$120,000 To Leave Nigeria Or 450,000 Naira Salary? by Nobody: 7:44am On Jul 06, 2020
A quick question I want to ask and know hearts of peeps.

I have a badass programmer pal. Full stack engineer. Recently did a job for someone, and made some real good cash. Like up to $120,000. The money came from building software for 3 microfinance banks in the country.
He earns over 450,000 Naira as salary here in Nigeria as well. We got talking yesterday and he's telling me he cannot stay in Nigeria, that he's resigning immediately after lock down for airports are over.

His argument is 450,000 Nigerian Naira equals
1,162.97 United States Dollar, wheras in the US / Canada for instance, the salary is way higher.

Question is what do you think ?

Lol, does Nigeria spend dollar?
If he makes let's say 5k$ over there, he won't be any different from someone making 500k here because over there he I'll still spend in $ not naira.. unless he is talking about serene environment which also comes with its own downside like racism and stuffs.

For me 500k# here over 5k$ there anyday anytime

Um, its 450,000 naira = $1600
His friend went overseas for virtually the same role, he was doing in Nigeria and presently earns $7000/month for remote jobs.
I have been in thoughts... Hence i decided to ask..

For me, i suggested if he was going to leave with that $120,000 , he should try to see if he can get at least one remote job first
So if he has
Remote Job + $120,000 then he is good to go. he wont need to worry much...

Cos me, even if na 1m naira i hold, and then I have remote Job, i no stay nigeria o.

What do you think?

E get why my brother. Ppl that are working in multinationals are escaping In droves and you are telling someone on 450k to stay back? Just use this Covid period for eg, countries are paying their citizens to stay safe, while here ppl are locked down for 2 weeks or more with no palliative. In advanced countries, basic things are not your problem. Govt will subsidize for food via food banks, housing, child support etc. In Naija, if your family don't have money to send u to University, e don be for u. But in saner climes, you can take student loan and go to school and start paying back after you have started working. Lots of student jobs for students and even grants. As long as you are healthy and hard-working, there is something to do. Here, you see a graduate without job after 3years of graduating. To even raise money to start business is another issue.

My brother, e really get why.

It is already happening naa. German student visa invitation for interview is now over the fence except you have learnt the language. I don't know if it has gotten better this month. Canada is now a battle of the Titans. USA IS banned for Nigerians, even ppl that are currently working on H1B Visa in USA are running to Canada and Australia cos no more renewal for them. To get state nomination or even federal nomination for Australia is so competitive that ppl are now queuing for regional visa despite the strict rules and same cost.etc etc Assessment that used to take 3 months b4 is now 5months cos of the increased number of ppl processing.
There will be a time that ppl will seek to leave but won't be able to again despite their money.

LOL.

1. A programmer will make more than $5k monthly by far.
2. Even if he makes only $5k monthly........$5k in US will go much more than N500k in Nigeria and he will save more than he will ever save in Nigeria.
3. Forget how much he makes in Nigeria.......this country na suffer.

What is really important is for him to leave legally if the opportunity comes because if he plans to be an illegal immigrant he will be jumping from a frying pan to fire.

If your friend is as good as you said, then by all means he should travel. Senior devs in US here make atleast on the average $130k per annum. That's about $10k+ every month. If he saves his money very well, that's a lot of cash!

there's no point for him to stay. I'm very sure your friend uses Apple laptop and he might be half way through a job. if policeman called SARS sees that and see codes on his laptop gbam yahoo boy. he will be harassed. and forced to part with money.

in January $1=350
June $1=450.
dec$1=??!

as a young guy in Nigeria you're not expected to be rich if you are and since you work remotely from home. boom your smiling neighbors will snitch and call efcc to arrest you.

you're swimming against the muddy tide.

in foreign countries the sky is your limits.

even if you set up your room with 10 laptop insofar you didn't breach security no problem.

you will be exposed to more opportunities.

10k/month a lot of cash?
Have you considered federal and state taxes, mortgage/high rent, bills of all kinds, car, health and home insurances in that 10k?
By the time Trump's Amelica system deal with you finish eeh, if you go home with 5k from that amount, na miracle unless ofcourse you have Igbotic sense. grin grin

10k a month is a lot of money. 120k a year.
Unless the person is engulfed in bad debts, 10k is more than enough even for a family.
Which tax go run with person dry with 10k salary.

What is the median salary in US states.
Even in States with the highest cost of living, their average salary is hinged at 75 to 80k so why would you say 10k a month salary is not good enough.

This your statement is full of ignorance.

Earning $10k is a lot of cash.

Most US residents don't even earn close to $10k monthly (reported median wage for 2019 was less than 50k per year).

Except the fellow is a spendthrift, you can easily save 5k from a monthly income of 10k even with taxes, rent/mortgage and student loans.....and saving 5k monthly is saving a lot of money.
