Nigerian can't grow because we refuse to allow merit ...u refuse to allow merit out of fear igbos would dominate .... So letting igbos go would even help Nigeria 7 Likes |

Anyone know when this ‘affirmative action’ is supposed to end? You claim we’re all equally capable and that Igbos have nothing to ‘brag’ about, yet the list says otherwise! It’s a bloody disgrace! 1 Like |

Nigeriabiafra80: I am not surprised that a Biafran is the one lamenting. Always greedy to a pathological fault. Like I have posited many times on this forum, Federal Unity School cut off marks are the only quota system implementation that I agree with. The cut off mark of 139 for Anambra versus 2 for Yobe, is what it would take for both states to have say 200 students each in the Unity Schools. The higher score in Anambra is only a testament of the educational development of both the state and the academic prowess of the students whose origin is Anambra regardless of which state they actually reside or school. No state is cheated in having reasonable and equitable number of students benefit from the special schools, which were set up after the civil war to unite children from diverse ethnicities, religion and states, to learn together and grow in harmony, and benefit from the federal government subsidy that such schools enjoy with the subsidized education at a fairly good standard. Any child from Anambra who does not make it to such Unity schools despite scoring higher than a fellow child from Yobe, has only failed to get onto the quota already reserved for Anambra. Even the quota reserved for Yobe and other Northern states will never be used up and will still be shared by Southern states. It is not a denial of education not to attend Unity Schools, as they do not even make up to 1% of secondary schools in Nigeria that are more populated with State public schools and private schools. Enough of this yearly wailing over a quota that belong to others and for which you have already received your own share to allot with higher scores because of the stiffer academic competition among the candidates from that state. I never went to a Unity School, yet I did not miss out on anything tangible or prerequisite to my future accomplishments. 2 Likes |

Let me educate you guys: Why was Unity School Established? To foster national unity through the interactions of pupils from different part of the country. What is the mode of admission? Admission into unity schools is based on a quota system; 30% of candidates are selected on merit irrespective of their state of origin; another 30% from other states; then 30% from the host state; and the final 10% are admitted based on exigency. So based on this the scores does not matter much because 60% of students will be chosen on merit from the other states in any host states. That means the school in Borno will still be dominated by at least 60% of students from other part of Nigeria with the cut off mark and will be based on merit. Why do some states have high cut-off mark? Excluding the educationally disadvantaged North, other states have cut-off mark to reflect sometimes the population of student and number of schools in the zone. If for example 20,000 students scores 140 in a zone with more schools and 10000 students can be enrolled, the cut off mark will be lower since there are extra school to accommodate them. If the 20,000 student scores 140 in a zone with lesser school and 10000 students can be enrolled, then the cut-off mark need to be raised so as to shed off the extra students that can't be accommodated Number of Unity Schools By Zone: NC: 24 SW: 18 NW:18 SS: 17 NE: 15 SE:12 So SE with that much population and few unity schools will have a high cut-off mark than their counterparts. Especially when talking about the South. Note: Some Northern state are anomalies and nothing can justify a state having just 2 as cut-off mark. I am as shocked like Buhari hearing this. 3 Likes 1 Share |

trutharena: Please educate the ignorant who yearly wail as though they were denied their birth rights. It is indeed shameful for the North to have such low marks in an attempt to utilize their own quota. The academic development is very appalling till date. Even with those low marks, most Northern states cannot still fulfill their own quota of student delegates to contribute to the federal Unity programme. 3 Likes |

Throwback:As in a lot of Ignorant people exist in this country. They just see cut-off mark and run online to talk without knowing the reason. However in some part of the North, I can only but weep for those guys coz how do we reconcile a whole state having 2 as cut-off mark? Are they not even ashamed to fix that kind of mark. So we mean a state can't have students that will score an average of even 50 in exams into unity school. I think looking at those states with low cut-off mark, the southerners will dominate the schools because they have to satisfy the 30-60% requirement of students from other zone or states. Gowon's dream when he created it was to foster unity which explained why they had to make sure it accommodates every Nigerians. |

Nigeriabiafra80: Your problem is that you see a competition where there is none. Let me come down to the basic level of your zombified and bigoted Biafran logic. The federal Unity Schools Programme is a contributory system where each state sends delegates to represent them in the objective of the federal government to engender unity among Nigerian kids, as a aftermath of the Nigerian civil war. Anambra, Lagos, Kano, Yobe, etc have the specified number of delegates to provide the federal government to achieve the objective set out. For every student who participates, you get a fairly sound education that is heavily subsidized. Anambra has a high cut off because a lot of very bright students are jostling for the slots of student delegates already available to Anambra even before the exams were set, which is called the state quota. The cut off mark set is just the margin that allows the state to screen off the rest who will not have any slot to occupy in the Anambra team of delegates. Yobe has a low cut off because very few and academically poor students are jostling for the slots of student delegates available to Yobe even before the exams were set. From experience, Yobe will never be able to meet up with its number of allocated student delegates, because even those who score above 2 will not be interested in furthering their education, while a sizeable number will proceed to better private schools as it also happens in the South. So sheathe your sword and stop agonizing over a marginalization that does not exist in this specific matter. Let Chinedu and Segun who did not make the cut off set by Anambra and Ogun, proceed to other schools and continue their education. It is not the end of their academic exploits that they could not be delegates to the Unity programme, while Mairuwa made the delegate slot of Yobe with only a score of 2. At the end of the day, the Federal Government has ensured that each state sent delegates to achieve the unity agenda amongst a diverse people. Stop wailing over what was never yours. 3 Likes |
