Job Or Scholarship? by Nobody: 3:13pm On Jun 18, 2020
Dear Nairalanders,

This has been giving me sleepless night since both came together. I'm a Fresh Engineering Graduate, finished Nysc early last year and got a full time job with one of the Tier-1 banks in Nigeria. The same month, I got a congratulatory mail for a fully sponsored oversea scholarship for Msc degree in China starting September this year. Along the line, while pursuing for my passion in Engineering, I equally got a job with a multinational telecom Company. At this point in life, I'm very confused on the one to go for. Please I need your Elderly advise and contribution on what to do with these offers as I am very confused at the moment.
Thanks in anticipation for your candid response.

Taken the job and after sometime you can appy for study leave and get your Master.

I have lots of friends that went china for Msc ,I did mine in Nigeria... We are both in Nigeria.

Assuming its European countries scholarships now...just go straight because getting jobs before finishing Msc is 99.0% sure.

All the best in Whatever your decision

It totally depends, first of all think about what you want to do...determine the end before you start with any of the options, where will the master's take you? where will either of the jobs take you?

Also, you did not drop specifics, what branch of Engineering did you study? The bank and telecom jobs are they in your area of specialization, can you build a career on them? How secure are the jobs, are they permanent positions? can you do the job for another 3-4 years?

According to billionaire Jack Ma, your first job is the most important, and you should stay on it long enough to learn how to do it, because once you learn how to do one thing and perfect it, you can always learn how to do another. I belive him...all the degrees in the world can never equate to solving a problemin real life. And you solve real life problems on the job, not in school.

Lastly, how old are you? Do you have age on your side? if you are still 21 for example, you can just go for your masters and you're fine, but if you are say 25-26 it's better in my opinion to take the most appropriate job and build some experience towards a career.

Thanks for your response, I am 26 years old and studied Mechanical Engineering. The bank job is a Graduate Trainee role and a full time Permanent role when absorbed into the system while the Telecom job is equally a trainee role and full time when absorbed into the system.

And the scholarship in what field and what school? Can you envision this master's opening doors for you after? If not, it might be better you take a job, have some savings, have a foundation and then consider further education if you still have the appetite. Prioritise skills too, degrees can even be studied on line. Anyways, these are my own perspectives.

In the end you'll be the one to decide, because only you know what you really want.
