A business plan on *Cucumber Farming.*

https://afroagropower.

The best variety for cucumber farming which produces bigger and tastier fruits is the "cu 999" specie.
With good soil, organic manure, fungicides and irrigation, a plot of land will contain 1,500 cu 999 cucumber stands which will yield 8 -10 fruits before they wither. A bag of cucumber can sell for up to 5,000 naira during it's off season.

A sachete of "CU 999" variety contains between 1,700 - 1,800 seeds. 10 sachetes will be needed to cater for 2 plots of land.

Working with an estimate of obtaining an average of 5-6 fruits per plant, the philosophy and psychology of selling during the raining and dry seasons will be centered around quality management through proper irrigation and manuring. One bag of cucumber will contain between 60-75 fruits because of the big sizes of "CU 999" specie.

Cost Implication of planting Cucumber till harvesting on 2 plots of land.

With a budget of 150,000 naira;

3,000 cucumber crops can be managed for 45 days in a stand of 1,500. The Silver pack of containing between 1,700 - 1,800 CU 999 seeds cost about 8,000 naira while the Gold pack containing between 3,500 - 4,000 CU 999 seeds cost about 15,000 naira.

Cost of "CU 999" seeds: 30,000 naira

Cost of manure from poultry farm : 3,000 naira

Cost of labour for ridging: 20,000 naira

Cost of labour for planting: 20,000 naira

Cost of Staking: 10,000 naira

Cost of bag threads for 2 plots : 7,000 naira

Cost of 4 Haifa Bonus Foilar Fertilizers: 7,400 naira

Cost of NPK Fertilizer : 7,200 naira

Cost of 4 saaf fungicide : 4,000 naira,

Cost of 20 satchets ridomilgold : 7,600 naira and

Cost of 6 imiforce : 6,000 naira.

Cost of labour for weeding, fertilizer and insecticide application: 50,000 naira

Miscellaneous: 30,000 naira

These are the needed requirements to see the project through.

Note: we will not use inorganic fertilizer because of 5 -10 percent losses in yield occur whenever inorganic fertilizers are used. A nearby poultry farm flushes it wastes away so we go organic with weekly sprays of Haifa bonus foilar fertilizer for micro nutrients.

The remaining balance will be reserved for fuel for pumping water and running other logistics.

Expected Returns

2 plots of land with proper agronomy management will yield between 100 - 170 bags of about 40kg weight each.

The harvest is done after about 45 days of maturity of the Cucumber plants. Harvest will be done every 4 days till the Cucumber plants stops to bear fruits.

Averagely, 2 plots of land will produce 120 bags of bags that sells between 3,000 naira to 8,000 naira on every harvest.

Between 5 - 8 harvests are expected throughout a life span of Cucumber plants which is generally between 90 - 120 days.

Calculating sales of Cucumbers per bag to be 4,000 naira for an harvest of 120 bags for a 5 times harvest;

4,000 naira × 120 bags × 5 harvests = 2,400,000 naira.

But to be optimistic one can get 1,200,000 on 5 harvest

A business plan on *ugwu farming*

https://afroagropower.

Planting materials

Seeds of the vegetable are grown into seedlings in a nursery and are transplanted into the growing fields. The pod bearing the seeds are harvested at the end of a cycle, the seeds are extracted and dried for a day or two. They should not be over-dried to preserve the viability of the seeds. The drying of the seeds helps them to be resistant to pests that could have eaten them up in the soil. It also prevents them from rotting.

“Don’t dry the seeds that have already sprouted, the sun will dry them up. Alternatively you can easily just buy pumpkin seedlings from nurseries owners. During planting seasons, pumpkin seeds can be as cheap as N100 to N300, but during non-planting seasons, it is as high as N500."

A farmer can also make money selling the seedlings by buying several seeds and establishing a nursery. Households can also be helped to establish backyard automated irrigated gardens.

