Nice one. quote author=Venzal post=90265370]WHAT IS COPYWRITING?

Now, we get into the meat and potatoes of this thread.

Don’t forget, the sole aim of this thread is to show you how to hone your email copywriting skill so you can start writing emails for clients and filling your bank account with moolah in the process.

Now, email copywriting is a smaller branch of the big bad guy COPYWRITING.

It’s like saying Benin City is a city under Edo State…

You feel me?

Before we swing fully into the email copywriting side of things, let’s run the rule over Copywriting in general.

This is especially important for you if you are new to all of this.

So… What really is copywriting?

Described as Gary Halbert, legendary copywriter, as the most lucrative skill in the world…

There are a thousand and one definitions out there on the internet about this topic.

But here is one that succinctly describes it best:

Copywriting is salesmanship in print.

And I’ll flesh that out with examples in a bit.

But before I do that, I’d also like to throw in my simple, dumbed-down definition:

“Copywriting is the kind of writing that is done to PROVOKE readers into taking an action.”

The action could be for them to click a link on an AD…

It could be to get them to subscribe to an EMAIL LIST…

It could also be to get them to click a link inside an email…

It could equally be to get them to buy whatever it is you are selling…

This kind of writing is different from writing to entertain people.

Okay, let’s go back to the first definition… that is the “salesmanship in print” definition.

Before the internet became a popular medium, one of the most popular ways of selling was via door-to-door campaigns.

The people who engaged in this practice were called salesmen.

And more often than not, they had a script they were trying to convince prospects from.

With the advent of the internet, this kind of selling was relegated to the background.

And now, with WORDS written on a page on the internet, anyone could reach a larger audience and make hundreds of thousands of dollars from selling their stuff.

Every online business needs copywriting.

And so people (copywriters) who can write words that CONVINCE people to whip out their wallets and buy whatever you are selling became hot properties.

There is something called direct response copywriting (that’s your assignment for today: Google this yourself and see what it means).

One of the highest direct response copywriters in the world, passed away just last month. His name was Clayton Makepeace. He used to make serious MILLIONS every year as a direct response copywriter!

Now, I have to let you know that a lot of the money Mr. Makepeace earned came from something called ROYALTIES.

That is, businesses pay him a pre-agreed amount for every sale the copy he wrote for them brought in.

That is discounting the original fee they paid for him to initially write their package (which is usually in the six figure dollars range).

Then there is Dan Kennedy – I think he is currently the #1 copywriter in the world right now that Mr. Makepeace has gone to rest.

Then there is this African-American lady, Carline Anglade-Cole, who makes at least $1M a year writing for clients as a copywriter (here is her website: carlinecole.com).

Then there is another guy called David Garfinkel who charges $25,000 for copywriting mentorship… and he charges businesses up to $100K to write their packages!

Now, why am I giving you all of these examples?

I just want to show you that putting in the work to become a great copywriter can be a very, very rewarding experience.

You may be wondering, why will businesses invest all these huge sums into one person to help them just sting common words together?

Well, imagine this…

If I paid you $100 to write one email for me…

And I send that email to my audience to sell them a $97 dollar product…

If that your one email brings in 10 sales, that makes up $970, right?

Now, I only paid you $100 to work your magic on my email.

Have I not now made a profit of $870?

That is how business owners think.

And that is why if you are DARN GOOD at what you do, they are ready to ‘chuck’ thick wads into your hands so you can write words that help them make money.

Now there are VARIOUS forms of copywriting out there:

AD copywriting – where you write ads for business owners. Ads like FB ads, instagram ads, Google ads, banner ads etc.

Email Copywriting – where you will help businesses write emails to sell their products to their EMAIL LIST.

Sales Letter Copywriting – Where you will write relatively long (7 pages and above) copies that are meant to sell a product on a WEB PAGE.

VSL Copywriting – VSL means Video Sales Letter. You will write video scripts for a video sales letter.

And so much more.

Now, you could decide to learn all these arms of copywriting in one fell swoop.

But the truth is, it’s going to take time, effort, and money to fully cut your teeth as a do-it-all copywriter.

So my simple advice to anyone trying to profit as a copywriter is to learn email writing first.

For me, it’s like the low-hanging fruit of copywriting.

Once you have a grasp of what ticks people… what emotions drive response… what people want to hear…

It becomes easier for you when you start moving up the ladder into mainstream copywriting.

I hope you understand this.

The whole essence of this particular lesson was to give you a sweeping view of copywriting and get you into the mind of a copywriter.

I don’t know if I have done a good job of it.

If I have not, I hope as we continue to progress you start to gain clarity.

But like I will always say, you can learn from various sources. So put your research skill into effect and start to gain clarity on what it means to become a copywriter.

Alternatively, you can post your hard-nosed questions as a comment below, and I’ll do my best to do much justice to it.

That’s all for now.

2 more lessons falling in today, once I have had the chance to edit them.

Stay tuned. Stay blessed.

/Peace, Love, & Light/

This is nice. The way to mastery from time immemorial has been practice.

