Some people still don’t know what the difference between a Software Engineer and a programmer is. |

thebigkendo: Baba, no be all NGOs hold am stand o! The CBOs/CSOs are mostly SSRs and can't afford to pay you above 100k due to budget constraints. However, they are the perfect learning and proving grounds, they usually have diverse thematic focus - that means you end up learning about programming that relates to Livelihoods, Cash Based Initiatives, Health, Education, WASH, TB, HIV, OVC, Camp Management, SGBV, Justice and Rights etc. The INGOs and SRs (Sub Recipients) are usually focused on one programming need at a time and will require people with proficient skills in that regard, also they can pay the fat salaries because they receive funding from institutional donors and can afford a huge wage bill. You can't work for any of them without the prerequisite experience or the equivalent in connections. Downside: projects are contract based. You're always on the lookout for the next big job, I've worked in Maiduguri as recently as 2 years ago, Yola as recently as 15 months ago. My last job contract was Takum/Gembu Taraba ended in November, last year. Secured the bag for another starting next year January. So, I'm currently unemployed but living off the fruits of my earlier labor. And yes, engineers can get work but you must be prepared to look at the North East for opportunities. |

Someone said Indian has 1billion coders yet many of them won't let me rest. I have resorted to blocking most of them. Programming really pays but you have to work for it. It won't come easy. 1 Like |

philip0906: Yeah but not always true. Some devs are not really bothered about the money. I used to commute 7hrs a day for a 50k job around Jan - Mar. I took the job because I wanted to meet new people and luckily for me, I met great personalities there. 1 Like |

Raustin:Yes it did. That was when I was marketing though. I am learning to code so I don't apply to jobs anymore. Changed my profile to that of a full stack developer and I have gotten Invites to apply to jobs. Something that didn't even happen as a marketer. Upwork works but you have to treat it like real life not applying to 5 jobs not getting any and coming and abusing the site. 1 Like |

benjijosh:Which devs are not bothered about money? Lemao... That devs are well paid, is not a function of choice but skill set, experience and the premium placed on their skills by market forces (average earnings in the industry, demand and supply of programmers), which in turn means they'll always command good wages. If you decided to get a job of 50k, it had nothing to do with the above as you most likely didn't fit into the criteria to earn more than 50k. |
Re: Is A Programmer's Job Unstable? by Nobody: 11:24am On Jun 28, 2020 |
Any programmer earning less than 100k is not a serious person. Even freelancing alone can generate that monthly comfortably, a good WordPress guy can't go a month without a single job worth like 30k so what are you saying. |

You have to be good with a broad skill set, or have a rare specialization. However, many companies simply don't want to pay a good salary, so that's debatable. One of the reasons coding is so promoted is companies want to saturate the market and pay little to nothing. They would also rather pay people who barely know what they're doing (Indians) scraps than pay qualified people. The "shortages" (developers, nurses, engineers, doctors) they speak of is just a lie for "we don't want to pay you." |
