CHAPTER TWENTY FOUR


Everyone that came for the funeral wore black and wore sad faces. Doctors and nurses from Save A Life Hospital looked bereaved, they had lost the best surgeon in the hospital. Bari stood at the far end of the cemetery, weak from crying too much. She wiped her tears with the back of her palm, still couldnt believe that Daniel was dead, she had been expecting him to show up at her shop or even her house. The black shawl she covered her face with, fell down on the floor, she bent to pick it but Chioma beat her to it.


"Thank you" she muttered, more like a whisper to Chioma, after she took the shawl from her.


"It's nothing, best friend" Chioma replied, looking at her with pity. She (Bari) had become so thin that an AIDS patient would be hopeful just by merely looking at her.


"I waited for you, Daniel. For two weeks i have been living in denial, i didn't want to believe you are gone, are you not coming back again?" she whimpered.


"It's okay, Bari, he is dead, just accept the fact and get a grip on yourself. Have you even looked at yourself in the mirror lately? you look so thin" Chioma complained and rubbed Bari's back soothingly.


"The one last chance i had at finding happiness, again, is gone and you expect me to be feeding well?" she scoffed.


"Am sorry" Chioma muttered.

An elderly woman walked towards them. she was equally clad in a black flowing gown, her head covered with a shawl. Bari looked on as she approached them, she needed no soothsayer to tell her that he was Daniel's mother.


"I heard you were his girlfriend" she said to Bari, who only nodded.


"Did he tell you anything about having a problem with someone? she sniffed.


"No Ma. i actually spoke with him the day he had that accident, he said he wouldn't be leaving the house, i was shocked when someone from the hospital called to tell me that Daniel was in the hospital" Bari explained.


"For 32 years, i nurtured him, i watched him grow, i watched him become the doctor he had always wished to be, and today, that 32 years had become a waste, it's gone. His only crime was to save lives" she sniffed, wiped her tears and continued. "I begged him severally to come home, i pleaded with him, i talked to him, but no, he said people needed his attention here. while devoting to save people's lives, he forgot to save his life as well. But i will not cry, no, i will not cry" she broke into a heart wrenching sob. Bari who couldn't take the woman's outburst any longer, wailed loudly too.


"God, you took my son away, no problem" the woman began again, after she had wiped her tears. "I will not fight you, no na, i can't. I will still continue to serve you, if it pleases you, then it pleases me. You are still my God, i will never denounce you" the tears started pouring again, she wiped the tears, turned back and stared at a group of young men at a corner of the cemetery. She tapped Bari and pointed at them.


"They were his secondary School classmates, they were age mates, but here they are, attending his funeral. 32 years, wasted in a day. No problem, i won't cry" she wailed loudly. People around couldn't hold back their tears, everyone cried. Chioma looked away, when she couldn't take the woman's pain anymore, she effortlessly wiped the tears that kept streaming down her face.


"Mom, i have been looking for you" a young man said with a sigh, walking towards the woman who had already thrown herself on the ground, wailing loudly.


Bari stared at the young man who had a striking resemblance with Daniel, aside his broad shoulders and his oval face, he could be mistaken for Daniel.


"David, you are here" The woman said, on seeing the young man. "Look at your brother's girlfriend, your brother left her as well, without a farewell speech" she wiped her tears. The young man helped her up and turned to Bari and Chioma


"Am David, Daniel's twin brother" he muttered.


"Twin brother? Daniel had a twin?" Bari asked, shocked.


"Yes, he does, am sure he was yet to tell you before he died" he shrugged.


"He never told me" Bari said, it came out as a whisper. She didn't have the energy to talk anymore.


"We need to go now, Mom. Uncle Kingsley is looking for you" he said to the woman who was weeping silently. "If you will excuse us now" he said to Bari.


"He was just 32 years old, yet to fulfill his purpose in life. A great surgeon of his time is gone. 32 years, okay, I won't cry, God has taken him, i won't cry" the woman muttered as her son took her away.


"Rowland is coming" Chioma whispered to Bari, who still had her gaze on Daniel's mother. On hearing what Chioma said, she shifted her gaze to Rowland and watched him approach her with flowers in his hand.


"Am sorry, Bari. I came as soon as i heard, how are you feeling?" he asked.


"Am not fine, am hurting, am heartbroken, i feel like my heart is about to split into two. Daniel is gone. The only man that accepted me just the way i am, the only man that wasn't ashamed to be with a single mother" she weeped.


"Am sorry. you are not meant to suffer this way, am sorry you are going through all these" Rowland said soothingly.


"It's not your fault, Rowland, you don't have to be sorry" she sniffed.


"Alright, let me go keep the flowers on his grave and also pay my last respect. I don't really know him but the testimonies on people's lips already convinced me that he was a good man. Take heart" he patted her shoulder and left.













Bari sat helplessly on the sofa in her living room. She stared at nothing and allowed the tears to flow freely. It was a week since Daniel was buried but she was yet to get used to the fact that he was dead. She had picked up her phone a few days back, dialing his number and waiting for him to answer the call.


"You are at it again" her mother said, coming out from the kitchen. The woman had decided to move in with her since after the funeral, she was scared she (Bari) would hurt herself.


"Am not doing anything, Mom. Am fine" Bari replied groggily, wiping off the tears on her face.


"But you were crying when i came in"


"Here, see, am not crying" she smiled at her.


"Lunch is ready, come and eat"


"Am not hungry, Mom. I will eat later" she sniffed.


"Bariludu" the woman called out, softly. "you have not had any tangible thing to eat since last week. Just look at you, see how thin you have become, I can even count your ribs. Do you want to kill yourself? am sure Daniel wouldn't want that"


"I will eat later, Mom, just let me be for now"


"No, did you hear me? I said no. You are going to get up from that sofa and you will walk straight to the dining right this minute, what is wrong with you?" the woman thundered.


"Okay, fine, i will eat" she stood up from the sofa and sluggishly walked to the dining.
