Alaska90: You will find some ETFs that track the broad indices like QQQ for the NASDAQ-100 and SPY for S&P 500. There are also some that track particular sectors like XLF for banks and SMH for semiconductor companies. Newbies should start with indices whilst they read up on investing and as their investing capital and knowledge grow, they could consider the more risky bets on individual companies. If you think of the logic of it, buying an individual company is the equivalent of putting all eggs in one basket, even if you buy several such companies. In contrast, if you buy an index of 500 companies you have good diversification which is crucial for risk management even if you forgo the small probability of making a killing in individual stocks. This article highlights the problem though I don't share the bond buying view. Most stocks will cost you money. An even larger number make for lousy bets; instead of being rewarded for taking some risk, you’d likely be better off buying risk-free bonds. At least, that’s the case in the US, said University of Arizona finance professor Hendrik Bessembinder in 2017, following a groundbreaking study examining the performance of almost 26,000 US stocks over a 90-year period. https://www.irishtimes.com/business/personal-finance/most-stocks-are-flops-just-1-of-stocks-account-for-all-market-gains-1.3973200?mode=amp So only buy individual stocks if you are well experienced and can afford to lose much of your capital! PS: In bear markets and again for those with money to burn and good investing experience, there are short ETFs you can buy if you are using one of those Naija apps like Chaka and Trove. Examples: Short S&P 500 (SH), Short Russell 2000 (RWM). 4 Likes 2 Shares |

So the media has succeeded in scaring the shit out of investors with a second wave of Corona virus. Stocks started tanking mid-day (US time). Apple is closing 11 stores in Florida, Arizona, North & South Carolina. This may be a good time to get stay-at-home stocks. Also to buy dips in Apple. I expect airline, cruise and restaurant stocks to tank further. |

Personal Experience: I started stock investing/trading in Nigerian stocks around December 2016 . I have made more money from dividends than from trading. My dividends from United Capital Plc alone have covered all my gains and losses put together...so i thinks that s works for me. Find your own ooo but sometimes i do follow follow to trade 3 Likes |

I can't really wait for the first week of August when companies will start rolling out their earnings report, na there wahala go dey. For the past week the market has been driven by Fed and the media report on Corona virus. Yesterday, market was green, Apple announced closure of some of their stores, stocks started falling and finished the day on red. Just stay safe, I don't what happened in march to repeat itself. I lost money for three weeks I didnt have any stock (I sold all). It's really amazing how the Market recovered this fast. A fun facts. If anyone had bought Adobe systems stock in 1986 worth just 500 dollars, in 2020, it will be worth almost 1 million dollars today. Over 200,000% , I was shocked. It's encouraging for those of us that's starting (not saying you should buy Adobe stock o) For the fathers, it's not too early to buy stock for the kids. 1 Like |

I was using Etoro platform but had to withdraw my funds to trading 212 because of convenience of zero trading fee I'm enjoying in trading 212 platform. My major issue with Etoro is their high minimum trade value of $500. For those not comfortable with platform fees e.g trade commission, deposit fee, and withdrawal fees should check out trading 212. |

Anyone else here intend to build a defensive dividend paying portfolio on our NYSE platforms? Or we are all traders here? I'm still studying the market and yet to take a plunge tho Just watching on the sidelines But I'm more biased towards dividend investing to trading. What do our other veterans here think? |
Re: Us Stocks Pick Alert by DexterousOne(m): 11:32pm On Jun 20, 2020 |
gamaliel9: In my Nigerian portfolio I'm more into dividend investment too. I have this bizarre way of doing my trades But it works for me |
Re: Us Stocks Pick Alert by lafuria1(m): 12:25am On Jun 21, 2020 |
DexterousOne: I'm assuming I understand what you are asking, you want to buy stocks from companies that pay dividends in NYSE. Many companies don't pay dividends Tesla doesn't. And those who do, you are going to make more money from increase in value of your stock over time than dividend. I will give an example using Warren buffet shares with apple Apple is the biggest company in the world by value and they pay dividend of 0.8 dollars per share In 2018, buffet shares were worth 36b dollars, in 2019, they were worth 66 billion, profit of 30bn dollars, his annual payout dividend was 784 million dollars for that same year, Compare na, dividends are like extra Money to you. Imagine you bought 1000 shares worth 350k dollars of apple now , your quarterly dividend will be 800 dollars only , you will then get 2400 dollars for the full year One of the highest divided in US is McDonald, 1.25 dollars per share. With So just compare it with NSE, looks like it's different as far dividends is concerned 1 Like |

lafuria1: I'm still studying the market. And I have some finance background By virtue of being a chartered accountant So I understand that the approaches for the NYSE ans NSE listed companies When a profitable company retains most of its earnings The valuations go up As the retainer earnings get to be ploughed back and all that . But Nigeria The business risks are so high hence rapid expansion could lead to disaster I believe that's why they stick to a higher dividend payout At least it makes shareholders happy Assuming say Nigeria dey more balanced And more of this money was reinvested for further growth Our valuations for make sense Thank you for ur answer 1 Like 1 Share |

4Play: This is a flawed argument. If one is interested in buying the index, you might be better off giving your money to the hedge fund manager who will save you the 'stress' of running an account to get the same results. It would be enlightening to the readers if you explained to them how indexes work. If you don't want to do any research, if you can't be asked to do any due diligence, by all means buy the indexes. You don't even need to read any books, just buy the index and expect the overall market returns. Even WB does not buy the index. 1 Like 1 Share |

Re: Us Stocks Pick Alert by 4Play(m): 9:13pm On Jun 21, 2020 |
thesilentone: Hedge funds won't take money from small investors - this is not a thread that caters to the Dangotes or Otedolas. The assertion that retail investors - the people on this thread - struggle over the long term when buying individual stocks is so well known that it is odd we are even debating this. No one should be investing in the stock market without being aware of this. As for Buffett not buying indexes, you seem to miss the point. You buy indexes because you are not Buffett - no one here has his track record no matter how much we congratulate ourselves because of brief successes. By the way, here is Buffet's advice: Buffett is a master of value investing wherein patience, discipline, and risk aversion are the essential ingredients for success. But he acknowledges that individual stock picking is not for everybody. In fact, most average, long-term investors would benefit from a much simpler strategy, he says: investing in low-cost index funds. https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/warren-buffett-recommends-index-funds-for-most-investors I worry, knowing Nigerians' penchant for get-rich-quick schemes, that many will see the stock market as a route to riches, like the BetNaija trend, and invest in an aggressive style. We've already seen the chap from Trove attacked by an investor who lost money and it was interesting the comments he made about the investing style of many, I assume his clients. If we glamourise investing, most people here will suffer in a country where many are not financially buoyant. We have to acknowledge it is tough for retail investors and that the evidence supports this. My view is that novices should avoid stocks, many experts would even say all retail investors should avoid individual stocks but I recognise that you can become pretty good at investing with good education on it. Arguably, part of acquiring an education is by experience in buying stocks but if you go down this route, think of your investment fund as tuition fees and only do it with money you can afford to lose. PS: I have already mentioned in my earlier post what indexes an investor can buy. There are a lot more and I am a bit wary of people wanting to be spoonfed with names of what to buy. It's up to each interested person to investigate what index funds would be appropriate and what is available on the platforms they are using. 11 Likes 1 Share |
