My 1st car was a Civic 90, I could recall I was always changing the shaft at 3-4 months interval. I have also had the opportunity of owning an Accord 2006 aka DC. I can testify to having this ball joint issue like twice. I'm very careful and meticulous about the maintenance of my car to the point that any unusual sound I hear is discomforting to my ears, and I always buzz my mechanic to come check it out. My mechanics take on the ball joint issue: 1. He is of the opinion that whenever you change the OEM part which comes with the car and source for new part, 9/10 favours you would lay your hands on a substandard / Chinese part. 2. Some mechanics miss small details, and hence don't do a thorough job fixing the issue. 3. Lack of maintainance from drivers and failure to notice warning signs. As for me , I am done with Honda for life and never patronising it again. The legs are just too fragile for my liking and not reliable enough. But if you can tackle these leg issues permanently, you'd definitely enjoy a Honda. 4 Likes |

For every 10 cars with that problem on the you are guaranteed that 7 of them are Honda. All those shouting maintenance are only crying more than the bereaved. Honda had a design flaw which they have corrected. 2 Likes |

majamajic: Infringement!!! Can you proof the hogwash statement of yours? Just buy OEM ball joint (new or toks) and forget about it. Buy the ball joint that cost 1.5-5k, expect a pull out from the very day you put that ball joint. The 2008 up accord has exactly the same set up with the 2006 down accord. No change from Honda. The ball joint is just bigger in size to accommodate for the heavier car. The 2003 to 2007 ball joint is also bigger than the 2002 down. This is also due to more weight on newer models. 4 Likes |

Had my share of experience in 2014 with 2005 Honda accord. Almost ran into an eatery due to leg pull. Sold that car few months later and will never buy a Honda ever. For those screaming maintenance and shit including the OP, you can go tell your sermon to the birds. I can't even recommend a Honda to my enemy. As per those talking about evil spirit even you must buy one please avoid 2008 accord, because it has similar issues too. I'm saying this not because I read it somewhere but have a colleague suffering same thing with his 2008 Honda accord. 3 Likes |

Ekinematics: I wish you could answer my questions honestly. Have you ever changed your Honda ball joint? Did you buy it yourself or mechanic did on your behalf? Did your mechanic install a cotter pin or not? Let me tell you what can pull out in a Honda leg 1. Lower arm ball joint (95% of pull outs) 2. Upper arm ball joint (hardly pulls out) 3. Tie rod end inner (5% of the pull out) 4. Tie rod end outter (hardly ever) Before i give you my point, there are 3 dampers (bushing) on the lower arm, 2 on the upper arm, 1 on the stabilizer linkage. Now, for a driver who has no idea of the mechanism of a car and cannot even know if he has a pending leg problem (like my mother), this person will drive till the leg pulls. For the driver who is broke and cannot immediately afford to fix a problem with 1 of these, when a second issue joins, he will never know at what point the leg is in critical condition and needs urgent attention. A leg problem needs a critical and sensitive person to point but when the problem is more than 1, it becomes very difficult to trace without stripping the entire leg looking for fault. This person will also drive till it pulls. To those who have money and will throw it a slight notice without giving an eye to quality of parts Installed, you will still get the pull. So how does one stop it from happening, answer the questions I asked and you will hear the solution. 90% of the Honda on our roads came from the US, they dont have this problem. Honda has never recalled a vehicle for this problem (within my knowledge) and have recalled vehicles for issues far smaller than this serious mechanical failure. It doesn't happen in Canada, Japan, Dubai or other countries these cars are used except in Nigeria. The problem is local, has nothing to do with Honda as a brand and Honda company isnt aware of it. If you dont reply with answers to questions asked, i will state here that you should continue to bad mouth Honda for my benefit. How? The more people find Honda as unreliable, the less its value and the more i buy Honda for less money but higher value. Do you understand the economics? Isnt this the main reason why a used Corolla is more expensive than a used Camry even though the true value of camry is higher. 17 Likes |

Re: How To Avoid The Common Honda Ball Joint Problem by Kelvin30286063(m): 1:32am On May 31, 2019 |
Personally I think it's down to maintenance. I drive an accord 2006 Europe spec, it has only pulled once in 2 years now. Even that once, it has given me the warning sign for more than 2 weeks but I was broke so I didn't listen. A few fixes also help, like tagging the ball joint and making sure the rubber filter is not torn. Now I don't even wait for my ball joint and shaft to worn out, I just change them when I have money and I want to do my regular servicing. Besides this issue, everyone will agree with me that Honda is a wonderful car to have. Fuel economical, parts not so expensive and all. 2 Likes

Re: How To Avoid The Common Honda Ball Joint Problem by adanny01(m): 2:26pm On Jul 19, 2020 |
dicksonadams: Am saying the set up is the same. Its called the "double wishbone suspension" and several if not all Accords use it. Even Toyota use it on heavier cars like Hilux, Prado etc Technically, a ball joint can fail in any car. In the Accord, IMO the placing of the ball joint above the lower control arm causes more stress to the ball joint, the bolt shaft and the nut. So a thread failure is 10 times more likely to happen leading to k-leg. To prevent it, Honda decided to put a cotter pin to prevent the nut from falling out but for whatever stupid reason, Naija mechanics will remove the pin and throw away leaving Nigerians at the mercy of k-leg. On an Accord, the weight of the car through the shocks rest on the nut with a safety pin, on a Camry the weight of the car through the shocks rests on the hub. That's why Camry's have more bearing failure but less ball joint failure. The only thing is that ball joint failure is more catastrophic. Lastly, do you know that Chinese ball joint doesn't even come with the hole for cotter pin? If you noticed, mechanics will buy new chinko ball joint but will not use the new nut. If the nut is substandard, the ball joint is surely substandard. The Nigerian factor is the reason for failures. 7 Likes |

Re: How To Avoid The Common Honda Ball Joint Problem by Babadee1900(m): 8:48pm On Nov 05, 2020 |
staneless:OEM simply means original equipment manufacturers. You can buy from Amazon EBay RockAutos etc or locally from trusted sellers like Radautoworks and the likes. Mind you the parts can be pricey but you will get the value for money spent. |

Babadee1900: Thank you very much. I have been looking for where to buy original ball joints for my Honda accord (discussion continue). I think I will go with this Radautoworks here in Lagos Nigeria. |
