I'm fond of writing long epistles, only because the ideas that flows through my brain can be somewhat overwhelming.

In that case, I'm going to try and make this article short and to the point. That way, I don't lose your attention.

Now you're asking, how is social media ruining my life?

You probably have Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. installed on your phone. Who doesn't?

Ask yourself, "How much time do I spend using these apps every day?"

When you're arguing with some strange online warriors, posting and watching tons of videos and memes, do you know how fast time fly?

Of course you don't, cause these platforms were created to be addictive.

If you're not using these online platforms as a tool, chances are you're using it to activate your dopamine.

It's stronger than meth, cocaine, heroin...It's like a drug you might never overcome!

Right now, you're alone. Perhaps lying on your bed. If I'm to go through your minimized apps right now, I'm certain I'll see these social media apps.

Oh.. A message just came in that you're about to check, right?

Ahhhh...!

When was the last time you slept early? Better put this way, when was the last time your phone took a one hour break, without you touching it?

Probably when you're sleeping!

You're so bored, with a very short attention span that sometimes, you find yourself depressed.

You're probably looking for reasons to close this thread, cause it's so boring! Oh yes! Your dophamine level is now getting low and its frightening.

Social media is killing you! You know it, but you're too weak to do something about it.

Every minute you're checking your messages, your notifications.

You want to know if that picture has gotten enough likes, or if that online warrior has replied to your comment.

While you're busy brushing up your social media lifestyle, your skill, talent, and career are dying.

How am i so dead accurate? Because I've been there.

You either use it, or it uses you. Do you know that the creators of these social media apps don't even use their apps?

They don't even allow their children to use it. They know the truth, how addictive it can be even to the most discipline.

I learned the hard way, and the enlightenment changed my life.

When I removed these social apps from my phone, I felt free. I felt happier! I was more productive, and richer.

Oh! I said this was going to be a short article, but look how far you've gone. For the first time, you are paying attention!

In that case, I am here to share my experience, and to help you overcome this addiction that's about to ruin your life, just like it nearly ruined mine.

This purpose of this thread is to help, cause this is a pandemic that the world isn't tackling. I have nothing to lose or gain creating this thread, but you have everything do gain.

Apologies for any grammar error or misspelling.. This isn't an English class, but an enlightening class that will change your mind.

ACCEPT THAT YOU'RE ADDICTED!

The first step to beating this addiction is acceptance.

You don't need to keep lying to yourself. Perhaps with something like, "it's helping me connect with friends and family"

You and I know that's far from the truth. When you recognize this addiction, you have a better chance beating it.

MEASURES

When I recognized my addiction, I knew I had to do something or else, I'll regret it for the rest of my life.

What I did was QUIT!

I started uninstalling every social app on my phone except WhatsApp. That's the only app I'm not addicted to LOL.

It first began as a one week challenge! The first day was terrible.

I mean TERRIBLE!

I was like a drug addict going through withdrawal.

For the first time, it dawn on my how much time I have. Time was slow! I was so freaking bored that I had to fill my time with something else.

I have always been fascinated with writing and graphic design. I took up courses and I started learning.

Strangely enough, I was happy and fulfilled. The anxiety that comes with maintaining a social life varnished.

The tech moguls who invented social media have banned their children from it.

For all the advantages they and their kids enjoy - from wealth to education - they don't trust themselves or their kids to be able to resist the charms of the very products they're promoting."

Like they say, never get high on your own supply.

Their aim is to keep you on the app without a moment break, cause the more you stay, the more money they make.

In return, you end up wasting valuable time you should use to build your talent, skill, or business.

When I was still within the claws of this monster, reading books was a problem.

When was the last time you grabbed a book to read?

You probably can't remember! When was the last time you went out, to network and meet new people?

I am not saying that social media is evil or bad. I am saying that it can be as dangerous as cocaine, if not watched. No doubt, the major cause is idleness.

I want this to be an interactive thread. I'm ready to help and guide you to overcome this addiction. Feel free to ask any questions.

