have you visited his office to get a sense of the environment you will be working in if you agree.Go there and your intuition will know whether you are meant to be there or not.Goodluck

Are you Male or female? If you are female you better stay in your MF bank job. If you are female, the SA will definitely sack you if you no allow am lash..

But if you be guy, you fit risk am

2-3 yrs is a short time. & u know when new gov assumes office,u & whoever u may think u know,are definitely out.
Taking risks in life is a must & it turns out either way. The new job i believe will fetch u time to venture into side biz. If u have any biz plan u will love to try,then go with the new job. I believe the time frame is enough to build the biz.

@OP if i were you i will not even think twice about the SA job,see life is all about taking risk moving forward and building a strong social contact and working with the SA will definately expose to some top dogs..just be smart and start building your network when you accept the offer trust me you wont regret it

You have a skill as a network administrator and you want to stick with a 40k job?. Go and take the SA job, what you do for him is not what these yours can do, the next govt may need you. What I'm I even saying? Won't you know your way before the tenure ends in 3yrs?

Short story: Stay with your bank Job! If he/she is an SSA or a Special Adviser, maybe I'll say take the risk and make the switch, but for an SA, answer is NO!

Long story: The SA who wants to employ you does not have job security also. An SA is a political appointee, he/she most likely didn't recieve a customized engagement letter detailing his roles and responsibilities for his principal. The governor issues a circular followed immediately by a Press Release that confirms the SA's appointment, so he/she can't give you an engagement letter when he/she most likely doesn't have one. I can go on and on, with regards to the process of documentation for the appointment.

The current salary been proposed by your would be employer will drop I can assure you, governors have cut appointee salaries by a huge margin recently due to cashflow challenges. The bank offers you the best career path coupled with the added bonus of job security. Start building your accounting skills - professional certification is great if you can afford the ICAN classes. If not learn how to use Quickbooks/SAGE and if you have a Banking/Accounting background, brush up on your financial reporting for Not for Profits.

While you are it, take online courses on procurement/supply chain and taxation (basic treatments of income tax and WHT will suffice for now).

Show proof of progress in 6 months and remind me of this thread, I will guarantee you a physical interview for a project that starts next year.
