madakiagwom: I don't think it's about whether your HOD is willing to give you a reference or about whether you were paid but rather about whether you were actually performing the graduate assistant duties in the said letter. If you were, abeg carry go....no problem. If you weren't, then don't do it. For your conscience sake, for the sake of money lost if you are found out and rejected and for the sake of others coming after you who will have a tougher time with VOs' extra scrutiny. 3 Likes |

madakiagwom: Were u working as graduate assistant & studying part time at the other school The question is not whether you were paid during the period but did u also perform the duties?? Had it been that you got ur msc from the same school u are working at or within the same country, that can easily fly. Mind u, the vo is gonna scrutinize the reasons why an organization that spent so much money to train u (with the expectation that you will come back to work for them) would actively support u to become a pr in another country immediately you returned from study leave. That scrutiny will go beyond ur HOD. I’m not expressly saying that it’s not gonna work; but that it’s a long shot 3 Likes |

That's not relevant to PR decision if the applicant satisfies the requirements. However, should paid study leave count as work experience? My take.. if employed to undertake a research Masters, then it may qualify. Otherwise, you can't have job description as a grad assistant different from your current study. Here the Masters was even done in another school which could call to question the acceptability of the job experience, School "A" may not employ you, and your supposed work experience (Masters) from School "B" iwinosajack: |

NaijaGoingMaple: Did i say it is “relevant to PR decision “? No! What i am saying is that the vo will scrutinize the reference letter from the HOD to make sure it’s from the school authorities. |

iwinosajack: NaijaGoingMaple: iwinosajack: Amanee: I've been working in a university for almost a decade now. University job is not solely teaching, but it also covers research and development. MSc study is part of his research duties to the university. Based on the rules and guidelines of working in a university, he has worked for three years. He is not doing anything fishy. The main responsibility of a graduate assistant is to ensure he runs his/her research towards earning an MSc degree within the first three years of employment. Some universities will even terminate your appointment if you fail to earn an MSc within the first three years. Although he/she is on study leave, such a person is expected to affiliate his/her publications to his Uni. This covers his duty of "conducting research" If he has assisted in teaching during his first few months or when he comes for holidays (In my Uni we don't allow grad assistants to teach), his HOD can add that to his duties in the reference letter. He is expected to conduct any duty assigned to him by the HOD (for example while studying, depending on the level of understanding between the staff, you may be asked to assist with editing articles for journals hosted by the department, assisting with preparation for conference to be hosted by your dept, etc) In recap, while he is filing for promotion, the years he spent on study leave will be counted as part of his years of experience, that is why NUC recommended that an academic staff on study leave could be promoted once while on fellowship. Thus his three years is part of his years of experience. 10 Likes 1 Share |

As someone in a similar position, I don’t think you have any issue claiming 3years experience as long as your research is relevant to fulfilling your role as a GA. In fact you cannot progress in academics without further studies. And in actual sense, while you were away gathering requisite postgraduate experience for your job, the university recognized you as their full-time staff. You were still EMPLOYED! Therefore, your job description during that 3-year period is covered by, and the same as your PG experience. More so, if you have to sum your total work experience in academia, you wouldn’t subtract your years of study leave, will you? Be convinced of these facts and present a strong justification in your LOE for the VOs review. Let the VO see a strong link below your job description as a GA and any technical skill learned/applied during your research. 6 Likes |

hello everyone Please I am asking for a relative We noticed his skilled job falls in level A (software engineer/designer) but requires university education, The problem is he doesn't have a university education for this. He actually passed through NIIT for a 3year diploma course, was meant to complete the final year in UK to be awarded the Bsc but due to unfortunate event could not afford to go. Since then he has been working as a software engineer/developer. What are his options Would he still be eligible for express entry. Someone should please help me. Thanks in anticipation |

Hi Guys! I've just glanced through and seen what looks like a debate regarding claiming work experience points whilst studying. I haven't read all the details but I just wanted to let you know that YES YOU CAN. I did it myself and countless others have done it successfully too. You can do this as long as it was outside Canada. Please CLICK HERE to read more about this. ps: When you do research, please make sure you're reading about FSW and not CEC. 5 Likes 3 Shares |

BibiKK: its good as you have hnd ....evaluate both your certificates and it should read as two or more. with that you don't need any extra course. |
