The genesis of hatred of South African brands can be traced to brutal beer wars btw EABL and South Africa's SABMiller in 1990s.

Many years ago our local brewer, East African Breweries Limited (EABL), was facing a major new threat. Castle, a huge brand owned by South African Breweries, had announced its entry into our local market. It was coming in with big money, a big plant and big plans.

One of the key strategic decisions made in response by EABL was simple: fly the flag. Cloak local beers in patriotism to see off the usurper.

It worked. Kenya’s Tusker brand was clothed in the colours of the flag. A series of adverts focusing on national identity exhorted Kenyans to support their own. Other responses were also deployed, but the patriotic positioning was key. Castle had only limited success in the Kenyan market, and eventually scaled down its plans and arranged an amicable exit.
Patriotism lol

We in SA you fail cos you not good enough not because you we use patriotism, when you not good we reject you if you good we accept you

It's simple as that. No need for manipulation lol

Just not in Kenya or East Africa. EABL kick arse in the region - Kenya, TZ, Uganda, and Rwanda. South Africa has big conglomerate but we don't fear them - we compete with them and send them back - minus their shirts.
Austine1213:

SABMiller grew from its original South African base into a global company with operations in both developed markets and emerging economies such as Eastern Europe, China and India. It is one of the world's largest brewers, with brewing interests and distribution agreements across six continents.

Exited kenya,,, while being 2nd largest brewer no big deal

After the merger between Anheuser Busch Inbev and SABMiller, the new Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV company owns over 200 beer brands including Budweiser and Bud Light, Corona, Stella Artois, Beck's, Leffe, Hoegaarden, Skol, Brahma, Antarctica, Quilmes, Victoria, Modelo Especial, Michelob Ultra, Harbin, Sedrin, Klinskoye, Sibirskaya Korona, Chernigivske, Cass and Jupiler. Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV also owns a soft drinks business that has bottling contracts with PepsiCo through its subsidiary, AmBev

The question - ShopRite came - like the rest - and have beaten the dust again. Now Kenya retail might not be in South Africa level - but it's 2nd best in Sub-Sahara Africa.

What's your question?
Re: Kenya Is Ahead of Nigeria In All Aspect (Facts Don't Lie) by rvp20182: 11:29am On Jun 30, 2020
If Chinese or Indian or US companies were to descend on your market like South Africa firms did in Africa post apartheid - you gotta throw everything at them. Otherwise, you'd have done to us what you have done to the rest of Africa - own us. If you owned our retail sector - you'd have started to import south African eggs smiley and manufactured goods. But I am happy ShopRite has lost hope and is going back with huge losses.

That beer war gave Kenyans and Kenya corporate the belief to take on the bigger south African firms coming with lots of rands.

Why do South Africa companies insist on coming to Kenya - when there is enough evidence since 1990s - that they cannot hack it? Why not go to Nigeria smiley or Ghana.

Anyway, we are coming from you - we are circling around Zambia - Malawi- Mozambique.

SA got more hold in east africa

Nile Special – Uganda
Owned by SABMiller but brewed in the birthplace of the Nile River in Jinja, Uganda

When the two brewers reached a settlement in which they divided the beer market in East Africa among themselves. Castle agreed to exit Kenya, and EABL decided to leave the Tanzanian market to the SABMiller subsidiary.

Nakumatt had 65 stores including in Tanzania, Rwanda, and Uganda.

But we now have 3 Kenya stores with 60 stores (Tuksy, Naivas, Quickmatt) and many more with a small number of stores.

Yes nothing compared to South Africa - but certainly the most developed retail market outside South Africa in Sub Sahara.

Your country is too fake, u fake figures to suite ur egos, some few years back, Nakumat Uchummu and Kenya airways were reporting false profits but as time goes by , the truth then begin to reveal ,all your major supermarkets chain’s creditors voted to liquidate the lose making supermarkets, same will soon happen to your banks.

We are the only country in Africa to send back South African companies through competition. A country appealing for patriotism is fair competition. You can appeal for better quality.

What Tanzania does to Kenya is abhorrent - because they use all underhand methods including arresting Kenyans on flimsy reasons, denying them work permits and enacting forex controls. And we are supposed to be in East Africa - and speak the same language. They even run to SADC and would prefer South African companies than Kenya.

Kenya you're free to come, can bring and take rands anytime, and we will stick to the international rules, but rest assured the brutal competition will send you back home, minus the shirt.

Only South African are complaining. It's either brutal competition or they are just stupid - and sign anything without due diligence. Tiger Brands came and bought Haco Industries - only to discover lots of cooking of books - they lost their shirt - the previous owner bought back his company and Tiger brands is now out of Kenya before it could say Jambo.

Shoprite have signed 10yr deal smiley and will have to pay the rent - before they go back - shirtless.

I pity Nigerian banks rushing to kenya smiley Shirts you will leave. But I see they are becoming smarter and hiring Kenyans - rather than bringing Nigerians smiley. They first got conned and got sold overvalued banks - and now they need to turn profitable - or well cut their losses.

We dominate East Africa - Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, South Sudan - Eastern Congo, have some key presence in Ethiopia and Somalia. And we have some play in Zambia and Mozambique.

Our next playground is Congo DRC. Our first real french and central African foray. If we succeed in DRC - we will take over Central Africa.

If Ethiopia opens up - we could stay there for some time.

Eventually, we want to go to Nigeria in big-time.

Our only problem is envious Tanzania.
