The dumbass organization has been the source of this silly madness that Ikwerre are not Igbo. The so-called Ikwerre is nothing but 3 LGAs in Rivers State. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Ikwerres are proud descendants of Binis. Ranting here because you don't like it won't change the situation on ground. Go to Obio akpor and say Ikwerre are Igbo and see if they will not disfigure you with acid |

Igboid: This has nothing to do with love or hate or who was raised on falsehood to hate who. Thats beside the point. The argument here is that that being Igbo cannot be reduced to who wants to be Igbo and who doesn't. If that narrative is allowed to stand then what it means is that the Ezza people of Ebonyi can get up tomorrow and declare that they are no longer Igbos because they choose not to be. The Ngwa man of Abia can get up tomorrow and say he is no longer Igbo because he chooses not to be. The Nsukka people of Enugu, the Oru man of Imo, the Abiriba man of Abia can all decide any time they like that they are no longer Igbos. It doesnt stop there, since we have now reduced Igbo to who chooses to be and does not choose to be, what it means is that the Nupe man of Niger state can get up tomorrow and proclaim to be Igbo because he now chooses to be one. Igbo is all about who chooses to be one, right? We cannot reduce being Igbo to an auction where anybody chooses what they want and what they dont want. If that is the case, then meaning of being Igbo is lost. The Ikwerre can claim to be "distinct" but if their "come" is "Bia", they are fooling nobody. It doesnt matter who the Ikwerre love or hate, it doesnt matter how Igbophobic they are. The only thing that matters is that Igbos are the group of people, contiguous to Southern Nigeria, who speak a variant of the Niger-Congo branch of language known as Igbo, as their ancestral language, and have a surname or family name derived from that language This definition is the only thing that makes me Igbo, it is the only thing that makes the Nsukka man, the Oru man, the Abakiliki man, the Ngwa man, the wawa man and of course, the Ikwerre man, to be Igbo. Ethnic stock is not by choice, I can deny my father from now to eternity but it wont change the fact that he is my father. We should acknowledge the Ikwerres such as former Governor Chibuike Amaechi, Secretary General of Ohanaeze, Uche Okwukwu and actress, Tonto Dike, who have all come out publicly to declare they are Igbos. We should pity the the Ikwerre still denying being Igbo because they are suffering from identity crisis. How they will ever be able to convince anyone in the world when their "come" is "Bia" is beyond me. By the way, IPOB's agitation is about the former Eastern Region, not about who loves Igbos. 2 Likes 1 Share |

IspitonCowards: Did anybody force an Ikwerre man like former Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi to come out publicly and say he is an Igbo man? Did anyone force an Ikwerre man like Uche Okwukwu to become Secretary General of Ohanaeze? Did I force an Ikwerre girl like Tonto Dike to say she is Igbo? So how are we all to know which Ikwerre is Igbo and which one is not? 2 Likes 1 Share |

kingzizzy: If Nollywood was controlled by Ikwerre, you won’t hear them claiming to be Igbo (that is if your statement is even true). They’re probably just protecting their careers. I’m sure you’ve never met an Ikwerre man before. You just stay somewhere in Northern Igboland (or even outside Igboland) making assumptions and spewing fallacies. They’re not Igbo. That gibberish they speak is not Igbo. They’re are only our neighbours. Why can’t you just take correction and stop embarrassing yourself and everyone else. |

For those mentioning Ikwerre names who 'agreed' that they are Igbos, can you tell us the audience they were making that statement to? Can you show us where these few names were speaking to their fellow Ikwerre and stated that they are Igbos? Hahaha. They know Igbos are emotionally vulnerable and are taking advantage of that. Ikwerre people are Binis by origin and they hold strongly to that. |

Ikwerre are not Igbo at all. They are proud descendants of Binis. They have told their history again and again but some deluded elements want to force them to become what they are not. Here is a little about Ikwerre origin as told by prominent and highly respected Ikwerre historians ** Chambers Dictionary (William Geddie, ed. 1962) says: “A nation is a body of people marked off by common descent, language, culture, or historical tradition: the people of a tribe.” However, S.O.L. Amadi-Nna (1993) avers that: “A tribe is a group of clans under recognized chiefs and usually claiming common ancestry. Ikwerre can therefore not be a clan but a tribe. The Ikwerres claim a common ancestor. Ikwerre is an independent small tribe.” In the words of K.O. Amadi (1993), “Traditions suggest that Ikwerre is a nickname given to Iwhnuruọhna people…..They have ever since regarded themselves as a distinct group and have happily come a long way in their struggle for self-identity as evidenced by the recognition of their language as one of the Nigerian languages.” Amadi-Nna (1993) added that: “The Ikwerres are a small but distinct tribe. The Ikwerres have distinct linguistic, social and cultural traits and formations that distinguish them from other close neighbouring tribes like the Ijaws and the Ibos. Majority of the Ikwerre settlements have their roots traceable from the old Benin Empire.” Iwhnurọhna people descended from the ancient Benin Kingdom. The name of the grand ancestor is Akalaka. Their relations with Rivers State are Ekpeye and Ogba people. The reigning Oba of Benin when Akalaka, the ancestor of Ihru ọ ha (later called Iwhnurọ hna) fled was Oba Ewuare (Ogwaro). |

Funny comments here. Imo state women are undeniably the prettiest in Igboland by a stretch which is attracting Ikwerre suitors. If Ogun state were sharing boundaries with Imo state like Ikwerre are, they would have also abandoned their own women for Owerri babes. It doesn't take anything away from who Ikwerres are. They are a distinct ethnic group with Bini origin. |

Tinubu is the most talked about topic on Nairaland. Less than 2% of Non-Igbo Nigerians know that there's anything called Ikwerre. If you doubt, just ask any random person on the Streets of Sokoto, Gboko, Ilorin, Biu, Ijebu-Ode, Auchi, or Ado-Ekiti if he/she believes Ikwerres are Igbos. The first response you will get is 'What is Ikwerres?' 24SEVEN: |

Excuse me sir, What exactly is the benefy of claiming a tribe? For instance what are the merits and demerits of Ikwerres accepting to be Igbo or be different ethnic group? I know so many ethnic groups in Nigeria (some are even less than 30,000 people) and they are existing without this kind of claim and/denials. Bkayyy: |

They will pretend not to understand what you have clearly stated. Maybe with time they will fight Hausa's over ownership of Sabon Gari in Kano they can be very unwise . 1 Like |

When I was growing up in Lagos, we used to call anybody after Bini 'Omo Igbo' until I got to university and did NYSC that I started seeing these people telling me they aren't Igbos. One of them was my friend and classmate named P**l Omachi. One day, i made a remark about him as an Igbo guy and I was surprised when he said he is from Benue and not an Igboman as we all assume. In the North, they regard any southerner that's not Yoruba as Igbo , including Dr Goodluck Jonathan. Firespitter: |

Afizeres, Anabuta, Angas and Berom are small related tribes in Plateau State and they don't claim each other. Isoko and Urbobos are indistinguishable in my own views but they always claim to be different tribes. Efik, Ibibio and Annag look the same to me but one of my former employees from Akwa-Ibom said they are related but there is no universal name that combine them so every tribe decide to be on it's own. What are the advantages or disadvantages of these? LadyExcellency: |
