WHY PDP WILL NOT FIELD OBASEKI DESPITE HIS BAGS OF MONEY

The other day, I declared that I would stop talking about politics here if the PDP fields Obaseki. And that was no light vow to me, as talking politics here is fun and life to me.... And what will life be like if I stopped talking it. Like my people would say, okuko hapu kwom kwom kwom, ya ewere gini zuo umu (if the hen stops doing kwom kwom kwom, with what would she feed her chicks)?

Today, I want to raise the stake a bit higher as we look at why the PDP will never give its ticket to Obaseki.

1. The talks about some inconsistencies in Obaseki's credentials are not pointless as his supporters would want everyone to believe. Yes, this may look like early revenge by Oshiomhole, but that in no way makes light the existing issues in Obaseki's credentials. PDP knows this and is not fooled!

2. PDP will fancy their chances in the Edo election. Presently, PDP has 3 candidates in Edo. And honestly none of them looks like a strong candidate. PDP truly missed Pastor Ize-Iyanmu. But despite not having such strong candidate, the worst position PDP will get in Edo is 2nd position, runner-up to the APC. However, with the current crises in the APC, PDP will always believe that even if APC wins in Edo, there could be some legal loopholes that the APC could leave which would be exploited to the advantage of the runner-up.

3. Obaseki has money. PDP need his money and of course they need his supporters too. So, PDP will want to keep him. However, they won't throw the ticket in his lap. They may choose come out plain to him by telling him outright that they can't afford to take a risk with him. They may show him why it is reasonable that he stays and makes PDP stronger, and maybe help them win. The battle in Edo will always be between APC and PDP. If Obaseki stays in PDP and supports another PDP candidate to win, he would be protected, and he would still be relevant in Edo. He knows what an APC victory in Edo would mean to him. The hawks would swoop on him. So, if he is wise, the most reasonable thing to do is to work for PDP victory whether or not he gets the party's ticket.

4. PDP on the other hand may just lead him on, collect the little they can collect from him before the primaries, and allow him to go if he gets reticent and chooses to go.

5. Yes, PDP loves money, and can easily be bought. That's true. If Obaseki is cleared, and goes on to contest the primaries, I have no doubt in my mind that he will emerge. But will the PDP shut their eyes, collect money and clear him even when they know the risks involved?

6. Oshiomhole threatened that APC would go to court if Obaseki emerges the flag bearer of PDP. PDP have lawyers, and their lawyers must have been studying the situation around Obaseki. He claims to have the originals of his certificates now. That could be true, but he still has his affidavits with the INEC, the affidavit has some issues too. There are other documents he used in 2016; has he withdrawn those documents he gave INEC in 2016, the same documents for which the PDP went to court against him in 2016, and the case was struck out not due to lack of merit. Can he withdraw them and replace them with the originals which he says he has now?

There are ongoing talks between Obaseki and the party. But I feel strongly that a party which still has hope in the election will never completely throw away their opportunity for money.
