Austine1213: Sorry bro. We dont shop in Nandos, Steers, Shoprite or at Furniture palace. We also wont drink castle beer. We have learned how to intentionally avoid South African products on a national scale. You can thank the beer wars between EABL and SA breweries for this predicament. |

Shoprite Kenya has similar number of stores and yet 2yrs later they are running back having bite the dust. In meantime, Carrefour that came around the same time are thriving. Nakumatt had 65 stores including in Tanzania, Rwanda, and Uganda. But we now have 3 Kenya stores with 60 stores (Tuksy, Naivas, Quickmatt) and many more with a small number of stores. Yes nothing compared to South Africa - but certainly the most developed retail market outside South Africa in Sub Sahara. Austine1213: |

Yes, there is almost universal hatred for anything south African in Kenya. You could be right. EABL went really brutal about SABMiller - and use patriotism to kick them out. I blame Kenya hatred for anything South African and Boer's gungho attitude - they jet in and want to run things without understanding the local environment. I believe if they hired Kenyans - as their public face - they would have some success. gallivant: |

There is a lot of money - that is why they came in the first place - and they had wanted to buy Nakumatt with Massmart. 4-6 carrerfour stores are crossing 200M dollars in sales. Kenya local stores are thriving. Equity funds are investing in them. Austine1213: 1 Like |

Nakumatt grew from a single store to a big conglomerate right in Kenya. The owners differed. The drug dealer Harun Mwau withdrew his capital and the company fell down due to corporate governance issues. Tusky is also about to go down due to the same corporate governance issues...directors looting. Austine1213: |

The genesis of hatred of South African brands can be traced to brutal beer wars btw EABL and South Africa's SABMiller in 1990s. Many years ago our local brewer, East African Breweries Limited (EABL), was facing a major new threat. Castle, a huge brand owned by South African Breweries, had announced its entry into our local market. It was coming in with big money, a big plant and big plans. One of the key strategic decisions made in response by EABL was simple: fly the flag. Cloak local beers in patriotism to see off the usurper. It worked. Kenya’s Tusker brand was clothed in the colours of the flag. A series of adverts focusing on national identity exhorted Kenyans to support their own. Other responses were also deployed, but the patriotic positioning was key. Castle had only limited success in the Kenyan market, and eventually scaled down its plans and arranged an amicable exit. 1 Like |

They can come - rocomamas, spurs - and name them - but if they keep to vertical market - they may thrive - but they cannot expand much horizontal - thanks to branding issues. Abohboy: |

rvp20182: SABMiller grew from its original South African base into a global company with operations in both developed markets and emerging economies such as Eastern Europe, China and India. It is one of the world's largest brewers, with brewing interests and distribution agreements across six continents. The question - ShopRite came - like the rest - and have beaten the dust again. Now Kenya retail might not be in South Africa level - but it's 2nd best in Sub-Sahara Africa. Austine1213: |
