WHAT A BLAST!( Atahiru Jega is dead!)
Tuesday, July 21st, 2020 was a day that I will not easily forget in my life.
Very early in the morning on that fateful day at our 22K Covid-19 induced temporal camp, he had gone to the bathroom to take his bath. He wasted more time than usual, to an extent that I felt angry with him. "Jega, why are you bathing like a woman? Come out, let me take my own bath, for I am late.", I told him. As he was coming out from the bathroom, he advised me not to be going to fetch water from the Indians' apartment, that some of them are rude and insulted him this morning. I laughed over it and went in to take my own bath. Before I could come out of the bathroom, Jega had left for work. That was the last sight. Today, he is no more. How did it happen?
Atahiru Jega( not former INEC Chairman, Professor Atahiru Jega) had gone to the Dangote Refinery warehouse with his boss, Basker Perumal(an Indian) to load some drums of calcium carbide(CaC2) from a 40-foot container that was at the warehouse laydown. They use the calcium carbide at the Dangote Gas Plant (within the refinery) to produce acetylene, which is used in welding pipes in the refinery.
Devil is too wicked.
Jega had gone with a structural welder, Mr Smart Peter to the container to cut the container's anti-theft-barrier-lock, using gas cutter. As Smart was cutting the lock, the container generated heat and exploded. The explosion, which occurred at about 2:10pm local time, shook the basement of the refinery. "Gbuuuum!", the container exploded. There were balls of fire and dark thick smoke in the air. The explosion threw Smart up to a high altitude to an extent that his body parts were dismembered. Jega's head was smashed. The back of the pickup van was reduced to scrap. The doors of the container flew 20 meters away. The sides of the container was blown into particles, to an extent that it damaged some other containers, adjacent to it. I had never heard or seen such an explosion before in my life. I thought it was a tsunami. I swear, mkponani dey learn work where this one dey. The Dangote Plant Manager, Mr Basker Perumal wept like a baby. "I came with my staff here and I am about to leave without him", he cried out. People around there were consoling him, but he kept on weeping. It was indeed a very sad day for all of us that knew the victims.
POSTMORTEM STORIES:
The Nigerian Supervisor that was supervising the cutting had begged Jega to take him to buy food at Julius Berger yard, but Jega refused, telling him that his boss was around and might come there anytime and wouldn't want him to start looking for him. Less than ten minutes that the supervisor had gone with another vehicle, came the bang.
The Structural welder, Mr Smart Peter had been sacked about five days ago and came back to the refinery to collect his salary, based on the days he had worked. His Indian M.D told him to come at the end of the month to collect it, but he refused. The stories that he told the Indian man touched him and he asked him to resume again. He started work that same day of his death. When that work was given to him to do, he refused doing it at that particular hour, but he reluctantly went, after the supervisor had advised him to do it, that nothing would happen. In order not to attract the wrath of the M.D again, he reluctantly went and met his Waterloo. What a world. Atimes, any disappointment turns to be a blessing in a disguise. God had wanted to save Mr Smart, through the sack, but he came back again and got reemployed. Jega would have still been alive if he had taken the supervisor to go and buy food.
It is a very big lesson for all of us. The fear of calcium carbide or acetylene is very key to our safety. I wish Mr Atahiru Jega(Katsina State) and Mr Smart Peter(Plateau State) eternal rest in the bosom of our Almighty God. God knows why. May God give their respective families the fortitude to bear the irreparable losses. Amen! Adieu!
