Defence and Military Veterans Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula for the first time acknowledged that the government was deeply concerned about the violence in Mozambique.

She pointed out that this violence could likely spread to other Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries.

"Defence Intelligence can confirm that there is an increase of Islamic insurgency activities currently in the province of Cabo Delgado, Mozambique and these have the potential to spread to other provinces and neighbouring SADC states," Mapisa-Nqakula said.



The minister went on to reveal that the plan of action will be discussed behind closed doors. She revealed that a parliamentary committee, the Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence (JSCI) will discuss the ISIS threat in a closed door meeting not open to the public.

If any member of the committee publicise the content of the discussion, they will face jail time. The government has made it a point that the planned action against this insurgency in Mozambique is highly classified.



The violent Islamic insurgency broke out in 2017 and it has claimed lives of more than 1000 people and displaced more than 210000 people in Cabo Delgado, the northernmost Province of Mozambique.



A militant group known as Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaah, has been the one orchestrating these attacks. It is an affiliate of the ISIS.

Democratic Alliance(DA) Member of Parliament (MP) Dr Mimmy Martha Gondwe said in a statement on Sunday that the South African public needs the assurance that its government is taking all the necessary steps to mitigate the impact of the mounting insurgency in Mozambique.



Dr Gondwe also pointed out that the general public deserve to know whether the government is ensuring a well co-ordinated approach is taken by all potentially involved role players including the intelligence agencies and the defence forces.

Fighting terrorism is having the RIGHT equipment and having the RIGHT doctrine.........Our entire defense force doctrine and equipment is built around asymmetric warfare.

Egypt's Military is built for the sole purpose of conventional war...........there doctrine is not aimed towards asymmetric warfare, hence why they have struggled with battling terrorism in their own country.

Countries like the US, Netherlands,UK ect ect still come to South Africa to train for COIN warfare.

There is a reason why South African mercenaries are so sought after wrt fighting terrorists ........just ask your own generals!!

I don't see terrorists holding territory within the US do you?

Also as i've said before in terms of COIN warfare SA is at the forefront in the world.........hence countries like the US, Canada, UK, france ect ect are using tactics developed by South Africa as well as buying millions of dollars of South African weapon systems to fight insurgencies.

And France can outrightly defeat insurgencies however they are not in Africa to do that, they are simply here to protect there interests.

Another great example is what happened to Unita and the RUF..............Executive outcomes did in a matter of months what multinational forces couldn't do within years!! Same is happening in Mozambique as we speak!!
