Growing up as an only child, everything I ever wanted was at my beck and call as long as I behaved despite my mum's effort to teach me the ways of independency, my dad's toxic masculinity would always object as "a man had no business in the kitchen", I got so used to being pampered that I became useless to myself (kitchenwise i.e). Now, I got a job and it's a job that gives me more time to myself, i'm just getting into this whole bachelor thing (I hope I get it right though) and now I reflect to the teachings of my mother.
I've been a spectator on this thread for a while but looking at the meals made by my fellow men like blueraydick and akposy made me step up, big ups to you man. I've been ordering and eating out ever since so I decided to try something new for breakfast today, I wanted to whip up some fluffy pancakes and bean pudding (moin moin) and scrambled eggs to be eaten with a custard tart, downloaded the recipe off the internet and boy did I make a mess.
Just look at the disaster called pancake (first attempt) that I tried to make.... At least my custard, moin moin and scrambled eggs(both are first attempt) turned out ok but i'm so ashamed of myself. I called my mum and showed her what I made, she laughed to the point she couldn't laugh no more. I deserve and need the criticism so that I can better myself, please feel free to point out my flaws and tbh, I enjoyed cooking and I want to cook more

P. S: it's my first food post, at least whilst critical, abeg show me some love.... At least I wan step up

You're on the right track bro. I only eat home cooked meals and I'll rather starve to death than eat in a restaurant, I've even stopped by corn on the roadside. The main secret to making a good pancake is a nonstick pan, the regular frying pan would likely give the kind of result you got.

I believe you are on the right track bro, the journey of a thousand mile begins with a step.
I will only advise u don't get discouraged with the result of Ur first attempt at cooking.

1. I believe you should've started with not so difficult meals. I mean meals like rice and stew, yam and egg etc. That way u will build confidence when it turns out good and u will be able to go for the more difficult ones.

2. As regards watching YouTube videos / getting online recipe, it is actually a good thing to watch videos and take note of estimated timing given by the food vloger in the video. However it is advisable you watch more than one video of a particular meal. I mean watch 3-4 videos of let's say fried rice, see the different methods they use, how different their output was and the similarities in their ingridients /process of cooking. This way, u will be able to come up with the best one that u think will work for u. You don't necessarily need to stick with their own recipe especially where some of the ingridients they are using are not locally available in Ur location.

3. I will also suggest u get the right utensils like non sticky frying pan, spatula, pots etc. These things at times define how Ur meal will come out. If watch those YouTube videos u will understand some of the food vlogers have particular type of utensils they use which makes their food come out the way they are.

4. I was once like u and I didn't really have any need to cook. I was surrounded by sisters and a caring mum that always made my stomach filled from childhood. In the university my roommates were all excellent cooks and only allowed me cook less than 3 times in the whole 4 years spent in the uni....But I had basic ideas of cooking, I learn quite fast and I pay attention to details even when it appears on the I don't. I started cooking out of necessity during NYSC( I once shared the story here).

Now that you have identified the need for u to be a better cook, u just need to show interest and ur mum will be wowed by the dishes u will make in the next few weeks.

5.During the lockdown I had so much time on my hand and cooked as much as I wanted. I sent some of the pictures to my Bae; she pic mixed it and kept on her status( see attached one of the pix mix). She was being encouraged to open a restaurant not knowing say na omoboy cook am. Seeing the comments I was impressed with myself.

All I'm saying is u've started and that's what matters, keep up with the cooking and u will be proud of Ur culinary skills soon enough.

PS: sorry if I bore you with my epistle according to St. Blueray cool
