Rwanda has launched Africa's first Green City worth $4.5 billion. The city is sited on a land area of about 620 hectares in Kinyinya, Gasabo District in Kigali. The Green City aims to promote environmentally-friendly facilities that will consist of electric cars, green buildings, electric bicycles, renewable energy amongst other things. With the Green City Project, Rwanda is looking to further consolidate its position as the African capital for green revolution which is fast becoming a world practice with more cities in the world going green because of its environmental, socio-economic and health benefits. One of the major benefits of a Green City is the reduction of air pollution in form of carbon and gas emissions, thereby providing clean air the quality of life amongst the inhabitants as research shows that people are healthier when their environment is greener. This is what happens when you have a visionary leader!! Just this two things will alleviate poverty in Nigeria 1. Stable electricity 2. Building modern Cities across Nigeria Imagine turning the whole of Nigeria to a construction site, Poverty will automatically reduce drastically!! As we speak now, Construction is going on in almost every nooks and crannies of China and new ones are springing up everyday!! I pray we get it right one day!! Modified: Eko Atlantic City in Lagos is a Green city too!! 1 Like |

blessingee:Wrong. Eko atlantic actually do fit into it. Perhaps, we can argue that the Rwanda city is the perfect one. Green city doesn't necessarily mean there won't be emission at all but means that there would be so very little of it, it would be invisible. What makes the Rwanda case perfect is "electric car thing" otherwise Eko has everything they boast it would possess. But remember the occupants are the well-to-do people of the society who can afford the right cars that hardly emit this toxic gas. Eko Atlantic has: Green Environment....250,000 trees already planted in the city. And that's excluding the ones the developer of each building must plant around their buildings. All the houses are to be green houses.....At least those completed and ones under construction so far are. Proper Drainage and water system... the waterways created within the city would not just beautify but further enable lil to no pollution in the environment. Water treatment system Stable 24/7 power supply Standard safety-distance system.... there is to be a reliable space between houses to allow free flow of breeze and allow for restriction of communal hazard to only the building it might be affecting in the future.. Good water supply. And some more. |

PHAYOL81: May be you should check criteria that makes a place fit to be called a green city. Going by your first paragraph, Eko Atlantic doesn't qualify |

blessingee: Eko Atlantic not only qualify, it's a perfect example of a green city and they are already getting EDGE green status certification. The term green city gets thrown around carelessly and needlessly, there are many green cities all over the world, I mean known cities with green city classifications. Green city is not about digging up a measly and meager 13 hectares land, build a few houses and slam green city label on it, that's not how it's done. Before claiming the term green city, you must submit your buildings for green certifications, green spaces like trees, energy and water resources consumption, transportation, trails and park spaces. This Rwanda thing is another PR stunt, it's nothing but a drawing board claim about an ordinary 13 hectare parcel of land buildings deceptively glorified and sold as a green city. I don't even think there's a single building in the whole of Rwanda with EDGE green status certification International Finance Corporation (IFC) Green city status is a process, not a cheap drawing board project label. |

The sad thing about Nigerians especially the ones from the SE is rummaging through the internet to uphold rubbish from other countries just to put their own country down when in fact their own country is already leading the way and already did what they are jumping all over the place for in other countries. |

Alaro City sits on a 2000 acre piece of land and will include a mixed-income, city-scale development with industrial and logistics locations, complemented by offices, homes, schools, healthcare facilities, hotels, entertainment and 370 acres of parks and open spaces. Totally green and under construction here in Nigeria, not a 13 acre drawing board project in Rwanda. |
