The lines that follow reveal how the cult was formed at the University of Ibadan (AKA Mothership or Modaship) . Mothership’s mast, hoisted Black Jack; To mark a new beginning Her deck was built by hands: The "Black Jack" is a symbol of war in piratical lore. It is usually depicted with a skull and bones. This is evident in the logo of the Buccaneers confraternity. The symbol of the cult is an archetype for death and human mortality. "deckhand" refers to the lay members of the cult who are usually initiates of a specific deck or frigate. 7 Likes 1 Share |

Handpicked Crew, with noble guts In the puzzle of “Who is Ripe?” He could’ve gone against the grain But a clash of jaw to jaw, Revealed the chaff and grain in play The above lines of the poem refer to the first initiation and membership of BAN. The "Crew" here, of course, refers to the Pieces of Eight (EXCO Members) of BAN. In finding "who is ripe", Riccado continued the Seadog's tradition of "jaw-jaw" which is meant to be part of the initiation process. You must go through this process before you are qualified to be a Sealord. This is why the "jaw-jaw" separates the "chaff" or the weak from the "grain" or the strong. 13 Likes 1 Share |

The lubber was killed in them Enough, to make a soul skillful For tribe and tongue is null, A Buccaneer is fair and square Having seen and known the Light The first line above uses the word "lubber". The word was morphologically derived from "landlubber". A landlubber or a lubber is one who is not skilled in the art of sailing. Buccaneers use the word to refer to non-initiates of the confraternity. "High Lubber", however, refers to members of other confraternities. Since this segment of the poem continues from the previous one, you can clearly see how the "jaw-jaw" is meant to "kill" the "lubber" in Sealords to be and make them "skillful". The idea of tribe and tongue being null relates to one of the four "compass points" of the Pyrates confraternity (Against Tribalism). Ricca simply reimagined it in BAN. Even the line that says a Buccaneer is "fair and square" is a reimagination of one of the 3-4-7 creedo of Pyrates Confraternity. The last line says "having seen and known the Light". In BAN, all Sealords must see the light before they can be considered fully initiated. It is part of the process. 16 Likes 2 Shares |

Bag of Salt, is worth a sail Since we sail in the path of Ricca, A Buccaneer, is a Riccaneer The goal, was never to tarry In Buccaneer parlance, a sealord who successfully graduates becomes "salted" or "salt-coated". You move from ABC (decks) to XYZ (frigates and galleons). The first line in the poem above reveals that all Buccanneers idolise the idea of getting a "bag of salt". Ricca Ricardo actually graduated and even got his PhD before he died. Being a "Riccaneer" means you must follow in the path of Ricca Ricardo (being an intellectual). Unfortunately, many Buccanneers lose sight of this and delve into violence. The "goal was never to tarry" but many have lost their lives in the adventure. I am not quite surprised. If you "see the light" in a confraternity that says "blood is for blood", why won't you see violence as a normal thing? 11 Likes 2 Shares |

A Cigarette, may seem like Trebor But deep down, it is not one If you are choppin Tirebo, Give your broda small to chop In Buccaneer parlance, "chopping trebor" is associated with revealing yourself to your "brodas". However, there is the concept of "Wekunle" too. You are not permitted to "chop trebor" (reveal your identity or the secrets of the cult) to non-initiates. If you do that, you become a "lagger". "Wenkule" is a "lagger". 9 Likes 1 Share |

I have to skip some parts . I don't want my entire analysis to be online yet. I am writing a research paper on this. The deck was set to move Rigid CLASP, in profound recall; Held fast, to keep brodas aligned Cold breeze, from rough Sea hounds The Red Cloak, kept him warm As bonfire was guided to flame, Major Sally, drowned the storm Where are the sallying Sea Lords? You already know what "deck" means at this point. The "Rigid CLASP" in the second line above refers to the secret handshake of the Buccaneers. It can be in different forms but the basic form involves the clasping of the fist in another's member's fist. Almost all cults seem to have derived their secret handshake from Pyrates Confraternity with some modifications. The "Red Cloak" refers to the regalia of the "Big Eye" (leader of the deck) or Frigate Captain. "Bonfire" is self-evident. However, "Major Sally" is a play on words used to reflect the idea that Buccaneers are meant to "sally" (dance around bonfires with their songs). They have a way of using traditional drums to add musical value to the sally sessions. They usually have sally sessions based on regular or fixed schedules at the deck or frigate level or at their national conferences (called convajs). 6 Likes 1 Share |

