The Yarmolenko guy didn't even check his own run at all, he was just sprinting down at full pace, Antonio took about three to four touches before releasing the pass, Rudiger had all the time in the world to assess the situation but he was bent on a footrace. He killed himself but c'est la vie.

He could not set a dependable offside trap because he was so deep in his half and he is not the smartest of players naturally.

The time to set the trap was immediately Antonio got the ball. He shoulde have been a bit closer to him and positioned to cut off a pass to Yarmolenko.
That way you can either block the pass or step up while Antonio struggles to control the ball thereby placing Yarmolenko in an offside postion.

Instead he was far away from Antonio, in no position to block a pass and in no position to set an offside trap for Yarmolenko. He is a reactive rather than proactive defender.

If you pause this video at 2 min 18 secs when Christensen was battling Antonio, that is when Rudiger shoulder have been at the half way line a few yards behind is partner to pick up loose balls or loose runners.

Instead he dropped off like an airline stock during COVID crisis. He also drifted too much to the right cos he wasn't aware of Yarmolenko's run on time. If he was better positioned he would have nipped that move in the bud. That is not to absolve other ball watchers like Alonso, Christensen of their share of the blame.

Damian was also good in serie a, he made team of the season twice consecutively before coming to epl, but not all man utd fans are impresssed with what he has done in manchester. May be my expectation of him was too high, but there are stuff you look for in a world-class defender, that i cant find in rudiger. A 40m central defender should be very firm on the ground, buzzing with confidence. We need players who can compete with the bests in europe. If we are spending 40m on this guy, then we are idiots.
