So they send an f-15 to go check out the unidentified aircraft it hadn't necessarily be a “wepons check”. I believe the main issue was to determine if it was a risk to their equipment near the area maybe an aircraft with bombing capability unless of course they now bomb with civilian aircrafts. I don't see any reason why the us air Force would burn the costly jet fuel to check out a no risk target.

Don't expect them to tell you what they are up to, especially because they need to do such at specific distance from the suspected aircraft. Don't be surprised there may be technologies to detect arms or if it's a passenger plane. I believe there are techs out there to do such. Only those in that area of expertise can dispute such. Even with no knowledge in such field but with my expert science background I can easily imagine sensors for such material or humans inside a plane. Every natural or man-made material will always emit some form of EMR waves. Even a thermal IR scan of the entire length of the plane excluding engine sections may reveal body heatmap from passengers (and i just confirmed online that thermal IR scan is actually used for detecting passengers and other materials in aircraft but for different context, so it is theoretically possible for military purposes). And that may be why the US military aircraft need to come close to the Iranian plane.
