The certificate in itself is worthless. but companies take it serious, almost more serious than the real certificate you struggled four years for and its really hard to get a job without one 4 Likes |

dre_d1: Normally I would just pass by, but you deserve some commendation. The average nairalander would have responded to ednut1 very hotly, but here you have displayed rare composure and civility. So as to stay on topic, about the issue of having or not having an NYSC discharge certificate, to my knowledge, all Nigerian tertiary institution graduates are automatically mobilized for NYSC. I would assume part time students are mobilized as well. If not, then some provision has probably been made for them. So I don't understand why / how your friend has a problem. Regards 2 Likes |

yamakuza: Not so. There is actually a law against companies employing anybody who did not do NYSC. The law or the scheme in itself is not an issue, but . . . well, everything in Nigeria seems to have gone to the dogs, NYSC included. @OP, why not just chin up and do the NYSC thing. It's just a year, and you can always pay to be posted wherever you want. So kini big deal? ![]() 1 Like 1 Share |

Well I just wanted to read and just pass on this but I just couldn't help but contribute. Well yes some companies make NYSC a priority but some companies just interview you and if you prove your ability, with God on your side, you will get the job. Using myself as an example, I studied in one of the most notorious school for part time studies in Lagos, (i don't want to call the name) after spending 7yrs for a 4Yrs Direct entry part-time programme, I eventually finished and graduate, armed with only my statement of result, I hit the labour market, I must have sent over 700 applications and CV combined (and this is not an exaggeration) eventually a company (i'll keep the name for security sake) called me for a test, out of 3,000 people that took the test, I scored the 6th highest and I was called for an IT test, in the IT test, I scored the highest, then I was called for an interview. Armed with only my "statement of result" I went for the interview, on getting there, the panel was huge with 8 stern looking people, i passed around my resume and all the normal stuffs, the interview was gruesome, so many questions, demonstrations, sitting, standing and sweating. Just when i thought it had ended, someone brought up and observation about my results, He said I have only a statement of result and there was no NYSC discharge letter or exemption, It must have been God oh, make i no make mouth, see a huge arguement, someone said he is good someone said he is not, then I was excused, with prayers oh, I was called to resume for the job like 3months later, thats it me with statement of result alone got the job, well thats what it is, 3years down the line, another american company put up vacancy, I applied, during the interview, the interviewer just wanted to know if i had experience and since I had it she did not even ask for any certificate or anything, I just got the job. So my own two cents is this, tell you friend to take his chance, be bold and prayerful, God can still do it. 13 Likes 1 Share |

NYSC is important in the labor merket for the following reasons; 1. There is a government law that states that unless an exemption letter has been issued by NYSC to the applicant, no Nigerian may be employed to do work in Nigeria without a NYSC completion certificate. 2. In a country where most of the employers ask for experience, NYSC does help to give every Nigerian graduate a "1 year" experience to add to their C.V's. 3 Likes |

Mr. Seun, what are the criteria for threads to make it to the front page? I can see your ploy here. You want us to bash the OP, right? Threads make it to the front page at your discretion. It's time u define the criteria for threads to make it to the front page. @OP, I feel embarassed by your poor spellings. Though the 2nd poster highlighted this. You did not make any conscious effort to edit your spellings. Your use of English is not up to scratch. Though I'm well aware of the fact that a good command of English language is not synonymous with brilliance. I suggest you read a lot of books, visit forums like nairaland, watch a lot of English movies(not Nollywood o), and watch a lot of English speaking channels like CNN, Foxnews, ABCnews, etc. It might take time. But it will surely come. Hold your head high. After all, English is not your mother tongue. |

I the past, both full-time and part-time students 're mobilized for the NYSC program but in recent time the part-timers 've been exempted from the scheme, as a measure to reduce the number of graduates that participate in the program and again because of the assumption that part-time program is primarily meant for the working class. Any successful graduates via the part-time program, 're issued an exemption certificate which is an equivalent of a discharge certificate. Any one of these can be tendered without which ur credentials would be deemed incomplete for securing a gainfull employment. Leart i forget, pls keep ur cool headedness it would certainly take u places. |

pinkrex: Like seriously!! I served with the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency office in one of the SS states, MY GOD!! At some point I had to ask what they actually did?! My boss came to work by 11am and signs the timesheet as 7:30 am, And he would leave for lunch at 12 and not return till same time next day, As much as I was paid, I felt useless as I am not a lazy person, I ended up going to work 3 times in a month, cos nobody cared. 3 Likes |

Okija_juju: You dint serve, . . . . . . . . you visited ![]() Why shouldn't a part time graduate be better than you as a fresher when he actually hustled hard on his job and maintained more perseverance to learn what he needs to keep doing to keep up with his fees? I THINK SOUND AND COMPETENT PEOPLE WORK WITH THEIR EXPERIENCED BRAIN AND ALSO DEVELOPED SKILLS. Sometimes they are more technically sound even, when you are busy propounding your theories they are already coupling the finished job. They are more dedicated because they value how they got(get) there. ![]() |

NYSC cert. gives one an edge, we also have the exemption certificate basically for those who are: 1. Over 30yrs 2. Served/serving in the military 3. Disabled (whatever they mean by that), that cert sets the graduate apart in his own class too. We also have the new 'Exclusion' letter, entirely different from the exemption and that is for part time students. Bear in mind that we have students who are under 25yrs who have never worked one day, dont have any experience yet given the exclusion letter. All these 'certificates' are there just to create a space between graduates. 2 Likes |

ednut1:I don't get it. Stay away from where? Why? Even by my own loftily cruel standards, this is quite ruthless. Besides I can see just how 'impeccable' your own spellings are. dre_d1:This is exemplary. . .I can only wish I had half of this sort of equanimity. . . . .But seriously you do need to work on your English. Admittedly, none of us can claim to be perfect but then it sure helps to be passable at least. Avoiding too much 'texticon' and abbreviations might expedite your improvement efforts. This SMS/chat shorthand culture has done untold damage to '2 mny pple in dis cyber generatn'. Watch it! @ Topic Even with an NYSC discharge certificate it is now an uphill task to find a decent job, let alone without. It would be almost impossible to secure entry-level employment with a credible organization as a fresh graduate unless you have a discharge certificate or exemption letter. It's importance or usefulness or otherwise is not the issue. We all know that in this funny country, too many people place undue emphasis on empty certificates and qualifications - many of which may have no direct correlation with a person's actual intelligence, capability, and on-the-job competence. Same goes for NYSC. It is even made worse by the existing statutes that makes it somewhat mandatory for employers to ask for the NYSC certificate or exemption letter. Accordingly, for the part time students/graduates, the only alternative might be to 'runs' an NYSC exemption letter if there is no hope of participating in the scheme. Otherwise you might only be able to work in your father's company - or in a non-graduate position elsewhere. |

Odunnu:Interesting to learn that there's also an exclusion certificate. Probably relatively new; I've never seen it nor heard about it. I assume only part-time students are eligible for that (?). . .otherwise many regular graduates that are unwilling to go though the wahala of NYSC would be applying for it. In any case I guess any kind of certificate emanating from NYSC is sufficient to satisfy employers. |

The above topic reminds me of an interview i attended when i was just 5months in the service of my father's land. I told them 'i am still serving' and one Nigerian old man just fired me, asking why i have to apply for a job when i'm still serving? Meanwhile, the white man in the panel was already creating interest in me. Realy felt bad about NYSC scheme that day. |
