Lol the chain has 6 stores

Economic realities mixed with a toxic cocktail of internal and external mismanagement have brought Kenya’s largest retailers to their knees. This questions assumptions around the size and potential of the African market, and how we evaluate competitive performance and management in such a complex environment.

Nakumatt, with over 60 stores across the region and annual revenues of $700 million, is by far the largest and most controversial of the surprising collapse.

Sorry bro. We dont shop in Nandos, Steers, Shoprite or at Furniture palace. We also wont drink castle beer. We have learned how to intentionally avoid South African products on a national scale. You can thank the beer wars between EABL and SA breweries for this predicament.

Shoprite Kenya has similar number of stores and yet 2yrs later they are running back having bite the dust. In meantime, Carrefour that came around the same time are thriving.

Nakumatt had 65 stores including in Tanzania, Rwanda, and Uganda.

But we now have 3 Kenya stores with 60 stores (Tuksy, Naivas, Quickmatt) and many more with a small number of stores.

Yes nothing compared to South Africa - but certainly the most developed retail market outside South Africa in Sub Sahara.

French Retailer CarreFour are minting money. South African companies just don't do their homework.

While as always South African having lost their shirt - run back - claiming Kenya has no middle class for them smiley - what can you say when you've burnt lot of rand.

Here is the French Carrefour - minting serious money. Kenya companies are expanding furiously..

The retailer said since launching in Kenya four years ago, the franchise of the French hypermarket chain had grown faster than expected, attracting a strong clientele base among the country’s expanding middle class.

Carrefour Kenya has emerged as one of the major players in the local retail market, having launched operations in 2016 at The Hub in Karen, Nairobi

French retail chain Carrefour recorded sales worth Sh18.7 billion from its Kenyan outlets last year, the company has disclosed in its annual financial report.

Majid Al Futtaim, the exclusive holder of Carrefour’s franchise in Kenya, announced the 28 percent jump in sales from Sh14.6 billion recorded in 2018 indicating that its aggressive expansion bid across major towns in Kenya was paying off.

The retailer said since launching in Kenya four years ago, the franchise of the French hypermarket chain had grown faster than expected, attracting a strong clientele base among the country’s expanding middle class.

Yes, there is almost universal hatred for anything south African in Kenya. You could be right. EABL went really brutal about SABMiller - and use patriotism to kick them out. I blame Kenya hatred for anything South African and Boer's gungho attitude - they jet in and want to run things without understanding the local environment.

I believe if they hired Kenyans - as their public face - they would have some success.

Nakumatt grew from a single store to a big conglomerate right in Kenya. The owners differed. The drug dealer Harun Mwau withdrew his capital and the company fell down due to corporate governance issues.

Tusky is also about to go down due to the same corporate governance issues...directors looting.

The genesis of hatred of South African brands can be traced to brutal beer wars btw EABL and South Africa's SABMiller in 1990s.

Many years ago our local brewer, East African Breweries Limited (EABL), was facing a major new threat. Castle, a huge brand owned by South African Breweries, had announced its entry into our local market. It was coming in with big money, a big plant and big plans.

One of the key strategic decisions made in response by EABL was simple: fly the flag. Cloak local beers in patriotism to see off the usurper.

It worked. Kenya’s Tusker brand was clothed in the colours of the flag. A series of adverts focusing on national identity exhorted Kenyans to support their own. Other responses were also deployed, but the patriotic positioning was key. Castle had only limited success in the Kenyan market, and eventually scaled down its plans and arranged an amicable exit.

chicken plays a comparatively small role in the Kenyan economy—responsible for only about 6.1 percent of Kenyan livestock GDP

So far Nandos is making huge profits in kenya, plans of expanding

They can come - rocomamas, spurs - and name them - but if they keep to vertical market - they may thrive - but they cannot expand much horizontal - thanks to branding issues.

SABMiller grew from its original South African base into a global company with operations in both developed markets and emerging economies such as Eastern Europe, China and India. It is one of the world's largest brewers, with brewing interests and distribution agreements across six continents.

Exited kenya,,, while being 2nd largest brewer no big deal

After the merger between Anheuser Busch Inbev and SABMiller, the new Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV company owns over 200 beer brands including Budweiser and Bud Light, Corona, Stella Artois, Beck's, Leffe, Hoegaarden, Skol, Brahma, Antarctica, Quilmes, Victoria, Modelo Especial, Michelob Ultra, Harbin, Sedrin, Klinskoye, Sibirskaya Korona, Chernigivske, Cass and Jupiler. Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV also owns a soft drinks business that has bottling contracts with PepsiCo through its subsidiary, AmBev

The question - ShopRite came - like the rest - and have beaten the dust again. Now Kenya retail might not be in South Africa level - but it's 2nd best in Sub-Sahara Africa.
