ajebuter: How old are you dear? Back then there was nothing like the internet and Nigerian parents totally didn't sit their kids down and talk to them about the birds and bees. Get my drift? That meant that a lot of us learned about sex and love making from books. Harold Robbins' books were adult as sin and very detailed in the raunchy stuff. Jackie Collins not so much. I learned more about birds and bees from Robbins, I guess the opposite was true for you. 1 Like |

ajebuter:I liked them years ago. But looking back, they are simplistic. My favorites are Guy de Maupassant, Gustave Flaubert, Tonie Morrison, Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Bronte sisters, Alexandre Dumas, Charles Dickens, Wolfgang von Goethe, Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, W. B. Yeats, Jonathan Swift and Guenter Grass. Irish writers are just too good. |

Reddington: If you think the grand master of mystery is Dan Brown, then you haven't heard of Lawrence Block. He is actually called "The grand master of Mystery". A title given to him by the American Mystery writers association. He has two Mystery series with over 13 books per series. Here are the Series 1. The Burglar Series (Benard Rhodenbarr) 2. The Matthew Scudder Series. 2 Likes 1 Share |

I don't have a favorite author presently I am still exploring.I read my first Dan Brown novel Angels and Demons in SS1.Since then I have been hooked,I read Origin and Digital fortress this year and they are excellent.I love thriller and mystery novels a lot but these days I prefer African novels,I read my first Ngugi Wa'thiongo's novel weep not child in Jss2,I read a river between in SS2.Chimamanda is an author I admire I love her works and I read purple hibiscus over and over again in Js2 lol,I have read Americanah,Half of a yellow sun and The things around her neck.Growing up, when I was in primary school I read a lot of Enid Blyton and I still enjoy some of her works even though I am no longer a child. The reading culture in Nigeria is really bad, many young people are only interested in Instagram and Twitter.I hope to read the works of Dostoevsky when I get the opportunity to.I Know I have written an epistle lol, biko, emabinu, sorry I didn't mean to.I just wanted to express myself.I will really appreciate if someone could be kind enough to suggest some great African writers and their works. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Sirheny007: Yet to read Block's work. Just like most people commenting, my assessment was limited to authors I've read. I hope to try Lawrence Block someday. But currently it's Dan Brown for me. If truly, Block is globally recognised as the daddy of mystery as you suggested, then I'm sure Dan Brown would be a very close second.. He's magnificent at mysteries. 1 Like |

Prof Oluwole Akinwande Babatunde Soyinka, Kongi the god of literature. His constant employment of heavy verbiage is one of the reasons why I like him so much. I guess that explains why Larrysun is my favorite Nairaland writer of all time. others are; William Shakespeare Chinua Achebe Bernard Shaw Chimamanda Adichie |

Reddington: I have read all Dan Brown's work. He's a great one. He is also on my own list. I just wanted to clear up an impression when you described Dan Brown as the grandfather of Mystery. I wanted you to know that "The grandmaster of mystery" is actually a "title" given to Lawrence Block by the American Mystery writers association. 2 Likes |

badaru911: Because you mentioned Robert Jordan, I will check the other books listed. Just curious. Why didn’t you mention Brandon Sanderson as well? I think he did a great job finishing the WOT series and has written superb personal works too. There’s a new young gifted writer I was lucky to stumble upon recently: Evan Winter. He wrote “The Rage or Dragons”. The pace is unbelievable. Other authors I like are Patrick Rothfuss, George R.R. Martin, Tad Williams, Joe Abercrombie, Michael Crichton, Nelson DeMille, Jeffery Archer, Frank Peretti, C. S. Lewis, Jim Butcher, Glen Cook, Steven Erikson, George Johnston. For classics: Charles Dickens, Thomas Hardy, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Alexandre Dumas. African Writers: Chinua Achebe, Cyprian Ekwensi, Chimamanda Adichie, Mongo Beti, Camara Laye, Peter Abrahams. 1 Like |

Sirheny007:I understand bro. Actually I wasn't referring to the title you had in mind. It was just a plain comment devoid of any associational award. Pleased to know tho that there is actually an association of that sort with such title. Learning they say is a continuous process. 1 Like 1 Share |
