Hello nairalanders, I think the application of BODMAS in solving mathematical problem is quite confusing, especially in our mathematics textbook, as not all example given follows the rule, hence, you'll sometimes solve a problem, thinking you have arrived at the answer, as you follow the rule but will be surprised that the textbook prove otherwise, which leads to more confusion.

The picture below, describes two mathematical problem, one follows the BODMAS rule,(mine), the other, not (textbook's), and not surprisingly, we arrived at different answer, yet it was the textbook that recommend the use of BODMAS.

What do you think, where is the application of this formula it's origin, and should we stick to it or discard it?

BODMAS means

B = Bracket

O = Order

D = Division

M = Multiplication

A = Addition

S = Subtraction.


O is not "of" but order.

If I say solve : 3 + 6 x 2 / 3 + 5²


You start with the order which is 5²



(73 - 45 + 18)/ 12

This is where your mistake started.


This is the solution: (73 + 18 - 45)/ 12 using BODMAS

73 and 18 have the + sign, so they come together and add eachother, then the -45 is next.

(91 - 45 )/ 12

46/12 = 23/6 = 3 _5/6
