Olamyyde: I've been hearing of this, so I decided to be sure with a little googling because I never believed that generators affect phone batteries like I said in my previous post. This is some extract from quora of an answer to a similar question like this. First of all, Mobile phone charger is a DC power supply. DC power supplies are available in either Switched mode type or Linear type. While both types supply DC power, the method used to produce is different. The answer for your question is that the technology used in your charger is Switched mode. Technically the power you are getting to your home has likely been generated with a generator of some type. With exception to Solar and maybe some other obscure way of collecting energy, almost all electricity is “generated” with a generator (ie. Moving magnets past a coils of wires to create electricity). In electrical machines, we call them synchronous machines fitted with a prime mover which can be a gas turbine, hydro or steam. That being said, to be “safe” for sensitive electronics, the power must be regulated. There are many safeguards and regulators in place for most generators as well as for your phone charger, as well as in your phone. As long as the power is regulated, it won’t mater where you get it. It really is safe to use. Funnily enough, phone ‘chargers’ (they aren’t, they are a 5vdc power supply, the charger IC is inside the phone itself). In ‘olden days’ before switch modes became the norm, generators, with their often wildly swinging output voltages were indeed ‘electronics killers’- as with the old linear transformer supplies, and any change in the input voltage was reflected in the output voltage of the transformer, making the power supply of the electronics connected vulnerable to lower or higher voltages than normal… Switch modes (anything with that 100–240vac, 50/60hz sticker on it) are different- they literally don’t care what the voltage is (as far as it is within their limits), what the frequency is (another bugbear for small generators- their frequency changes as their revs change) as the first thing they do is convert that incoming mains straight to DC internally… So plugging your phones Power Supply into a generator is perfectly fine if it has that 100–240vac 50/60hz sticker on it, indeed the charger chip inside the phone will have no idea where it’s getting its 5vDC from- and battery life will be exactly the same as if it was plugged into the mains grid- no need for panicking, filtering or all the old kerfuffle about ‘gennys blow electronics up’, no need for ‘inverter generators’ or the like, if your gear has switchmode power supplies, it will literally plug into anything (including- although it is not marked as such) a straight DC supply in its range ie direct connection to high voltage battery banks, as is found in modern offgrid housing) Hope you understand. 3 Likes 2 Shares |
