ArticleBeast:Government promised Nigerians? Who is talking about the government's fake promises? I'm referring to specific promises made to these volunteers. But come to think of it, why are you trying to brush off the fact that this government made fake and deceitful promises which they've failed to fulfill any like it's normal? Your type are the problem we have in this country. You can't demand for accountability. 7 Likes |

Stop using that word "free 30k". Don't be ignorant. Some beneficiaries worked very well for whatever they got yet still they were owed...batch B were promised devices which was a part of the agreement. They should pay them and give them their devices and let them go. The country is a failed system and it has failed you too from the way you reason and that's why you can't even hold them accountable accordingly. In case you don't know and I'm 100% sure you don't know..that some units will suffer when some beneficiaries exit the program. Something is fundamentally wrong with your country and you know it. MilkANDpepper: If you wanna make a sensible argument, I would gladly oblige, if you wanna throw tantrums or insults, I'm also gonna be there for you. Let's be rational (use your brain) for once. Did the federal government give a 2yr duration for the programme or not?? What is fundamentally wrong here if not for Nigerians that despise due process? When Sure-P by Jonathan came out, did you know anybody personally or from your village as a whole that participated? Why didn't you rant and make noise then? Is it because Buhari is the most transparent president ever that you guys wanna make noise? Reply me with facts and not tantrums. 2 Likes 2 Shares |

If you are part of those castigating the Npower volunteers for demanding for either permanency or a grant to start a business after 2-4 years in service to the nation, then you need to reconsider your humanity. Given, there is an agreement to serve for 2 years but imagine 500,000 youths disengaged without proper plan. That is sucidal! Some of them, having served for close to 4 years in the programme, can no longer apply for job due to age barrier. At least let government give them grants or reasonable amount of loan (not N100,000 being proposed under GEEP initiative) to start their lives and contribute to the economy. I understand that it is very difficult for government to employ 500,000 people at once, but government can afford N600,000 grant/loan for the beneficiaries to start something and feed their families. Before you judge, put yourself in their shoes. 12 Likes 1 Share |

Yankee101: That is what we said then and keep on saying now. It is our subculture of indolence that gave rise to the 'allocation mentality' operating in our national financial structure that has found its way into the social safety nets assembled by this goverment. While they thought it will create jobs but alas as we have operated for almost sixty years it has created only dependency, and aggravated a viscious cycle of poverty because as we speak 'mouths have been widened'. I bet you. Ask anyone of them what they have done with all the resources and they will give you a typical 'Nigerianesque' reply. 'I used it to SOLVE my problems', none of which is the lack of productivity. That is why I have always said and in agreement with Lamido Sanusi that a structure that always puts money ahead of productivity, a contracting economy or contractors paradise, a rent seeking economy can never lead to development. The real grassroots of fundamental development is TO REWARD PRODUCTIVITY NOT SEEK TO BUY PRODUCTIVITY. If States are to develop then so called allocations should only be made to productivity. If N-Power is to work then the goverment should only be paying FOR WHAT HAS BEEN DONE. Today you have N-power, tomorrow the Keyamo jobs, same error. Why can't anyone in goverment connect the dots and seek a structure where goverment's deficit in infrastructure, power, education, health be met with the skills these beneficiaries venture into and use the funds to be allocated to them as payment for deliverables in these fields. Practically speaking. Why can't they be saddled with the task for instance of developing test kits, sanitary consumables, contact tracing, medical supplies in this Covid 19 battle. Why can't they be led towards channels where goverment presently expends collosal amounts of money it doesn't have to provide materials and services it needs. Why should goverment spend its scarce resources on my project to learn to make biscuits when it is taking loans to 'contract' another Nigerian to buy face masks from China. We need our social naira to go to our pressing social NEEDS then we are sure it is money well spent. Only that will guarantee productivity and prevent a culture of irresponsible dependency. You are signing SUKUK for roads while you have teams of protesters outside your gates....what kind of leaders do we have in Nigeria for goodness sake. No vision at all. 6 Likes 1 Share |

heykims: Why not just aim for the ultimate and set up factories / businesses that produce the very things these money are meant to buy. That's the crux and core of economy or money chase - production. What the govt is doing is a lazy approach that's meant to quickly distribute money to people. What we need is a deep rooted approach that invests that money in productive ventures like industries. These industries will generated more sustainable employments and won't weight down govt's finances once they navigate the initial stage. 2 Likes |

I've modified my initial reply to you. I'll still tell you the fact that you are ignorant by using that word "free 30k". It is an insult especially to those beneficiaries in the health sector who worked both on some weekends due to the zeal they had and the lapses they saw in the health sector. Listen carefully... Federal government should pay them their outstanding stipends and give the batch B their devices as promised... Talking about keeping and understanding contract terms. Then exit them in peace. Your country is a failed system. Do you understand me? I'm not interested in your political bigotry of Jonathan this and Buhari that. I'm above such idiocy you are trying to drag me into. Don't you people know how to read agreements? What I don't understand is why you think 1000 naira per day for two years can really empower anyone in Nigeria. ProfAmaben: I will tell you what is fundamentally wrong here. The same people told the Npower beneficiaries that their voters' cards is their assured way to permanency when they knew that it was impossible! Why taking 500,000 unemployed graduates off the streets for two years only to return them to the same place? What have they solved in that regard? Taking another 400,000 unemployed graduates off the streets and return them to the streets after one year! That's madness! And yet, individuals could be allowed to steal as much as 100 billion naira! 7 Likes 1 Share |

If goverment had simply stated that at the end of the scheme they will conduct something like a trade fair where goods and services developed along set criteria of national needs will be displayed and vetted by key private sector players these folks will be busy today. But when you just throw out money without direction, plans, targets, expectations you get nothing. N-power should be an important component of a greater national development strategy to either create a small businesses regime which will service bigger, leading, key industry and soak up the huge number of unemployed youth or a deliberate strategy to recreate the anhiliated middle class. But what it is now, no one knows for it seems to have only created a horde of sophisticated beggars and dependants. Poor strategy, poor vision. 1 Like 1 Share |
