A lot of issues about PHP. It worked perfectly for small jobs but I doubt if any big organization will use PHP for advanced applications like big financial applications. PHP is vulnerable. A little coding mistake will expose one application to hackers. It's also slow, it eats a lot of memory. You won't feel that speed deficiency in a simple website, but you will feel if you want to develop an application like zoom. People always refer to Facebook to defend PHP efficiency, but many people don't know that Facebook develop their own PHP version (HHVM) to fix those disadvantages in the original PHP. GrantCashel: I ve taken the most unconventional approach to learning programming. Being unserious in secondary school, it affected my progress in 2018. You need to settle any problem you have with math if you dont want any issues. Google pdfdrive.com and download in this order developmental math for college students, college algebra and trigonometry, linear algebra, classical geometry, calculus, advanced calculus, vector calculus, ordinary and partial differential equations. If you want to avoid begging to build websites on nairaland, avoid web development, android or any shiny applications until you're theoretically grounded. Okay So after learning all the above What's next? |

Lol. In hindsight, i wish i learned the math first....lists in python, nested loops and 3d arrays in C, recursion took like forever to understand, even when i thought i did, i couldnt harness its true power. indeed those grounded in theoretical computing can easily get a quick jump. I have met very good programmers who can take forever to develop a recursive function to solve a problem. 1 Like |

saajus: Yes, it is possible. just a few changes. I'm an average programmer in python not even proficient, and there was a time I want to work on an android app, I picked up the syntax within two weeks to achieve what I want. Not a complicated task, though. Just a simple day to day application. You know Android studio is Java.
Remember, one can pick up the language quickly, but proficiency takes a lot of practice. One must be using it to solve problems daily to be proficient. Programming is not for everybody, especially people that can’t sit down in one place for so long. I have a similar problem, I can’t stay in one place for many hours. That’s why I prefer the architect side of it and leave the coding parts for others. You write a program for 1hr, you debug for 5hrs. That's why Introverts do better in coding.
What do you mean by the architect side of it.can you pls explain.thanks

In big organization, they will have software architect and software programmer. Architects are the ones that will break the problems down, draw the flow diagram, and do some other few things. They basically solve the problem. Programmers just come and code the solutions.

Online courses (MOOC) are good but it's easy to get distracted by internet surfing and social media. Its also quite easy to not fully commit because you are learning at your own pace which might be a disaster because not all of us are super disciplined. It's very e itasy to jump from course A to Course B based on what your friend said about this language or stuff like that. I got tons of youtube videos on my PC but I only watch the ones that are presented like a Full Course.
You need to commit! One of the most efficient ways is a classroom learning experience. Forget that NIIT has good books and bad teachers. The teachers show you the way, it's your duty to study and do the grueling work of writing and debugging actual code and programs. It's your money on the line. It comes with some seriousness.
By the time you are done with a 3-6mths programming course and a certificate, you are beginning to think like a hacker and start having the "Hacker mindset" (that is, a solution provider), and you can increase your learning with this online courses and youtube videos and actually follow along and understand it. This is where I recommend online learning.
mention a school in Lagos one can get trained within that space of time and the requirements for admission. |

Well, I will give you an honest opinion in the optimistic context.
While many say "sure you can", at that age the truth is its relative to a lot of factors. I don't want to discourage you cos they right, you can achieve anything if you true to your goals but am the type that like to be realistic and true to my self. Not that its impossible, its just that how prepared are you mentally for the task ahead considering your antecedence.
You need to be true to yourself. Many don't understand the concept of programming as it is multifaceted on its own. The are many types of programming languages out there. So depending on what you are going for will also determine whether you can cope or not.
Also there are different aspects of programming. Basically, there is the frontend and a backend side of programming. The latter requires more in depth knowledge on programming logics than the frontend side of it. Back end is more db related and your intuition level and logical reasoning must be spot on. You must be a good analyst and deep thinker to survive that end. Also to that end, you understand some core basic machine language, then how storage is being handled. So depending which side you want to go, it determines how deep you can go. Even the front end isn't a walk in the park but you will survive at your age.
That brings us to the question about your history is quantitative analysis. How good is your reading and reasoning skills? Cos programmers are thinkers and they must be able to interprete their thoughts in logical steps to achieve desired results. The phone we use, just imagine how deep people think to program a phone just to give us joy. So its serious business with 247 dedication.
That leads to the final question, what's your social life like cos I will tell you one truth, if you are a faaji person, a baller who is very active in social life, I suggest you forget programming cos most programmers are solitary folks whose nature doesn't go with a faaji person. As a thinker, you probably spend more time quietly and indoors. You probably be walking with pen and notepad everywhere. Just look at zuckerberg, his fashion sense is zero, not because he doesn't have the money, he just doesn't have the time to look good.
With all that being discussed, if you being honest with yourself, you will know what yo do. OP I think you should listen to this guy, he knows what he's saying. I have done a bit a programming so I know that for you to go far in it you need to have the passion and not just be in it for the money or because you thing there are better job opportunities there. In addition at your age I suspect you would have more distraction by way of a wife and kids whose needs have to be met from time to time. For you to have a good grounding ip programming you should be able to devote hours upon hours with little interruptions to learning, practising and solving problems! romeo411: I honestly want to switch to programming as in carrier change, considering that I am 40, can I still make it giving every input I put in. |