My final analysis will be based on the last lines: When the Call bellows, ALORA The vile and deaf, tremble In the spirit of foremost sail, The Decree, remains AWUMEN. "Alora" is the traditional call of the Buccaneers. This word precedes their pseudonyms and is akin to pyratical names in PC which are preceded with "Ahoy". You can have weird names like Alora Looting for Fingers, Alora Killer Disciple, Alora Mecca Morocco, Alora Jesus is Coming, Alora Sailing for Treasure, Alora Killer Assistant (THIS IS SOMEONE'S REAL NAME), Alora Pussy Pussy Cat, etc. These names are usually given as part of the initiation process. Some are funny, others are weird, and a few are quite disturbing. The names usually follow the 231 Buccaneer syllabic pattern. "Awumen", on the other hand, is used as a sort of answer to prayers, declarations, etc. If you have specific questions or need more details, you can ask them. I will end here. I have more than 50 data on Buccaneer alone. We have been treating ONLY ONE! I am willing to do this with other confraternities too. I hardly have time as I am busy with research and writing. I will try my best in any case. It's good to have an academic angle to this issue. All in all, #saynotocultism @Accountability: I believe I have shown enough goodwill for you to fasttrack my research if you have "privileged" information. 33 Likes 2 Shares |

JasperVII: I have been working on Sociolinguistics (the connection between language and society) for a while now. I'm currently at the doctoral level. I have done ample research on religious and violent cults and gangs in the Western world. The next phase of my research is to look at how language is deliberately used to create "belonging" and to remove/alienate "outsiders" in Nigerian cult-formations. When I found this thread, I was glad. I learnt some things from the experiences recounted here. 37 Likes 1 Share |

ndoeyopbennet:Wow doctoral level, I'm humbled. It's not easy. I have to say that what you posted here is very educating even though I'm not sure it will be of any use to me(no offense) since I'm not interested in learning the language of any cult group, others on the other hand may find it very useful. I'm still waiting for other guy to know what he has to say. More success on your research sir. 8 Likes |

ndoeyopbennet:Bro,No Kidding me you must be a sailor because you write like one. Love Peoms alot, So I wrote this like a Peom. You must be a Sailor Yes,you sail with Course. And Keep on Course. Because,it is said "Only he that lives by the River Banks knows the True Cry of a Crocodile. Your Ship is starting Sail but Stir am well. I guess you know, It's best you knew, Any Ship without the right set of crew and passengers onboard is bound to Sink. Everyone here to you is seemingly going to the same destination as you but based on what I know some will heed the advice to flee from Cults, And some will still make it the desired destination for themselves. Yes,The Desire to Belong. Just so you know that where people get off is more of an reflection on themselves, than it is of you. Motives are best know to self. And every sensible deed Should start with a question to self. I will say this just ones the true sense of sailing still remains with he that embarks but it's best you flee. Yes,it's best you flee coz not all sailors are skilled. Some are there to Wreck the Ship and wreck their lives. There will be a few that make the adventure their life with the believe it is their property. How can safe guard some thing that was stolen from you? And along the way, Some one will go and chop, Chop all the trebor he packed. The lagger To one lobber And that lobber to another lobber. To keep a Secret, Is having no Secret at all. The aim here is to Flee To flee away from Cults. Yes,Flee from all of them. Yes, no possibility They are even making sense at all. I will Be very grateful if kids here will heed. It bleeds my heart to See No frat Can Mind it's own. The Hate in Love is Wild. It makes no sense at all. The Evil in it is Clear. It's clear for all to see. Nothing is hidden at all. No, nothing is hidden at all. The more you look The less,You see It's just like a mirage. Nothing to look for no more. Nothing to look forward to no more. Threads like these are rare to find And when you find one, don't let it go without. Without picking the Right from Evil. Without learning to leave the things The things you live to fear. One thing I have learnt is to be wary of sneaky things and people alike. Another thing I learnt in this is to very wary of what is wrong and people who sneak on others at will. Then those who show up with little or no good intentions but acting like they have been good all fking life. It's always easy to be a Judge. It's always hard to play the accused. Friends will come and go. Some that Stood by you. Will be the first to depart when the Sky begins to fall. They will all run away. And There will be ones who secretly try to get off the Ship and try to swim their way And those very publicly will jump off the Ship, drowning themselves Leaving recklessly behind all their Freights and Treasures. Everything they Saw onboard. In life Be weary of Such. Suicidal is their name. But If someone tries to get off your ship - don't be angry or hold a grudge, let them be. It is Better to Change your course and Sail along. Finally,it is best you heed the theme and (SayNoToCultism) and forget the Junks being fed. Be Blessed as I take my leave. My leave of absence take. 12 Likes |

ndoeyopbennet: Let me add this, the adoption of the name sequel to BAN "SEA LORDS" as against PC confraternity they broke out from "SEA DOGS" was brought about thus. "every dog has a master, and that master is his lord".// this statement was to show supremacy between them and PC. Due to circumstances involved in separation of BAN from PC. You see statement of seeing the light. They meant the light BAN has by brought as opposed to which the PC limited them to... Let me drop here tho.. Nice write up 11 Likes |

