Canadian & Belgian Firms Bid For Calabar Deep Seaport Project by Nobody: 4:18am On Jun 27, 2020
The Cross River State’s Integrated Bakassi Deep Seaport project inched towards reality Wednesday with the opening of bid for its construction.

Port of Antwerp International of Belgium and CPCS Transcom of Canada were the two main bidders.

The event, which took place at the conference room of the State Planning Commission, Calabar had the bidders participating through virtual zoom from Belgium and Canada.

The bid opening was witnessed by the Calabar Chamber of Commerce and Industry represented by Keneth Asim Ituah and the Civil Society Organisations represented by Glory Patrick Etokeren of Budget Transparency and Accountability Network (BTAN).

Speaking at the event, Chairman Steering Committee for the Integrated Bakassi Deep seaport project, Francis Ntamu assured that the project will not suffer abandonment.

According to Ntamu who is also the Chief Economic Adviser to Governor Ben Ayade, the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model of the seaport project has completely eliminated uncertainty about its completion.

“The beauty of PPP is that it takes away the anxiety of whether or not the next administration will want to carry on with the project. Once there are shareholders and stakeholders, it means that the project is already in the market place and this eliminates uncertainty factors. This is what the PPP model seeks to achieve.

“Cross River State Government is not necessarily bringing money to the table for the Bakassi Deep Seaport project. The money will be coming from highly credible international players in the maritime sector. That for us is the key strategy that His Excellency, Professor Ben Ayade foresaw when he came into office in 2015. And that is the way forward because most world economies today are private sector driven,” Ntamu said.

Outlining the economic potentials of Cross River, he said, “Cross River is one of the few states in Nigeria that have the benefit of three economies – blue economy which has to do with the opportunities that come with maritime, the green economy which is the opportunity that comes with our rich forest reserve and the brown field economy e.g Tinapa, International Conference Centre etc. When you fuse these three economies what you have on the table is massive triple posterity.”

Director-General, Cross River Bureau of Public Private Partnership, Odiba Odiba said the PPP model for the seaport project will be on the basis of design, built, operate and transfer.

I will honestly want this deep sea port actualized, it will boast importation within the south-south and south-east region, the price of goods will crash too.

The current Calabar port is too interior , river is shallow and requires frequent dredging . It was refurbished and expanded by military because it was already in existence used for slave /colonial trade. They were reluctant to build a brand new one .
The port was suppose to be dredged 8 months ago,but Buhari decided it's waste of funds and should go towards the deep seaport instead .
The newly appointed Nigerian Port Authority Chairman,Akin Ricketts is even Cross Riverian
The location has been cleared , all compensations paid , all feasibility studies, survey, paper work and approval by FG all done , and there's been minor work going on there . There are firms showing interest in partnership. what more do you need? Those other people talking about deep seaport, have you seen any photos or evidence except propaganda videos and news ? their fantasy seaport site is still swampy and thick forest . yet their propaganda machinery said the seaport is starting operation in 2021. Is that what you want to believe than actual fact and reality ?
I think the governor has good intentions , don't forget Cross river is no longer an oil producing state yet the governor put in all effort to see the seaport become reality. The Calabar deep port ,at 20 metres will be the deepest in West Africa when completed. Akwa ibom deep port is 16.7 metres, Lekki deep port is 16.5 metres . The current Calabar river port is 6 meters , the current Apapa port is 10 meters. The current deepest port in West Africa is Lome Port at 16 Meters.

Akamba101, i wonder why you or anyone would belief that Calabar deep seaport will work! I wonder. I am from the Niger Delta i know what is at play concerning seaports in this country. Donald Duke tried to carry out a similar project but look what have become of Tinapa! Yes the construction, dredging may be done but will the aim be accomplished? Will ships be allowed to berth there? That is the issue. How many Governors from the south south have you seen supporting the project? Oga, the powers that be are contented with the seaports in Lagos!

The problem with you cross riverian with Akwa Ibomite is the problem Nigeria and Ghana has. Finally you have a good news I was even planning to celebrate you people the next thing you started insulting other people (Akwa Ibomite & Lagosian) calling their own port a propaganda. Everything you owned in that state was built and is owned by Akwa Ibom people .. Akwa Ibom colonize you guys ...your first both military and Civilian governors were both from.Akwa Ibom., Your Airport was built by an akwa Ibom man , your seaport tho built by Federal Government was supervised by Akwa Ibom administration, your University of Calabar was built by an akwa Ibomite ... your former Governor Donald Duke was even an Akwa Ibom yet you keep insulting us when we support you people..Don't worry we will see which port will come on spot light btw Lekki , Ibom port and your bakassi port. please send me the source that told you that your port is 20meters deep. Nonsense .

You have guilty conscience about the word "propaganda machinery". Can you prove my assertions wrong with facts ? You have just typed a lot without making sense . Go back and reread what you just wrote and see if it makes sense to you. maybe you missed your medication.

When Efiks where building Kingdoms you were running around naked on trees. You will never reach Efiks even if you build the tallest skyscraper and longest flyover to cure your inferiority complex . Your dialect sounds like noise compared to Efik. Efik Culture is the face of efik-ibibio ,your names like Bassey,Etim,Edem,Ekanem,Inyang,Archibong,Edet,Effiong are all Efiks that you copy. Afang, edikaikong are all Efik food that you copy. Everywhere you go they call you Calabar ,not Uyo. In fact akwa ibomites destroyed the name Calabar . 90 percent of all the criminals and prostitutes in Calabar and port harcourt are from Akwa ibom. Ekaette and Akpan are not Efik names. Even now that Akpabio help gave Uyo facelift you still run to Calabar,Port harcourt and Lagos.

Efiks and akwa ibom where in one state and we Efik-ibibios even banded against Northern cross riverians , so what are you talking about ? Annang man was rigged in as governor by ana Oron man ,Eket man was rigged in as governor by Efik man . Efik man was governor of eastern region. Donald Duke is Efik. There's agreement for governorship rotation and the next cross river governor from will be Efik.
Who did you expect to build the UJ stadium other than the governor Esuene ? Is Akpabio who built stadium ,roads and hospital at Uyo an ibibio man? It is foolish to think Efiks have ill will towards Akwa ibomites. Efiks have always had good will towards Akwa ibomites . If Efik did not agree ,no state would have been created. And there are still many akwa ibomites living and working in Calabar. Can you say the same for Akwa ibom? but Akwa ibomites have always been ungrateful .We know that thief Akpabio bribed the judge to cede the oil wells to Akwa ibom and he refused to work on Calabar Itu Road so as to kill traffic to Calabar.
I am not opposed to seaport at Akwa ibom , it's all good for the region. if there can be two or three seaports at Lagos then why not on akwacross side. Stop your wicked and ungrateful mentality.
And as for the ikot offiong and oku iboku clash, it's a communal fight between brothers that has existed even before state creation, it has nothing to do with akwa ibom/cross river. and as for the judge not being appointed, it is simple political logic with regard to pending inter state legal issues and has nothing to do with efik hate ibibio or anything. The Obong of Calabar recommended two akwa ibomites (Esin -Oron and Bassey-Eket) to be appointed as commissioners , but now your wicked and ungrateful akwa ibom mind is saying you colonize or taking over .

Let what this sink in to your head, am sure deep into your blood you have Akwa Ibom DNA fool, continue behaving like a fool while we wait and see what your audio govenor will accomplish.