Planting of pumpkin

Farmers will always sell the vegetable irrespective of the season you plant. It requires little experience to start. A farmer will make good returns because he can plant three times in a year.

Ugwu is sustainable, income-generating and less stressful.

“The ideal planting season of fluted pumpkin is between April and May, because during this period, the rains are minimal. After dressing the soil, the next thing to do is to plant. You should plant the seeds two to three feet apart. This should be done very early in the morning or late evening. You can also plant when the weather is cool and calm. The seeds are to be planted two to three seeds per hole.

“Dig a hole of 4-5cm into the soil and plant the seed with the tip facing down. Cover the seed with a little sand; be sure the ugu is well covered to avoid exposure to the sun. After 10 days, place a stick of 1m-2m heights close to the pumpkin seed. The plant will climb around the stick while growing. It is better to use a stick because the plant will grow better when it climbs around something.

Irrigation of pumpkin plants

After planting the seeds, start irrigating (watering) the farm and its surroundings every two days, morning and evening.
Irrigating or wetting with water might not be necessary in the rainy periods, but during dry seasons or droughts, intensive irrigation is required. This means you need a source of water either, well or bore hole depending on the resources at your disposal. Pumpkin plants require frequent watering to stay growing and green.

Weeding/pest control

Weed prevention methods of mulching, herbicides, as well as manual weeding would be required to maintain the pumpkin farm. Mulching means covering the farm with nylon, sawdust, or other materials to increase moisture and suppress weeds infestation. Early weeding is the best thing to do if herbicides and mulching are not applied. When weeding is delayed, the leaves will turn yellowish because the weeds will always feed on the nutrients on the soil too.

“The use of manual method is preferred due to the crawling nature of pumpkin. It always covers the ground where staking is not used. In this case, the vegetable suppresses weeds as they grow into maturity. Care must be taken not to trample on the pumpkin plant during weeding. Most diseases that affect pumpkin are airborne and most of the insects are boring ones. An example is caterpillar. Insecticides should be used in recommended quantity for pest and insect control, strictly following instructions on usage. You must protect your pumpkin farm from goats and other herbivores by proper fencing of the farm.

Soil fertility boosting

Livestock or poultry compost manures are usually applied on the soil before planting, after four weeks and after six weeks. For those who want to use inorganic fertiliser, they should apply after planting and wait after adding the fertiliser for eight days before harvesting to avoid food poisoning. However, the organic fertiliser has proven to be more economical and safer than inorganic one. Since harvesting is done daily or weekly, depending on the size of the farm, there is need to give the soil enough nutrients so that the pumpkin can keep growing well.

Maturity and harvesting

With adequate water, pumpkin germinates 10 days after planting. Farmers can start harvesting two to four weeks after planting or when the stems are long. Farmers should use hands or knives to cut the stem a little distance away from the bottom of the stem. Position your hands where you have the nodes and cut. The pod is ripe for harvest when the tendrils are dried; sometimes they fall off on their own. With a lot of water and manure, the vegetable would do well, and much could be made in the dry seasons.

Economics of pumpkin cultivation

Pumpkin is one of the most consumed vegetables in Nigeria. However, strategic marketing to hotels, eateries and hostels could make the farming more profitable than selling through the middle women.

Cost Analysis for setting up an Ugwu farm on 2 plots from the available 1 Hectare of farmland.

1 hectare = 13 plots.

Planting Ugwu on 2 plots of land will leave the other 5 vegetables to be planted on 11 plots of land available.

Buying the pods @ 300 naira per pod. (High price limit)

Adopting the planting space of 2 feet by 3 feet; then our spacing will method will be 0.6 meters × 0.9 meters.

Hence, the breakdown of setting up 2 plots of Ugwu farm is as follows:

BREAKDOWN ANALYSIS FOR UGWU FARM ON A PLOT OF LAND

We will get 12 standard beds of ugwu on a plot of land.

