CHAPTER TWENTY THREE

The sun was already up in the sky, people were at their different places of work and students had gone to school. Daniel relaxed fully on his sofa shuffling through different TV channels, it was the third day of his three months suspension. His heart skipped a beat and he stared at his hands, the goosebumps had appeared again. That would be the second time since that morning. His phone started ringing, he stretched his hand and took it from the table, he checked the caller ID, it was an unsaved number, he picked up after a brief contemplation.


"Hello, doctor, please come, my husband is dying" the voice of a crying woman hit his ears.


"Where are you?" he asked, standing on his feet, instantly.


"In our house, at Nise" she panted.


"Take him to the hospital" he replied Swiftly.


"He can't walk and there is no help around us, you are our only hope" she cried the more. Daniel closed his eyes for some seconds, opened it and muttered "Am coming right away, text me the full address" he dashed into his bedroom, grabbed his medical box and his stethoscope, dashing off like a flash of light, without waiting to know how the caller got his number.


He hit the road, muttering a silent prayer for the man, hoping to meet him alive. He left Nibo town and headed towards Nise. Just before the Nise Junction, he heard a loud bang, someone had hit his car from behind. He looked through the rearview mirror, a black Lexus with a tinted glass was speeding up behind him, he wondered who the driver was. Another loud bang followed by the sound of deflating tyres, sent his car off, out of control. He swerved the car to the right and hit a tree, making him hit his head on the steering. The windscreen shattered to pieces and pierced his head. his vision became blurry, looking sideways, through the window, he could make out the structures of three hefty men walking towards his car, he closed his eyes as blood trickled down his face. His car went up in flames, he could feel the heat drawing closer to him, he closed his eyes, seeing his own death with his eyes, "Bari, am sorry" he muttered before slipping into unconsciousness.










"You mean all these things happened within these few days of my travel?" Chioma asked, looking at Bari in shock.


"Am telling you, babe. The girl practically attacked me because of a man"


'Nawa ooo, this matter tie gele" Chioma said, letting out a throaty laugh.


"No be small gele, my sister. I don't blame her sha, i blame this stupid aqua nonsense, i was so ashamed when i scratched myself in front of people right at the junction" she gritted her teeth.


"She sha get luck, had it been i was there, chai, you know what i can do na, i don't talk too much, na to just land her one slap first" she bragged.


"Chioma, i know you very well, thank God you were not there that day. You would have given her the beating of her life" Bari chuckled, briefly.


"She should go for Thanksgiving service in church" she rolled her eyes.


"Am sure she will" Bari said, laughing.


"So like this now, Daniel don turn jobless overnight?" she asked all of a sudden.


"My dear, you don see am ooo, but, it's all for good. Just three months and everything will go back to normal" she nodded.


"Three months is not three days, i feel for him"


"He will be fine" Bari shrugged.


"So, tell me, have you guys done it?" she winked at Bari who gave her a confused stare.


"Do what?"


"Do the do na. Have you guys eaten the forbidden fruit" she winked at her again before bursting into a loud laugh.


"Chioma, you are crazy, i no get your time now" she laughed, shaking her head. Her phone started ringing, she picked it up and waited for the caller to speak first, a practice she had learnt from her Mom, waiting for an unknown caller to speak first. "Yes, i know Daniel, any problem?" she said. she waited for a few seconds before she shouted "Oh my God, which hospital?" she stood up, already grabbing her bag. "Am coming right away" she said before turning to Chioma who already had questions to ask.


"It's Daniel, he just got into an accident" she muttered weakly, already heading out


"Oh my goodness, am so sorry" Chioma said, following behind.



They got to the hospital, Bari called the informant who picked and told her to meet him at the reception. Bari rushed immediately to the reception, leaving Chioma who wondered if she was flying. Bari dashed into the reception and went straight to the receptionist "My name is Bari, someone called me earlier and said i should meet him here" she panted heavily.


"Concerning an accident victim?" the receptionist asked.


"Yes" Bari replied, almost immediately.

"Please sit, he will be here shortly" the receptionist said, picking up the landline.


"No, let me stand" Bari muttered. Chioma strutted into the reception breathing heavily. Bari eyed her briefly before taking her gaze away.


"Are you here for Daniel?" a young man asked from the door.


"Yes, we are" Bari replied, sharply.


"Follow me" he turned and left, while the two ladies scurried behind. They left the reception and walked through a short narrow corridor, after a few minutes, they were out in an open space, Bari looked up, there was a building, far away from the building they just left. from afar, it looked like it had been deserted. Scantily grown grasses covered the area.


"Where are we going to?" she asked, stopping in her tracks.


"To see Daniel" the young man answered, walking away and they followed still. Chioma pinched Bari and whispered "I don't trust this man, this place looks scary"


"As long as he is taking us to Daniel, i will follow him" Bari replied. They finally got to the building, it looked old and had tiny green grasses sprouting on the wall. He led them through a passage and stopped in front of a room. Fishing a bunch of keys out from his pocket, he inserted into the key hole and turned it. Bari looked up and a small placard above the door had "We Were Once Like You, You Will Soon Be like Us" written on it.


Bari blinked her eyes, she knew the place that always housed that type of inscription. "The Morgue" she screamed when the realization had hit her. "What are we doing here? this is a morgue" she asked, panting in fear.


"Because Daniel is here" the young man replied, giving the door a gentle push, it gave way.


"Which Daniel? how can Daniel be here? you said he had an accident, he should be in one of the wards receiving treatment" she shrieked.


"He had an accident but he didn't survive, he was already D.O.A" he shrugged.


"What's that?" Chioma asked.


"Dead On Arrival" he replied, firmly.


"How can he die? I spoke with him just this morning, he said he wasn't going out, how come he is dead. Take him back to the ward now, that's where he should be" she thundered.


"Just come with me" the young man said walking into the room. Bari walked inside like an angry lion, there were bodies laying on the floor, which were covered with a piece of cloth. The young man bent down, close to a body laying at the extreme of the room, he peeled off the piece of cloth covering it. Bari and Chioma gasped in shock, covering their mouth. The body was badly burnt, beyond recognition.


"Who is this?" Bari asked, trying to control her beating heart.


"He is Daniel" he replied, softly.


"Daniel?" Bari asked, before she passed out.
