This is not a case of stealing or theft but of robbery so the OP should adjust the header accordingly.

Theft or 'a steal' will involve clandestine action of concealment or subterfuge. In a store/shop that will usually take the form of a shoplift in broad daylight or a heist at odd hours.

The key to robbery on the other hand is coercion or the threat of force/violence which requires active, open, brazen action as seen in the vid.

The penalties according to the law are poles apart.

But why don't people just install panic alarms with push buttons under the counter. At the very least it will give the shop owner a split second to take cover or take action and may further cause lily-livered intruders to flee.
