I might probably regret making this post anyway.

The 21st Century Nigerian Church is now just a corporate organisation. It's no longer about soul winning but about membership growth. Christianity is the most lucrative business in Africa, and the better the branding the more appealing it is to people.

There is a brutish dog-eat-dog competition going on out there. Look at the rapid, senseless proliferation of branches in every district you go. Look at the desperate hunt for members.

What's the gospel? Preaching about Jesus to the people who have not been saved, and delivering souls to God. Yeah?

So why then do churches send out people to fiercely poach members of other churches? Like, it is no longer enough that you have accepted Jesus into your life. Neeeh. The evangelists literally try to convince you that your Jesus is not as Jesus as theirs. That their church is more Christian than yours. It doesn't matter if you're already saved. What matters is that you have to attend their church specifically. There are about a hundred million Christians in Nigeria ready to part with their money in the form of tithes and offerings and kingdom investments.

The church is a corporate organisation and Christians are the target customers.

Have you realised how fiercely evangelism has become very recently? It is tagged "soul winning", which technically means convincing other Christians to come to your own church. For example, members of the assembly are almost coerced into bringing at least two 'souls' to church. The church sometimes set a target, that by July this year our numbers will increase from 2000 to 4000. More people brought to the church, more revenue for the church. Simple.

The church is a corporate organisation, and the members are the marketers. 100 million of Christians to be dragged.

Pastors are the branch managers. They are the ones to use their skills to motivate evangelism. The more charismatic they are the better for business. Pastors who are able to increase the population of a local assembly are rewarded with a "promotion" to a higher assembly with a bigger salary scheme. There is a financial target of money a local church has to remit to the headquarters. Therefore pastors are motivated to press as hard as they can to get members.

This is why in recent times new generation churches have put so much effort into appealing to new members. The 'cooler' a church appears, the more numbers it attracts. That's why new generation churches put a lot of effort into branding, designs, music and "Christian pop culture."

Another promo method churches use to swell their population is the testimonies. Have you heard those testimonies? Bogus as Bleep. God is blessing people financially yo. The most pressing problem of Nigeria is financial insecurity. A church that promises a divine economic solution is easily more attractive to attend. That's why these churches solely focus on prosperity prophecies and testimonies. The God of the new generation churches is a benevolent God who serves money like it's Christmas.

Branding is also an important tool for the work. This is why churches like COZA and the rest thrive: Branding.

You're a 21st Century Nigerian. You see a church that has a world class stage design, an incredible musical set, a fantastic social environment for hookups, a pastor with an incredible fashion sense, members who ooze of glamour. Bleep spirituality, fam. Frankly people are sick of all those preachings on morality and spirituality. People just want to groove.

New worshippers are pampered in bigger churches with souvenirs that include food and drinks and other gifts. This is to encourage their continuous patronage. There's a reason churches now have free WiFi services, and it is not for connecting with the Holy Spirit. Making the most beautiful girls in the church ushers is a conscious, deliberate thing. Making the wealthiest people in the church elders is a deliberate thing.

So, are you looking for a good business prospect that is capable of surviving any economy? Get yourself a church, make sure to be charismatic, and be 21st Century as hell. Key into pop culture. Don't forget to find a way to incorporate gospel soapy dance into your praise and worship sessions.

Christian reality TV show, wonder why no one has thought about that yet.

Churches have been business centres right from the days of the Roman Catholics. It is a sure cashout for pastors, pays them more than bet9ja pays its owners.
