This uncertainty is killing me! My supervisor said he was going to try to find a way to see if I can be paid my stipend, but the best scenario would be that I resume physically, obviously. He even wrote me a letter to give the embassy! Unfortunately, I got the same reply as Justochi. I don't know if I should keep holding on and hoping, or just basically tell him there's next to no hope of me coming. When I saw the news on the fp I almost prepared an email to tell him, but the screenshot of that tweet posted in this thread shows it's "fake news". I'm just so confused. And extremely tired. 3 Likes |

From what is going on at the moment, it's advisable to forego the idea of traveling in August, at least till September because according to the Aviation Minister, they're working on getting an earlier date before October. 1 Like |

kilankoazeez: Naija matter dey tire person.... nothing is ever organized . With the lack of true update it so hard to plan. Some people might forgo plan only for them to suddenly open or you can make so much optimistic plans and nothing will happen Anybody who has an opportunity to leave Nigeria should grab it. The disorganization is just too much 10 Likes 1 Share |

The Government won't be concerned about the masses since their family members can travel for pleasure and whatever through the emergency flights or fly with a private jet. Even though they are losing revenue through the continuous closure of the airspace, they still have other several other means of looting money hence the lack of concern. What other nationals do with no form of stress, we have to go through the eye of the needle to achieve. People have scholarships that would turn around their lives for good but there is no hope of travelling because of how disorganized our system is and yet the President will say Nigerian youths are lazy. greenskittles: Since the Trump administration has allowed current international students to continue studying in the US even if their courses are fully online, it is very likely that they might not be in a hurry to resume visa processing early enough for new students this Fall. Bear in mind that the US is still fighting hard to bring down the rising number of covid cases across the country. Even schools like mine that planned to implement the hybrid format have also gone back online; only 1 of my 3 courses this Fall is hybrid. That's just because it's an engineering course with lab activity. So if you feel you have the resources and ability to study remotely from Naija, then go ahead. Even if they can't pay you for the months you work in Fall since you do not have a US bank account, once you get here in Spring that would be resolved. So instead of stressing yourself, have this discussion with your Advisor. Cheers. 4 Likes |

I don't just know why Nigerians dont really set their priority right. America herself is still trying hard to contain the virus damage and here in Nigeria youth are only concern about achieving their selfish interest. If the airspace is open, and and people clamoring of travelling leave the country what about the hundreds of thier family member left behind in the country. Everyone should know that the virus is still very much around even if you are not too aware of that because of the peculiarity of Africa nations of lack of statistics taking. DONALD TRUMP just understood the effect of the virus yesterday and he has now made a u-turn of him down playing the virus. Please let all be patriotic and be considerate for once. Consider that funding, scholarships only existed when there is life. America no dey run away!!! 3 Likes 1 Share |

I totally get how you feel, being in the same shoes. But it's not the end of the world and it's not the end of life. Still pray and hope for the best. Cheer up. Everything will be fine. P.s. If you sent the embassy the letter as an email attachment, they might not have read it. I don't think they open email attachments because of viral/malware attacks. greenskittles: 2 Likes |

pompeiimagnus:Thanks. I definitely would be able to study from Nigeria if I had the resources, but unfortunately I don't, and that's why I need to be completely sure that I could be paid the stipend. I don't think I would be able to take a part time job and still perform to the best of my ability. The courses I'm going to be taking are pretty intense, and that's part of the reason why I'm being funded on a fellowship (no work, basically) instead of an assistantship. The international center said they're still reviewing the legality of paying students and will give an update when they're sure of a solid interpretation of the laws. I also just got news that the Stanford Credit Union is also going to make it possible for students to open bank accounts with them remotely, so right now it really is a matter of the laws. Keeping my fingers crossed. All this would be solved if the Nigerian Government actually cared about it's citizens. 4 Likes |

AdoChel:Thank you, really, I appreciate it. I'm also preparing my mind for an extreme/worst case scenario where I lose everything (God Forbid though). I don't see how I can possibly pay $36k/year for two years in tuition alone, not to talk of other expenses. In that case I'll just have to accept my fate and look for something else. 1 Like |

klawaaa:Dude you're not the one with a hanging scholarship so i don't expect you to understand. And because you're not feeling what someone is feeling doesn't mean you should dismiss the cries. The "Nigerian selfish interest" stuff is uncalled for. Go on Twitter, Chinese and Indian prospective F-1 students are clamouring same way we're clamouring here in Nigeria. Just because you're not in someone's shoes doesn't mean you should point fingers. 10 Likes |

Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 15 by greenskittles: 3:32pm On Jul 22, 2020 |
Friedpotato:Probably to pay taxes. All money you're paid that isn't going towards tuition payment is taxable. They don't joke with taxes o. |

klawaaa: This was my thought process in this pandemic. ... was quite surprise to see maybe not on this thread but other student thread once you voice that really we are in a pandemic then you are the enemy The only thing that matters is how someone wants to travel, o my scholarship is what you see .... really is that priority. You travel tomorrow and get covid as your journey through and die. What exactly was the point then. Safety first . The priority shouldn't really be visa or education . I know everyone has great dreams and have made plans but for a minute think. ......... you are so right , the country people want to run USA, UK etc are struggling to manage the virus . Those death numbers from the virus are not made up. They are real figures . But hey people only want to hear what they want to hear not necessarily what the reality so me I don't even put mouth . To each itsown. life is a teacher itself 4 Likes |

Friedpotato: Maybe the guy sounded harsh, but I understood his point. A lesson I've learned since I came to study in the US is that any job, scholarship, or funding I get is a privilege; even if I worked really hard for it. So we cannot coerce them to start visa processing because we want to have a better life in their country - unless you're a US citizen sha... 1 Like |

greenskittles: When I got my on campus job, I didn't receive my first cheque when it was due. My boss said I was paid so I went to payroll to complain. Payroll seized my cheque because I didn't follow through on the paper work and submit my SSN for tax purposes. So i think the payroll department will determine your fate. Be rest assured your department will pay you your stipends. Worst case scenario, payroll will seize all your cheques until you get on campus if they don't want to use your ITIN for tax purposes. I think you should be just fine with ITIN. The Full Bright scholars that came to my school last year were not given SSN despite them being on campus. They were given ITIN and they were fine. W9 form accepts ITIN for tax purposes, so I think you should be fine as long as Stanford Credit Union agrees to open a remote US account for you guys. Always let them know that you already have an ITIN and that you can fill your w9 form from Nigeria and courier it to them. It might come down to that w9 form 1 Like |

LagosismyHome: Even if you get there today, get infected and die today, it is still better than getting infected in Nigeria. People are bound to die here sef with ot without corona. No social distance, no palliative, no basic amenities, etc. It is better to die for something (education) than to die for nothing in Nigeria. We all understand that there is nothing we can do but we wish things are different. I'm glad America figure is real but the hardest part is that you dont even know whether Nigeria figure is real or not. Every situation is being corrupted regardless of whether life is involve or not. Travel ban or not, these people still travel on daily basis to their desired location (perhaps they have multiple passports). Please, let those who care not about corona death lament if they want to. As a matter of fact, you dont even know what they are passing through. The way we live here right now (in Lagos) will make you to doubt the existence of corona regardless of what figure is released. Afterall, who die one day with or without corona. 5 Likes |