The measurement of a standard ugwu bed is 20ft width and 30ft length and about sixty (60) bunches can be derived from a bed. The retailer sells each one hundred naira which means he/she makes a profit of 60 x N100= N6000 from each bed.

LAND DIMENSION/COST

A standard plot of 60 x 120 will contain 12 beds of ugwu using the standard ugwu bed measurement which is 20 x 30.

SEED REQUIREMENT

To plant a full standard bed of ugwu, we will be planting 2 seeds per hole. We will need 250 holes per bed. Hence, we will need 500 seeds for the 250 holes per bed.

In total for a plot of land, we will need to plant 500 seeds x 12 beds = 6,000 seeds for a plot of land.

Hence for 2 plots of land, we will need to plant 12,000 seeds.

A paint bucket contains 300 to 320 seeds so about 40 bucket of seeds will be needed.

Miscellaneously, 45 buckets of seeds will be needed

A bucket of seed is sold for N5000 x 45 = N250,000

MANURING

For a plot of land, a farmer will need about 7 bags of dry manure and each cost about N800 per bag which is N800 x 7 bags = N5,600.

For 2 plots of land; cost of manure = 5,600 × 2 = 13,200 naira.

LABOUR

The labour cost is based on negotiation. However, the standard charge is N300 per bed × 12 beds = N3600 for a plot.

Hence for 2 plots;

N3,600 × 2 = N7,200.

BREAKDOWN SUMMARY for cultivating Ugwu on 2 plots.

Seed purchase ............ 5,000 naira x 45 buckets of seeds

Transportarion of seeds to farm ……. N 5,000

Planting of seed …… 20,000 naira

Manure …………….........800 naira x 7 × 2 plots

Labour ……………......... 300 naira x 12 × 2 plots

Fertilizer …………….......9500 naira x 2 times × 2 plots

Wetting …………...........1400 x 2(x2/ week) × 2 plots

Pesticide ………………....3600 × 2 plots

Total = N

EXPECTED RETURN ON INVESTMENT

A bed of sells for N2500 during the normal or wet season and goes as high as N5,000 per bed during the dry season. However, this depends on how full the bed is.

@ 2,500 naira per bed;

2,500/bed x 12beds = N30,000 every 3 weeks.

For the 2 plots of Ugwu Cultivation;

N30,000 × 2 = N60,000 every 3 weeks.

The harvest of Ugwu leaves can continue like this every 3 weeks for up to 6 - 8 months until productivity drops.

Revealing The Secrets many people will sell to you for Free.

Business Plan On PLANTATION OF HOT PEPPER.

HOT PEPPER

Pepper belongs to the Solanacea family. Other members of this family includes tomato, tobacco, eggplant and Irish potato. There are different varieties of pepper available to choose from. You just have to go to the pepper sellers in your area and find out the variety that sales well. Then visit a state ministry of Agric. and find out where you can buy the seeds. Some people who sell agro-chemicals in markets may also sell seeds.

Pepper mature in 3-4 months and with proper maintenance, you can harvest it continually for 6 months or more. You’ll make much more money if you have access to irrigation facilities so you can irrigate your plants during the dry season. This can either be in the form of borehole or stream/river. In most places in Nigeria, you can easily rent farmlands that are close to rivers that flows even in the dry season.

A plot of land (100x60ft) will contain 1080 plants (50cm space between plants and 1m between rows).

Soil Requirement:

Peppers can tolerate most types of soil that are well-drained. But they do well in sandy loam or loamy, fertile soils. Optimal soil pH is 6 to 6.8. The soil pH strongly influences plant growth, the availability of nutrients, and the activities of microorganisms in the soil. It is strongly recommended that you carry out soil test before planting (I didn’t, but for large-scale farming, I definitely will). Soil test will help you know how much fertilizer to add and whether to lime or not. If your soil needs liming, lime should be broadcasted and thoroughly mixed with the soil to a depth of 6-8 inches. This is important because lime/calcium have limited mobility in the soil. So you have to make them reach the root zone. The neutralizing effect of lime is very slow. So add lime 2-3 months before sowing or transplanting. If this is not possible, add lime at least 1 month before sowing or transplanting.