Of course, you can't just become a globe trotting master copywriter except you put in the hard yards (like Oga Venzal will say).

What could be worse? There is nothing like mastery in copywriting.
The revered guys just have higher confidence levels and maybe a few dollar churning copywriting tricks up their sleeves -nothing you can't learn.

Your copy has a lot of grammatical mistakes though.

Don't throw me that "grammar is not the aim for writing copy" look. "This wonderful products"? I'll just pass. Gratias.

Lol...just trying to sound like a copywriter grin
I'm so taking this whole copywriting thing serious. Digital skills are the way to go. You did well though. We'll get there.

So after days of lecture from Venzal and writing out Ben's newsletter daily, I decided to try out my first sample grin

Kindly rate it over 10 smiley

Category: Dating Course ("Now she's wrapped in your palm" )

Email 1

Subject: She's obsessed with you man, how did you do it?

"She's been texting you all day man, respond! The relentless chirping of your phone won't let me rest"

Those were the exact words Samuel, a reader of my newsletter, sent to me in an email.

Apparently, his roommate has like a "container-load" of girls in his life and he literally has a timetable for each of them - and I'm not even kidding.

Samuel asked his roommate why he didn't flinch or respond to the incessant texts from his "supposed" girl.

His roommate told him he had earlier informed the girl to come over on Tuesday evening - meanwhile this event occurred on a Saturday.

"Why Tuesday? Why not tomorrow? Since you said you'll be home all day" Samuel asked.

His roommate responded saying he was going to be busy doing a lot of exercises.

Samuel immediately understood what he meant and asked how he does it - make these girls crave him so bad and even be so needy about it.

I mean, these are girls that have other guys literally begging them in their DMs.

These girls ignore over 50 guys only for them to be ignored by the one guy they want so badly.

You don't want that for yourself?

You don't want these girls all over you, craving your attention?

Samuel wanted that for himself and that was why he shot me that email.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to turn you into a "brostitute" or a serial player, I'm just going to show you how you can have that girl wrapped in your palm.

Samuel said his roommate didn't want to let him on the secret.

Let me give you one for free my man:

Be playfully challenging.

That's it.

This was the tip of the iceberg I gave Samuel, now he's definitely chewing neck-deep into the barbecued whole chicken of value he ordered here:

I tried upwork sometime in 2016 and was rejected, I gave up and continued life as a Video director, then sometime in November 2019, I was at a very low point in my life, finances was not coming in as much as it should, I was managing. That time was one of the times I thought so much about my life, I pondered on so many businesses I could startup with the finance I had, but then, I finally decided to try upwork again, and, I did, and was accepted instantly, before trying, I read a lot of articles on opening an upwork account, I knew the questions that were asked while opening already, so I took my time to properly write it, and just copied and pasted in their respective fields, I was glad, but that was just the beginning, upwork was not friendly for starters at all, it was difficult, I was wasting my connects applying for any and every job I see, I never got even an interview, then I went online and read about writing proposals, studied it very well, watched over 6 hours of upwork related tutorials on YouTube, watched a video editor called Jack Cole on YouTube, he is a freelancer video editor on upwork, watched so many of his tutorials and built on it, by that time, my free 20 connects were long gone already, I was not discouraged, I bought 20 connects again and again, while still studying writing a catchy proposal, until I mastered the art, I finally got a job for a monthly pay of $100 dollars making a short 2 minutes video daily, it was not the best, but i needed the reviews, so I took the job anyways, all this time, I never left my main job o, by the way, this client was the most frustrating person I have ever done business with in my life, it started well at first, he was a naval officer in Australia, I was doing well until my village people remembered me, all of a sudden, my laptop crashed, see wahala I, tried fixing, all to no avail, na there problem start, I had to be running to my friends house every day to use his pc to get the job done and send to this man, my motivation was not the pay, it was the much needed review, I was to submit a video latest by 9pm daily, 9:05pm, this man is already on my whatsapp asking where the video was, ah ah, see wahala o, for $100 dollars?

Well, I endured and kept on working, I took out some money to get a manageable 4gb ram laptop that wanted to frustrate my life, for those that are into video production, you will understand how terrible it is to run premiere on a 4gb core i3 laptop, you will almost be crying, if you are not careful, you will slam the laptop on the floor, exporting a 2 minutes clip can take up to an hour, everything was just frustrating, I endured it, I had no choice, I was determined, I loved upworks premium feel, I hated fiver due to the way those Indians have littered everywhere with their terrible English while sending proposals, plus, upwork had longterm benefits, so I stuck with upwork, anyways, after the first month of working with this man, enduring everything and making sure I was on time, I told the man I was increasing my rates, he asked how much, I told him 1k dollars, the man shock, I said it just to ward him off, cos if I decide to just pull out, he may give me a bad review and that will defeat the whole purpose of my 1 month suffering, he wanted to pay 200 a month, I no gree, I run before him frustrate me, well, he tried to pay me 6h dollars for a livestream job where he wanted me to be streaming at least 20 hours of music every day to his YouTube channel (just imagine as money too much for this man o), well, I rejected, where will I get stable unlimited internet in Nigeria and also stable 24 hours light? Or is it with my small 4gb Laptop I will use to stream? Wetin I want come use edit?