Since no one is tackling this epidemic, I have stepped in to help. I launched a platform, a place where you're exposed to different ideas and entrepreneurial paths.

No doubts, they will help you brush up your skills, start that business and become better

Thanks for reading

Thank you.. This is all true, I have had to uninstall some of my social media and left only Facebook because of the toxic and depressing media I end up taking in everyday, apart from the money that I waste on data to watch endless YouTube Instagram and twitter videos, spending too much time there drains you, I just take a break sometimes and I come here(nairaland) to read the headlines and keep up.

I deactivated my facebook account in January because I don't see any helpful information there, all I see is adult and teenagers fooling theirselves up and down posting yeye pictures.

I'm out.

The only thing I'm addicted to now is KDP

The day I quit Facebook, twitter and Instagram was the best day of my life.

If I want to stay updated, a simply scan through NL front page.

YouTube became a learning ground for me. I was always complaining of time.. But now, I have so much time to spare.

You're right. From having alI the popular apps to only Facebook & I just recently registered here. I can very much relate.

The major issue is joblessness. Most people have too much idle time on their hands which they're not harnessing.

I also dont think staying totally off social media is a great idea. There's a lot to learn, gain & catch up on if we can regulate use & split much of our idle time on other productive ventures that add value to us.

Thanks for this OP. Great job!

Online? There are numerous ways to go about it. But what I always tell people is to first pursue a path that aligns with their passion.

For instance, I discovered that I'm kinda good at writing.

So, I picked up freelance writing and I charge from #2 to #5 per word.

For a 1000 words article, I can make from #2000 to #10,000. Pretty cool, right?

To share my knowledge, I even started a blog.

Finding clients isn't easy though, especially foreigners since they believe every Nigerian is a scammer. It's not easy at all..

Mini importation, dropshipping, affiliate marketing, etc. are also great ways, but will require settling down to learn the ropes.

It isn't something you just rush in and expect results overnight.

Others will include Blogging, Vlogging (YouTube), or simply starting an offline business.

When you discover a business you want to start, stick to it until you make it.

I love applying the 2-year rule, which entails focusing on a thing for 2 years irrespective of weather is yielding result or not.

You know why? Most times, we find ourselves giving up on a lucrative idea just because of our impatient.

I agree with you. Social Media is not bad, but when one feels the need to constantly post or comment for validation's sake, it becomes a problem.

It should be a tool, not something that keeps us away from reality.

The day I monitored how many hours I spend on Facebook in a day, I nearly ran mad. It was ridiculous!

But if you don't monitor it, you won't even know lol. What a drug!

Glad you're one of the few free ones!

Great thread I must say! Social media isn’t bad per say but if not regulated becomes a trap that sucks life out of you.

The urge to constantly need validation , keep up to peer pressure, look larger than life can not be fully satisfied. Hence balance is needed or else destruction is bound to happen.

Social media is seriously ruining my life. I spend so much money on data daily without any benefits gotten from using these apps.

I'm seriously uninstalling Instagram, but my FB account stays active but I'd be spending very little time on it.

When I was young, I had several skills, but as a result of this addiction for social media, I can barely brag about having numerous skills.

Social Media was created to be addictive.. Every day, new lines of codes are added, psychologist and experts in human behavior are employed, to tweak the program in order to enhance longevity. If you're not the drawn to social media, you're lucky. But there are billions of people who are. Even NL can be addictive. The aim is to use these platform as tools, but not everyone can adhere 100%. Which is why sometimes, you just have to uninstall and breath some air.

Monitor the time you spend on Facebook. When I was getting ready to quit, I started by limiting my usage to 3hrs daily. My phone has a wellbeing app that allows me to assign duration to apps.. Once it elapse, the app will shutdown! Start gradually - set a goal!

Disadvantages? I don't think there is any since you won't be buying products. You simply discover a lucrative niche, then upload the products pictures to your store. When customers make an order, you process it through your supplier. The main work lies in marketing, as you will need to constantly run ads for your products. If there is any challenges, it will be the capital since creating an online store might not be cheap.