Air Temperature:

Hot peppers tend to grow well when temperature is 24-32°C during the day and 18-24°C at night. Significantly higher or lower temperatures can have negative effects on fruit set and quality. Temperatures for good fruit set is between 20 and 29°C. In drought and heat stress, pepper plants not only lose flowers, but also buds. Loss of buds delays flowering by several weeks and reduces yields dramatically. Factors influencing flower drop or loss of buds include poor light intensity, excessive nitrogen and insect damage.

If extreme temperature is a problem for you, inter-crop pepper with tall plants like maize, okra, trellised legumes and vines. This plants will cast shade on the pepper plant and help relieve extreme temperature effects.

The journals of the early European merchants, sailors and slavers about pre-colonial Afrika always tells of a glorious land with wealthy empires and communities. Food was surplus; beggars and destitutes were impossible to find in our massive city centres. Without farm animals for beast of burdens in our climes, we grew enormous agricultural communities (city-states). These city-states we call our hometowns and villages today. These city-states were fairly independent and interdependent on communities from far and wide through trade. Our lands are marvelously fertile and arable. Children grew up learning the family trade from infancy, and each extended family unit was fairly independent and interdependent.

We are richly blessed with mineral resources. Our rulers and noble men adorned solid gold, ivory, bronze. Even after the slave trade, European powers flooded sub-Saharan Afrika in the guise of colonialism to bleed our resources and agricultural wealth; resources they still exploit till date. Our sub-Saharan Afrikan region is blessed with a fortunate climate and plate tectonic activities. There's hardly ever a volcanic eruption, earthquake or hurricane report in our communities, and all of our indigenous Afrikan challenges are mostly man-made.

Afrikans, therefore, are the only problem of Afrika. We are sitting on a piece of land flowing with milk and honey; the very chosen land, yet we do not take advantage of the huge potential sources of wealth we possess. We are like the first sons, the oldest human phenotypical race who herited all of the goodies from mother Earth; and ended up misusing the blessings our ancestors had utilized to grow into the place of beauty and power the first European visitors wrote of. Our European and Asian brethren continue to bleed our resources for their separate development, whilst we wallow in unimaginable poverty. We are sitting in a lake, yet thirsty for water. Today, we have the poorest and most starving people any human society had ever known.

There is a remedy to our malady though. We just have to trace back to our roots; the future of Afrika lies in our traditional culture; our culture of agriculture. Our ancient cities were agricultural and mining real estates grew their own foods, made their own clothing and built their own homes. Agriculture and mining provides the basic needs of food, clothing and shelter, whilst providing the preliminary conditions needed for a society to grow wealth. The G20 nations are all sufficient in providing for their basic needs of their people as their agricultural sector is fully developed. The bulk of the American economy today, which is the largest, is still being sustained from the wealth generated locally and internationally through the avenue of agriculture.

A lot of the youths in our societies may not know, as very little attention is paid to the agriculture and anything agro-allied, but we are on tethering on the very edge of a revolution that is about to sweep Nigeria this new decade. Our agricultural sector is one of the fastest rising in our economy, and is bound to dominate the economical mainstay of several Afrikan nations once again. Never a time in the past 30 years of Nigerian history has there been this much literate and innovative folks participating in agriculture. State governments and the Federal government of Nigeria have embarked several agricultural projects that are bound to bring about a turn around to the development of our local communities. The agriculture and the agro-allied sector is bound to be the biggest employer of labour by 2040.

With the innovative machinery and procedures already developed in Agriculture, early investments in agriculture and agricultural real estates today are bound to rake in massive returns this decade. Our so-called "villages" would rapidly develop into structured city-centres and communities in the coming decades whilst further rural-urban migration would be greatly mitigated.