Passionate888: His name was Dr. Bolaji Carew. He died in 2015. He was assisted by Kunle Adigun in the formation of the confraternity in 1972. They adapted some things from Pyrates Confraternity. They also read a novel entitled Fanny Campbell by Maturin Murray Ballou and got some Buccaneer privateering ideas from there. I don't consider what the guy wrote as a threat. I have nothing to hide as my intentions were clear from the onset. I enjoyed his poetry though. I wonder why he deactivated his account. I would have engaged his poem to his delight. 11 Likes |

Hi all, interesting thread and contributions. I have noticed something and i have been meaning to ask why... Been thinking certain events probably contributed to why it is that way My question is - Why do all the other cult groups seem to always go to war with / hate the Ayes Its always Eiye /Aye, Bucca/Vikings going to war with Aye.. And sometimes, two cult groups will team up to fight them. It also seems Eiyes hate Ayes the most and vice versa. Any reason for this? What exactly is the issue? Is there a creed that makes them hate the ayes? How come those ayes seem to have no friends /allies I am just curious 5 Likes 1 Share |

hustla: Do not understestimate the power of "cult culture". Once one is motivated to became a member and eventually does, it appears that he devotes most of his brain power to learning the traditions of the cult. This can sometimes take a while for those who are not quick-witted but they eventually learn most of their history and cult-traditions (otherwise called OT). The level of intelligence and efficiency that they use in mastering their cult-traditions, history, signals, signs, etc is quite astounding. Unfortunately, not many can replicate this rare commitment with their academic studies. If they could, all cultists should be intellectuals. 22 Likes 2 Shares |

ndoeyopbennet: True I listened to that of the Vikings on YouTube and it's a bit complicated. All the while, what was on my mind was how someone will dedicate his time to memorizing lots of words that sound like jargons Them Vikings seem to have a close / similar culture to the Buccaneers for some reason and their lingo seems to be the most complicated From this thread too, it seems Vikings have a lot of infighting or mutiny as it is called. Just my own observation though 1 Like |

The funny part is most buccaneers don't even know this. Autocracy is one of the four points of SADB in SEC. Ask any average airlord to spell autocracy and you will see wonders. Tell an average axeman to give you a brief history on Africa and you will see the stupidity of joining a cult.. What is the point of going to the bush when you can open a whatsapp group and share information? What is the point in going through meaningless torture in the name of initiation? To prove that you are strong? Strong enough to withstand bullets? What is the point in paying dues to your fellow student so he can flex while you starve? How do you feel when you see your former classmate bringing his benz to your Oga's carwash so you can wash his car? How will you be able to sleep at night when you finally realise you wasted your life trying to prove that blue is better than yellow? What do you do when you are surrounded and you realise the game is up, that you are about to be killed and there's nothing you can do about it? Be wise 70 Likes 1 Share |

hustla: Yes. I agree with you on the shared ethos between Vikings and Buccaneers. Indeed, the Vikings Confraternity (or Norsemen K-Club) is based on sailing, just like Pyrates and Buccaneers. However, the key difference is that while Pyrates and Buccaneers are based on 16th-17th century pirates and privateers on the Atlantic Ocean axis (Europe and North America), Vikings is based on a much older Scandinavian group of nomadic warriors who held sway prior to the 12th century. Viking cult language is influence by old Norse, some Latin and, of course, some Nigerian touch. Their language was one of the easiest for me to decrypt because the logic and mythology behind it is quite clear. I don't really have any issue with it. However, the Vikings cult seem to have inherited the inclination towards violence from Old Norse mythology which is evident in their language and tradition. You also find some Ikwerre or seemingly Igbo words too (this is no surprise as the cult started at the University of Port Harcourt). You should be careful of listening to those cult songs though. They can subconsciously create a desire for you to "belong" or at the very least, they can make you idealise the cults. Do not listen to them if you are influenced strongly by music. 32 Likes |
