Gloriagee: The average middle class income earner in Nigeria earns between N75,000 - N100,000 monthly. In your opinion, how many percentage of the parents of private school students meet this monthlt income? |

When I was working in a private school I considered myself unemployed. However not all schools collect fees at once. Because of the bad economy more parents are allowed installment payments. |

This is a good time for Mosques and Churches to assist private school teachers in their places of worship. The hardship they are facing this period is real. Pls show love, show true love |

uromii: To show How wicked black man can be most of the proprietors/proprietress have dubiously refused to give their staff their complete payment for April, May. So, because some private schools proprietors refuse to pay their students, every black man and woman are now the most wicked on the face of the earth. Most of you shallow heads just use words without thinking. What level of self condemnation is this. Do you ever thought the private school proprietors may have to extend the school term or session by the number of months the students miss. Will the students be asked to pay for those months again? Assuming that happens, if the schools have used the funds available to clear salaries of teachers during Covid-19 months, where will they get money to pay for the additional months. Let every teachers come together and examine their contracts. That's what should be used as basis for negotiation and demand. |

Thank you OP for bringing this topic up. I have always felt that private school teachers have always been cheated with their monthly pay. Because, why will a teacher who teaches an average of 25 students in each class be earning less than #20,000 while each student pays an average of #40,000 thousand for school fees per term? I feel each teacher should earn at least what what two students in his/her class pay per term every month. Even before the compulsory holliday period, most proprietors were just cashing out big time with their students school fees. Most of the children of school owners are also sent abroad to school while an average school teacher can not do that. In some cases the teachers are also expected to pay school fees for their children in the school they teach in! There needs to be a change in all these 1 Like |

Very right I'm a private school teacher. And I think your analysis above is flawed. This certainly doesn't work for most private schools in Nigeria. At least, not for where I work. Since most private schools are patronized by families that live on somewhere below the middle class income range, I think I have a pretty good idea how they make their payments. Some parents pay early on. Some pay after the first fee drive. Some pay in parts when they get salaries. Some pay whenever those sponsoring the child's education send the money. Some wait until exam time to pay. And some will still not pay that term. And the school will still consider some pleas too. So 96% is a really unrealistic number. I'ld go with 50% at most. What you should insist on instead is the school management seeking other possible ways to ensure their staff get paid.[/quote] 1 Like |

VenusEAGLE:Lol So, because I don’t ask my students if they have paid their school fees, I’m no longer a teacher? Ok naw. Where I teach, there is division of labor. My duty is to teach, the school admin handles school fees and they do it discretely. That being said, I don’t ask my students whether they have paid school fees or not. My own is to make sure that they are properly taught. |

seanwilliam: It is very easy for you to sit here and be churning out garbage about private schools not paying you! If it that easy why don't you go and start your own school? Now that these teachers are going round doing private lessons and smiling to the bank have they asked how the school owners are surviving? My wife runs a school and not until this pandemic period have we realised and seen the true picture that we have been running a charity outfit. This is especially so if your school is located in a low income area, where paying school fees is a big issue to most parents . The post that 95% of fees have been paid is erroneous, because for us, just 30% of parents have paid before the lock down. Most of these schools you think are doing well are struggling like most industries in Nigeria. During the pandemic, we sat down and asked the question - if the school being run by my wife had been paying the rent for the school for the past 6 years , (it is our property) how much do we have as profit? Nothing! I have even been subsidising the running cost! When that musician sang the song 'School Na Scan' , I never knew he was referring to school owners too. Our immediate plan now is to close the two flats being used for school space and rent them out! 3 Likes |
