Country affairs should be run on socialism-communism - but private sector should be run on cut-throat capitalism. Gov jobs is to tax that private sector and make sure the losers have something to fall back on. They should be the robin hood.

has it been ahead of other regions of the world for such a long time?
It's because in the middle ages Europe, like it is today, was made up of many little nations that competed furiously with one another. Switzerland, Norway, Denmark, Austria, Finland, Hungary, etc.
Even Germany was not united until the 19th century.
When the Dutch formed the East India company, the others including the British formed versions of it. Even in slave trade and colonization, the European competed against one another. Competition is one of the major things that helped Europe. It's why Britain remained outside the European common community until 1972_and have now exited EU.
If only Kenya and Tanzania were serious countries, then they would compete seriously with each other and become more prosperous. Same goes for Nigeria and Ghana. We should be competing to buy up firms in places like Kenya to have more influence and financial muscle than we currently have.
