However, it is obvious that Germany need more working class immigrants especially in those unregulated field to contribute to the economy through payment of tax and social securities. Germany doesn't not run a pension scheme like Nigeria where pension fund is kept aside in a safe, they run a system where the current working populace pay those who have retired and the flow continues like that. As a student you contribute almost nothing to the economy, it's even worse when you keep changing schools and didnt finish the master on time.

In as much as you want to condemn the act, note that the system permit it and in fact has a very smooth path to change your residence status. A friend confirmed that from one of the staff at the Munich foreign office.

So, doing stuff that is totally permitted by the immigration law shouldn't be seen as bad.

You probably cannot build a fully functional distributed system on your own or provision networking components remotely which are the things I worked on before even leaving Nigeria.

You never cease to amaze me. I just advice you what to do. Why would I waste my time quoting any law to you when you're ignorantly claiming right. Again, go and read the immigration law again and ask German lawyers to help you out with it because you clearly dont understand a thing.

According to the German law, you CANNOT convert a study visa into a work visa without completing your studies and obtaining a degree. If you come as a student, you can only work on the approved student working hours of 120 half days or 240 full days a year.
You also cannot gain full time employment in any company, neither can you be self employed or a freelancer.

After graduation, you get 18 months permit to find a job and when you get one, only then can you change your student status to a work status.

However, there are “exceptions”. These exceptions are not part of the law and are only considered “special cases” as grants. In the case that the student has a “very special” skill that is required and has attracted employment with a good salary, the Employment office can allow for a change of residence title. Again, this is NOT a law, it is a special, restricted permission.

You would have to be very exclusive to get this opportunity and have employment waiting for you. You would also have to be approved by the Foreigners and Employment office after certain requirements which they will give you. This applies to students, refugees and asylum seekers that were rejected (It is a way to escape deportation).

For you Nigerians reading this and thinking you’re part of the “exclusive”, you may want to look at your qualification and think again. If you’re coming to study, don’t even think about dropping out. You will lose your health insurance, your student status and face deportation. In the smartest case, you may end up staying illegally and doing menial jobs until they find you and throw you out.

Complete your studies, no matter how long it takes or how many times you jump from one University to another, and get a job with your degree.

One of the open source projects I am being paid for right now is run by a senior software solutions architect at a very famous multinational in Germany. The only reason I got the job is because of my education and skills and because he finished his masters from my school 2 years ago. And this guy was already a highly skilled Eclipse framework developer with years of skills and commitment under his belt. If you had had to develop on Eclipse there's no way you won't have heard of the guy. When I asked him why he felt the need to complete a master degree in my school, considering what I already know about him, he told me he needed it to further his career. Lol. That's a German citizen in Germany with years of experience. There are a few in my other departments in my school working and doing their masters too. They are all also IT guys.

To give another example, I have built and commited to the Flutter SDK repository a few times. One of the guys that actually started the Flutter community was on Twitter begging for jobs a few weeks ago. This is a guy with years of experience and commits under his name. He still couldn't get someone to hire him. So he had to cry out. That's because he was still a mobile developer while most of his mates had transitioned into management by studying and certificates mostly MBAs.

Certificates are one of the first things they will look out for in your CV. It shows commitment and time investment. It helps you get your foot in the door for interviews and demonstrates that at least you are likely to have some of the skills you claim to have. In IT today AWS certification counts a lot. People pay money to have it. If it's as unimportant as you claim then it won't be so popular. Portfolios are also good. But nobody has argued against having portfolios here. I have one too. I am talking about long term career mobility.

I usually don't comment on German study threads and I probably won't comment again for a long while but something brought me here and I feel someone needs to hear this.

Wrong, graduated last year ( studied an Agriculture course) just before I finished, I got a job in a fintech company in lekki, after all the technical questions, asking about my experience and projects I have worked on, they asked about my course of study, they laughed when I told them, there were people that studied computer science that came for the interview but they picked me why ? Because they knew for sure I would get the job done. I left the job last November, after I got a remote job in Germany and moved to ibadan.

Certificates are good, but if you are a software developer, you should focus more on improving yourself than getting certificates, I'm only saying this because some people might think once they have certificates they are fine, Wrong, the only people who will be wow'ed by your certificates are those that are not into IT, they can't ask you coding questions or measure the impact you made on projects so when you show them certificates they are happy. One of my friend got a Job in Germany, housing and everything was already sorted but he got denied visa , why ? Consular asked for certificate. So if you want to wow "people" or you want to make yourself bigger than you are to "people" ( branding) have certificates. One thing is having certificate another thing is knowing how to do the job. Even if you happen to get the job with your certificates can you do the job ? That's another question.

I forgot to add, early last year while I was waiting to graduate, I did a final year project for someone that studied Computer Science & Information Systems in Norwich University. At first he told me it was his assignment and he can't do it because of work, it was later he told me it was his project, I wrote all the chapters of the project and built the web application. He couldn't build a CRM application but he has a certificate. (According to him he is a first class student, not sure what it's called there). Till today he still sends me code to help him fix.

Even while still in Nigeria, I assisted my friend with almost 60% of his master's thesis by reason of my exposure in the industry... Wait where do you guys get this idea that hackers don't have a university degree? From Hollywood? LMAO.

Most cyber security experts working anywhere that matters have higher degrees. For you to even begin to understand certain exploits mean you have to have been exposed to the computer architecture and other stuff. That's why these big companies fund Professors and other people to do research into these things and protect their investment. Most of the people you guys call hackers in Nigeria are just guys that go online to get info about exploits because there are lots of that online and then replicate them. There are actually very very few original hackers outthere in Nigeria. For every 1 uneducated success story there are 30 otherwise.

And like you said, there are geniuses that don't need education for sure. But trust me, most of these boastful Nigerians that are only good in web design aren't the stuff of genius. Most of them don't even have the foggiest idea about endianess and how it applies to programming. I don't blame them. I blame the Nigerian system that churns out graduates without any project experience and no meaningful exposure and that's why a CS graduate in Nigeria can be giving his final project to an Agric student to do. Thats the height of unseriousness. Which is why most web guys in Nigeria now think they are better than a CS degree. Even Andela was smart enough to know the difference that for long they kept calling their employees technicians.

I am currently working on an open source project in Automotive software engineering. This is where you deal with hard real-time systems where the effectiveness of the scheduling algorithm you choose matters a lot to performance and response of the systems. You also have to consider deadlocks and the best way to avoid race conditions in those circumstances. These are hard problems. A friend of mine got a job in April from a conference we attended in March in another European country. He is working in Edge Computing which is a topic we had done in school the semester before and built projects on it. The kind of things he is doing with computer networking will make you appreciate why computer science is mathematics heavy. Who do you think will be paid better tomorrow by telecoms equipment manufacturers or telecoms companies? Him or a guy that designs website? Who do you think is likely to become CTO in a great company? Who is likely to have job satisfaction that comes with career mobility?

I was working with a Portuguese company part time using Flutter and I can't forget because that's what made me finally decide to leave Nigeria and get a master's degree abroad. This was when Flutter was still in alpha. The kind of little useful tidbits of knowledge these guys had acquired just from what they were taught in school made me realise I was getting too comfortable being considered skilled among willful mediocres. And in the first semester of masters alone I realised the use and need for many things I had been taking for granted in programming languages.

You reading this, if you get an opportunity to study in a good system, take the knowledge seriously and improve yourself. Trust me it will usually pay off in a few years.

And to those that think web design is the greatest form of computer science, keep being a paragon of the Dunning-Kruger Effect.