Well, I was sad that I left my only job, and went back to the labor market (upwork) for a new job, by the way, before I landed my first job, I spent over 1 month submitting proposals without even an interview, back to the story, after about 2 more weeks, I have almost exhausted the 100 dollars on connects again, I landed another low paying job, 30 freaking godam sports videos for 300 dollars, who does that? 1 Video can take me 4 hours to make o, anyways, they say a bird at hand is better than hundreds in the sky, I accepted the job, and completed the project, this client was far more understanding, unlike the first guy that almost made me start going on x videos to get the particular sultry (but not porn) videos he wanted me to work on. grin

Completed the project, and got more, it was low paying and wasn't the best, but i enjoyed it cos I loved football, and editing football clips was fun for me, from there, I got another client which was moderately fair, to cut the long story short, about 3 months down the line, I had earned over 1.5k dollars, some weeks ago, I just got my JSS badge with 94%, I am in my 3rd top rated eligible week, with over 6k earnings already, I don't do jobs less than $100 dollars, the same sports videos I did for $10 each back then, I don't do for less than $200 each now, my whatsapp is filled with clients from all over the world, yesterday, I declined 2 invitation to interview, I have about 6 long term clients that I earn nothing less than 5h dollars per week from, apart from the occasional clients that comes to me every now and then to work for them, I have a constant assurance of $300 weekly from one of my hourly job, i have over 120 connects in my account untouched, cos I don't even have to submit proposals, jobs just comes, I accepted a new job yesterday, today, I got a text all the way from US asking me to work for him (referrals),i am thinking of downgrading my account to the regular upwork account cos I don't think I will be needing their connects anytime soon, so they can stop taking my 15 dollars monthly, moral of the story.

Doing those jobs all those times, enduring the pressure, the constant struggle to keep up, the competition, reinvesting all my earnings into upwork at some point, my first 3 earnings went back to upwork, I didn't even withdraw, it was difficult, it was never easy, I was very discouraged, I almost gave up, but i am glad I didn't.

Today, my dear 4gb ram laptop has become decoration on my desk, used sparingly to write scripts, i now own 2 8gb ram laptops, core i7, a 16gb ram core i7, and a 32gb ram core i7, all bought from upwork earnings, the rest they say is history, I am glad I took this path, don't give up, be professional, try as much as you can to please your clients, I have 3 other people working under me, I am even thinking of how to properly establish the company and employ more with upwork being my major source for clients, I have lots of good reviews to the extent that even upwork is asking me to submit my cv so they can see the possibility of dissolving me into one special freelance package wey me no even understand sef, but it has benefits according to them sha, it is well my people.

Just felt to share my story to encourage you all.

Doing those jobs all those times, enduring the pressure, the constant struggle to keep up, the competition, reinvesting all my earnings into upwork at some point, my first 3 earnings went back to work, I didn't even withdraw, it was difficult, it was never easy, I was very discouraged, I almost gave up, but I am glad I didn't.

Today, my dear 4gb ram laptop has become decoration on my desk, used sparingly to write scripts, I now own 2 8gb ram laptops, core i7, a 16gb ram core i7, and a 32gb ram core i7, all bought from Upwork earnings, the rest they say is history, I am glad I took this path, don't give up, be professional, try as much as you can to please your clients, I have 3 other people working under me, I am even thinking of how to properly establish the company and employ more with Upwork being my major source for clients, I have lots of good reviews to the extent that even Upwork is asking me to submit my cv so they can see the possibility of dissolving me into one special freelance package wey I no even understand sef, but it has benefits according to them sha, it is well my people.

Just felt to share my story to encourage you all.
Can I have your WhatsApp contact?
And I will like you to train me on becoming a video editor like you. thanks

You write well boss. Kudos.

good morning everyone, nice thread by our Oga, I remember back then on Fiverr, very frustrating, upwork can lift one, faster.

I run an Upwork account and I lost my only means of verification.. how can I get this ID verification done. I'm done with the video verification, it's just the ID, it is a Nigerian account.

Yeah, that's why many top freelancers won't recommend Upwork for us, the beginners.

Even their service charge 20% is on the high side. The only good thing about them is that you'll see enough jobs to apply to.

Hopefully, you'll get a job before you exhaust your free connects.

Yes, you will have to buy connects to send proposals to clients. To buy more connects, go to Settings, click on Membership and connects. That is where you will get to see it.

Note: You can get to see the connects option via browser like Google Chrome not through the Upwork app.

I experienced issues setting up my payment. I selected direct bank transfer and after inputting every info, I was told the name on my account didn't match with the name I registered with upwork. The problem was I registered using my email which was a shorter version of my real name. I have changed to my complete name though, but they said it will take up to 48 hrs for it to reflect. Please for those of you registering on upwork, endeavour to register with the name that corresponds to the one on your bank account. My write up is a bit long but learn from my mistake. We rise by lifting others.
please, how did you edit your name.?
