Covid19: What Undergraduate Students Should Do While Waiting School Reopening by uniprojectM1: 7:41am On Jul 11, 2020 |
The covid19 pandemic has affected all sector of the economy and the school is not an exception stemming largely from the extended school closures in all over the state of the federation and the world at large. School closures impact not only students, teachers, and families, but have far- reaching economic and societal consequences. School closures in response to COVID-19 have shed light on various social and economic issues, including student debt, digital learning, food insecurity, and homelessness, as well as access to childcare, health care, housing, internet, and disability services. Students during this pandemic tend to become unproductive and lazy. However is nobody be it a student or not is suppose to be idle or unproductive because as the saying goes, an idle mind is the devil’s workshop. So below are some neek peeks on what student should engage or be doing while waiting for schools to reopen. Situation Of Covid19 In Nigeria The year 2020 was welcomed by a deadly viral outbreak called corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19), previously known as 2019- novel corona virus (2019-nCoV). COVID-19 was reported from Wuhan, the capital and major business city of Hubei province, China (Wuhan city, 2020). In a very short time, the disease spread across China and cases were reported with an exponential increase in morbidity and mortality rates. The disease has evolved and continues to be a very serious emergency across the globe. On March 11 2020 the WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic, having met the epidemiological criteria of having infected 100,000 people in at least 100 countries. However, news broke on Feb 27, 2020, that an Italian citizen who came in to Nigeria happens to be Nigeria’s first case of corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The individual had landed at Lagos airport 2 days earlier on a flight from northern Italy, and had subsequently travelled from Lagos to Ogun State, western Nigeria, where he became ill and was promptly isolated. Overtime as the day go by the cases of covid19 in Nigeria kept increasing even though the testing capacity is low. With the high population in Nigeria, there is a high risk of infection. Adjusting for this highest-risk population (i.e. older population), Nigeria has about 6.4 million people aged 65 years that are at risk of this infection. This is aside from other vulnerable populations such as those with pre-existing underlying health conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, other cardiovascular diseases, and cancers. The Role Of Nigeria Government The role of government in fighting and during this pandemic cannot be over emphasized. The government set up NCDC (National center for disease control) to help control the spread of the virus and carry out samples for testing. The government creates awareness on the nature and effect of covid19 and also letting her citizens know ways to protect themselves as well as get help if infected or knows someone who shows all signs of covid19. The government also makes available personal protective equipment especially to front line workers and some citizens who cannot afford to provide one for themselves. The government also created an isolation center for those who tested positive to the virus to avoid further spread and receive treatment. Palliatives were going to some Nigerians as well to help them manage during the lockdown. What Students Should Be Doing Now: Skills Students during this pandemic period that schools are on lockdown don’t have to stay idle and unproductive while waiting on schools to reopen, they can learn skills to improve themselves and help them even after schools since getting a white collar job after school is quite difficult. Learning of skills during this pandemic will you as a student productive and also improve you as an individual. Get a project coach Getting a project coach for undergraduate research project ideas is another thing students can do while waiting on schools to reopen. Especially for those in final year you can use this period and improve on your project by getting a project coach to put you through. Most students are at a across road as to how to go about their project, but you can use this pandemic as an opportunity to learn all you need to know about an excellent and well written project. Mastery of your project Another way you can keep yourself busy as a student is to master your project by understanding the vital point so as to defend well on the day of your defence. Get conversant with every information you’ve researched on concerning your project topic to give you an edge and confidence on the day of your defence. Improve on your grades in school Some students are battling on having good grades or upgrading on their already low grades, this pandemic and lockdown of schools can be an opportunity to self evaluates your performance in schools and look for ways to improve on them to have better grades. And this can be achieved by giving more time to studying and more research and this lockdown has given you more time to do that. Conclusion Conclusively, this pandemic should not be times to be idle and unproductive as a student instead see it as an opportunity to improve yourself and your academic performance. Read more books to enrich your intellectual ability learn skills and give it so much dedication so as the get the best of it. |
